Funnily enough I would not mind being forced to play a dwarf or an elf at all. My first playthough was City elf, but I would mind being forced to play a male character. I have male Sheps and I am now playing a male human mage and it is fun, but I want my first play throughs to be female, no matter what species. I am so often forced to play male characters in other games, it is one of Bioware's big plus points to offer well developed (characterwise!!!) female PCs.

I would rather have a dwarf or elf than a human as the main character, if I had to only pick one main character race. I hope DA 3 will go back to player character freedoms of picking race. I usually don't play fantasy based genre games just so I can roleplay as a human. Some of my DA:O characters are human, but it's a very small percentage.

I play role-playing games to play as someone who is NOT myself. If you want explore the world as yourself, THEN GO OUTSIDE.

While I can understand providing humans as an option, and that they were most popular, and I anticipate enjoying DA2 (I will not be playing remotely as myself) Bioware shouldn't limit itself to humans just because all their customers are humans.

I think the way BioWare did the avatars for the dwarves and elves is really what hurt the races. Seems like they were still using the lego mechanics from NWN, meaning we got stuck with guerrilla arms and boy-hips.

I thought the human female bodies were worse.

Why wouldn't you play as yourself. That is what Role-playing is there for usually if you dont mind playing something else then go play a first person shooter who has a default profile.

Role-playing is there for you to role-play as a character. You know there's this really great game where you can play as yourself, all you have to do is walk out your front door! I hear the graphics and characters are fantastic. Best part is, it's free!

btw I do play games of all genres, including some FPS's, though unfortunately FPS's tend to make me nauseous, so I can't play them too often. :(

My first, second, third and fifth play-throughs were all dorfs. :) I didn't have a hard time connecting to them any more than I had a hard time connecting to any other fantasy character/creature I've ever played. That is to say, not at all.

I love underdogs. So humans have always resonated with me in most fantasy. But the Elves were the underdogs this time around so I mostly played the Elven origins... weird... I wonder why I do that.

FPS's are there to play a predetermined character which i play alot so WHY  is it so bad of me to want to play a rpg that bioware makes that i want it to be base on me is your life so **** that you want to make a imaginery character to play sure i dont mind playing a rpg which is not based on me it is quite fun like the dwarves and elves but i would certainly would rather play a character to be of me

Why would you choose to play as a human when given a choice? I mean you're forced to be a human male warrior in 98% of rpgs. Also I can't believe anyone would only play one origin and only one gender and race of character...why?

Plus, just because a character isn't exactly like you doesn't mean you should be unable to relate to them. I'm a human woman of 5'10" with black hair and pale skin but that doesn't mean I can't be intrigued by a 4'0" tan bearded male dwarf character or that I can't relate with his situations or emotions. Every day people react to me as I am, it would be more interesting to experience new things if given a choice. I mean how many of you actually know how to use a sword and go tromping through the woods killing wolves and bears with it? Yet you can relate to a character who does those things and has those skills.

If we couldn't be qunari, then I would also settle for an elf, but it would have to be something different from city or dailish elves which we've already seen. Perhaps playing as a descendant from the elves of Arlathan, which somehow gives you special elf powers? I don't know.

Dalish and City elves are the descendants of the elves of Arlathan.  There isn't anything "more elf than elf" that the setting postulates beyond the Dalish possibly for trying to rediscover their history and past culture.  And you don't get special elf-powers beyond what the Dalish Keepers may practice if there is anything particularly different about it.  And that wouldn't necessarily be something a human couldn't learn, just something that is kept between Keepers and their Firsts.  But if you WANT to be that sort of elf, then Dalish is your bet.

Lol I came to this thread thinking from the title it would be some sort of inciteful inquiry into potential racist undertones in the default setups.

Eg. the default options for the story if you do NOT import from DAO:

The Human is all good, puts Alistair on throne and survives the Archdemon.

Poor elf on the other hand dies against the Archdemon.

Whilst the Dwarf on the other hand is a sh*t, exiles alistair, sends loghain to his death etc.

Both the Dwarf and Elf races get the short end of the stick.

(General answer)
Because you like playing humans.

(DA:O specific answer)
1. Humans are the tallest PC race
2. Humans are the most numerous race
3. The majority of major NPCs are human
4. The kingdom you're defending is your own
5. You're not looked down upon or considered an oddity (for HN, not human mage)

@5 and 6, The Witcher makes a bloody good job of setting you out from the community. Your considered a monster or a freak, and that adds so much on to any moral decision you might make to help someone out or choose not to help them. And then the fact the kingdom really has nothing to do with you, you're just after the salamanders also adds further shades of grey onto your actions. Just saying it can be a pro.

My first DAO playthrough was with a Dwarf commoner. Sexing up Morrigan was hilarious (albeit very difficult... talk about a blast of icy wind...)

One reason I prefer playing elves and dwarfs in DAO is that I don't like to feel like the game is "taking it easy" on me in terms of NPCs' reactions to my character. Example: "My lady, I'm afraid I must ask you to leave" vs "Get out of here, knife-ears!" / "Go back to the market, dwarf!"

I don't mind playing as the short dwarves because it reminds me that I'm playing a videogame, where a short person can go toe-to-toe against something twice their size or more and kick butt.  Ever since seeing the LotR movies and playing as a dwarf warrior in Everquest, I've had a certain fondness for short tanks in my rpgs.  Plus, human characters are dime-a-dozen and I like to be different.

I like and have played all the races. I usually play elves in games, but in DA:O, I prefer human. I just liked the way they looked the best. I have a prejudice on how elves should look in fantasy and DA:O's elves looked too human to me to be worth playing.

Sounds like the elves get a nice aesthetic change in DA2. Unfortunately, we can't play them. Ah well.

I know DA2 hasnt come out yet but im thinking of the DA3 If we continue the road of one character ( which i dont mind at all) will we be playing a dwarf or elf as i can not see my self doing that in origins it was find as i could go back to my human. I need to connect to my character elves and dwarves are awesome but i cant connect to them well compared to humans and i am 6 foot 5 i need to play a human or a Qunari.

WHAT?! Connencting with a character has absolutely nothing to do with height! It's about past experiences, views on the world, memories, personality, likes, dislikes, quirks of character. Not height. I love playing as an elf, not because of their height. I hate playing as a dwarf, not becuase of their height. You wouldn't see me going up to Sporty McSport and saying, "We're the same height, we obviously have a real connection. Let's be best friends.". And that's becuase, (he's likely to punch me in the face), we have absolutely nothing in common.

I played as a City Elf, mainly, and I could really relate to my character as I have been through similar experiences. It's why I connected with Alistair, with Morrigan, etcetera, etcetera. But if I played as a human noble, I had nothing in common with him, apart from personality. So I connected with him.

You can connect with every character as long as you can relate to something. How height relates to this, I'll never know.
