I've read a lot of hate posted towards Bioware on these forums coming from a perceived "retcon" of the Reapers and the lore about them from the first Mass Effect.  I've seen a ton of comments about why it's stupid the Reapers could have just flown to the milky way or they only attack planets one at a time or they're nigh indestructible or it's stupid you can kill one with a sniper rifle....

So I got to thinking.  These complaints always seem to claim some sort of basis in fact.  That something Bioware told us about the Reapers is being contradicted.  So I decided to do a little research based on knowledge from the games and the E.U. to see exactly what we actually have been told about the Reapers.

There are three categories to this knowledge.  Confirmed facts, unreliable narrator and schizophrenic speculation.

Confirmed facts:  These come from the only two reliable sources I could think of.  Shepard's own experiences and Vigil.

-The Reapers have been extinguishing advanced organic life in a cycle that has gone on longer than any can comprehend.
-They are capable of dominating the minds of organic beings and bending them to their will
-They can cybernetically enhance and alter lifeforms
-Even when severely destroyed they are capable of indoctrinating organic beings
-It is possible to destroy them.
-They can repurpose organic species for their needs - The Collectors and the Keepers
-They have a greater understanding of the technology behind the mass relays and the citadel
-They hibernate in dark space and return to harvest resources, technology and melt species down into paste but the reasons why are still unknown.

Unreliable Narrarator:  These come from sources that cannot be taken at their word due to nature of both.  Sovereign and EDI.  Sovereign because it IS a Reaper and therefore cannot be taken at its word.  Why?  The same reason you can ask someone over the internet how big their weiner is and expect to get an honest answer.  EDI because she is a HUMAN MADE A.I.  All of her exposition as to what the collectors were doing on the collector base can only be considered at best speculation and not fact.

-They are eternal
-Their numbers will blacken the sky
-They created the mass relays and the citadel
-They melt people into paste to facilitate reproduction
-They take on physical traits of the source species they are created from.

Schizophrenic speculation:  You.  The forum goers.
-The Reapers cannot be defeated
-If like they can like fly here then all your choices in Mass Effect 1 are like not going to count.
-ALL the Reapers are supposed to look like giant cephelopods so the idea of the Reaper baby flies in the face of all the facts we've been provided.


Look I'm not trying to be a complete jackoff.  I'm just trying to point out that we really don't know all that much about the Reapers.  I'm sick of reading threads about how "this contradicts the science of the Reapers... etc... etc.. etc..."  So next time you have a complaint about the lore of the Reapers ask yourself.  Which part of the three categories of lore and I drawing on?
