I play role-playing games to play as someone who is NOT myself. If you want explore the world as yourself, THEN GO OUTSIDE.
While I can understand providing humans as an option, and that they were most popular, and I anticipate enjoying DA2 (I will not be playing remotely as myself) Bioware shouldn't limit itself to humans just because all their customers are humans.

I think the way BioWare did the avatars for the dwarves and elves is really what hurt the races. Seems like they were still using the lego mechanics from NWN, meaning we got stuck with guerrilla arms and boy-hips.
I thought the human female bodies were worse.

Why wouldn't you play as yourself. That is what Role-playing is there for usually if you dont mind playing something else then go play a first person shooter who has a default profile.Fidget6 wrote...

Role-playing is there for you to role-play as a character. You know there's this really great game where you can play as yourself, all you have to do is walk out your front door! I hear the graphics and characters are fantastic. Best part is, it's free!
btw I do play games of all genres, including some FPS's, though unfortunately FPS's tend to make me nauseous, so I can't play them too often.

Plus, just because a character isn't exactly like you doesn't mean you should be unable to relate to them. I'm a human woman of 5'10" with black hair and pale skin but that doesn't mean I can't be intrigued by a 4'0" tan bearded male dwarf character or that I can't relate with his situations or emotions. Every day people react to me as I am, it would be more interesting to experience new things if given a choice. I mean how many of you actually know how to use a sword and go tromping through the woods killing wolves and bears with it? Yet you can relate to a character who does those things and has those skills.

If we couldn't be qunari, then I would also settle for an elf, but it would have to be something different from city or dailish elves which we've already seen. Perhaps playing as a descendant from the elves of Arlathan, which somehow gives you special elf powers? I don't know.
Dalish and City elves are the descendants of the elves of Arlathan. There isn't anything "more elf than elf" that the setting postulates beyond the Dalish possibly for trying to rediscover their history and past culture. And you don't get special elf-powers beyond what the Dalish Keepers may practice if there is anything particularly different about it. And that wouldn't necessarily be something a human couldn't learn, just something that is kept between Keepers and their Firsts. But if you WANT to be that sort of elf, then Dalish is your bet.

Eg. the default options for the story if you do NOT import from DAO:
The Human is all good, puts Alistair on throne and survives the Archdemon.
Poor elf on the other hand dies against the Archdemon.
Whilst the Dwarf on the other hand is a sh*t, exiles alistair, sends loghain to his death etc.
Both the Dwarf and Elf races get the short end of the stick.

Why would you choose to play as a human when given a choice?
(General answer)
Because you like playing humans.
(DA:O specific answer)
1. Humans are the tallest PC race
2. Humans are the most numerous race
3. The majority of major NPCs are human
4. The kingdom you're defending is your own
5. You're not looked down upon or considered an oddity (for HN, not human mage)

My first DAO playthrough was with a Dwarf commoner. Sexing up Morrigan was hilarious (albeit very difficult... talk about a blast of icy wind...)

Sounds like the elves get a nice aesthetic change in DA2. Unfortunately, we can't play them. Ah well.

I know DA2 hasnt come out yet but im thinking of the DA3 If we continue the road of one character ( which i dont mind at all) will we be playing a dwarf or elf as i can not see my self doing that in origins it was find as i could go back to my human. I need to connect to my character elves and dwarves are awesome but i cant connect to them well compared to humans and i am 6 foot 5 i need to play a human or a Qunari.
WHAT?! Connencting with a character has absolutely nothing to do with height! It's about past experiences, views on the world, memories, personality, likes, dislikes, quirks of character. Not height. I love playing as an elf, not because of their height. I hate playing as a dwarf, not becuase of their height. You wouldn't see me going up to Sporty McSport and saying, "We're the same height, we obviously have a real connection. Let's be best friends.". And that's becuase, (he's likely to punch me in the face), we have absolutely nothing in common.
I played as a City Elf, mainly, and I could really relate to my character as I have been through similar experiences. It's why I connected with Alistair, with Morrigan, etcetera, etcetera. But if I played as a human noble, I had nothing in common with him, apart from personality. So I connected with him.
You can connect with every character as long as you can relate to something. How height relates to this, I'll never know.
