If I'm forced to play an elf or dwarf I probably won't buy the game.

Why?

Because more often than not dwarves and elves are just patterned after some sort of human archetype so I don't see why fantasy writers continue to drag them out. I don't find the dwarf origins more compelling because most of the actors are midgets, and I don't think the elves are made more interesting by their pointy ears. Get rid of them.

Anyways, I wasn't threatening Bioware or issuing ultimatums. Just stating a general fact--if a game were all about dwarves dwarfing and elves elfing, I'd not be interested and would pass on the game.

Also, I am a human and we humans are all racist.

The only reason I wouldn't want to be a dwarf is because it would stop me from being a mage.

If it was a choice between elf or dwarf, then fair play.

I think DA3 will go back to all three races. There was a fair amount of whining at the lack of a voiced character in origins. Given the time and monetary concerns they were forced to choose between a voiced PC and the mass customization. If this game does anywhere as well as the last (and it seems to be shaping up that way IMHO), then the monetary concerns for the next game will be less and hiring six voice actors for the same character will be more plausible.

I play role-playing games to play as someone who is NOT myself. If you want explore the world as yourself, THEN GO OUTSIDE.

Haha, my point exactly!

Why wouldn't you play as yourself. That is what Role-playing is there for usually if you dont mind playing something else then go play a first person shooter who has a default profile.

That is not what role playing is for, a lot of people do try to model characters after their ideal self, and thats ok, but it is hardly what RPG's are.  I have never had a problem playing as other races or sexes even in pnp, I dont look at it as an extention of myself, or my ideal self.  I see my PC as a character in an epic novel, one that the players and GM get to write as they play, where you will never be certain of an outcome until it is over.

I would love playing a Qunari, specially an exile. Even more so if you were forced to rip out your horns a la Hellboy in the first movie. Besides, Qunari can be Warriors, Mages and Rogues, and are way more original than elfs and dwarfs.

Honestly, I get so bored of humans.

Why?

Because just about every multi-race game, sci fi or fantasy, humans are just out and out better than everyone else.

Sure, it may be stated that some other races are 'better' than humans are--they may be 'smarter' or more magically/technologically inclined, whatever. But who is the typical hero of the story? Human. Who has to save the world in the place of all the superior folk? The monkey.

At a certain point, I get tired of playing what amounts to a Mary Sue race, because regardless of what you're told, inevitably, we find out that humans are better than everyone at everything.

Ya know, millions play as Link, and he's an elf.

Despite the tiny percentage who choose non-humans when given a range of options, I think a DA game with a Dalish elf protagonist could connect with a mass audience if he weren't presented as "the elfin option" but simply as "our hero, Stabsalot."

And if he were extremely butch.

on those Japaneese things this is really blur. Actually Link is a 'Hylian'', who have ears like the elves, but their culture is mostly based on european/asian culture, giving him any ''Knightish'' archetypes : The sword (can be compared to Excalibur or Durandal ), the princess to save, he wear her colours on his shield, the ''Courtly Love'' and the fact they do not kiss 'emselves... and moar. this make the character too much human and less Sylvan/Elvish. and, of course, the game is awesome.

something awesome and very asian is the fact that he WAS lefty (**** the Wii... **** it hard... and **** it harder...). it break every european concepts.

Back to thread, I do not support this idea for the Dwarf. however i'd like to play a Qunari, their new look is AWE-SOME.

I like having the options. I have so far played an elf and a human throughout the game - I haven'thad the game long so I haven't had time for more than 2 completions plus random messing about with the Origins after which I have ended up deleting the characters either afterwards or part of the way through because I had changed my mind about saving them for future attempts. I've done all the Origin stories except Dwarf Commoner. I want to do that but I really want to play Human Female Rogue so I can marry Alistair and also because my first ever character, a Human Female Warrior had to be scrapped early on due to my folly in not saving appropriately. So I'm torn as to which I should play next.

I made a poll in the hopes of solving my dilemma on who to play after I'm done with Awakenings:

The Human option will resemble my character profile pic as I have made her already. I've not made the Dwarf yet.

I really enjoyed the City Elf orgin playing a female elf. I killed Vaughn and enjoyed it. I have finished Orgins with both male and female humans as well as two different female city elves. I also love the Mage orgin with female elf and human. I would like in a future DA release to have the choice of playing an elf again. My dwarves never got past Ostagar, just couldn't get into the character, same with the Dalish.

What's not to "get into"? I don't get it. How is playing a human so different than an elf or dwarf?

I played dwarf noble first, then city elf and now I'm playing human mage. I had no problem.  Do you simply not like how dwarves look aesthetically?

No. Unlike most people around here, I actually have willpower.

But it doesn't matter, I doubt they'd make such a game. They say they chose human because it makes the most sense for the story in DA2, but really it's because almost everyone played human in DAO and very few people care for playing elf or dwarf.

I tend to only play elves when they are different then in most fantasy settings and dragon age did that. Dwarfs well they did not seem to different to me and I don't like the underground. Human well I did not want to be a nobleman or a mage. Although I am not  at all upset that Hawke is human.

I don't know about an Elf... but I'm 99% certain that we'll never be forced to play as a dwarf. It would be a very dangerous commercial move considering the tiny percentage of players who played them in DA:O.

In DA 3 the main character should totally be a mhabari, with Hawke and our warden as companions. That would be da shizz.

I can't get through DA:O as a human without trying really damn hard. Elves are a PITA too. I've only fully completed the game on a mage (but felt too powerful and didn't care for the origin) and dwarf origins. I don't know why, I just couldn't get into the characters of the humans and elves.

I'd give, like, fifty bucks to be "forced" to play as a dwarf. :)

I'd prefer that over a human at this point. I was actually not bothered by having to be one in DA2, until I realized that all this "We wanted a more personal story" stuff was really just a big "Screw you, you don't matter" to the 5% of us that actually had enough of an open mind to at least TRY all of the origins.

No, you don't have any more willpower than the typical gamer.  You'll by it.

If they decide to tell a story about an elven uprising and the founding of the third elven lands I doubt they'd use a human protagonist.

I would be fine playing a DA game as any race. As long as the story is solid, nothing else really matters.

Exactly, I've never gotten this fetish for whatever race floats your boat. They're all the same once the game begins other than aesthetics and once you slap armor on them you can barely tell them apart.

I'd play a well written game as any race.
