Hi All,

Just a quick announcement for those who may be interested: I have achieved a way of adding a Fog of War to the area maps.

Check out more information in this blog entry: http://worldofalthea...fog-of-war.html

I know it was something I was always trying to get added in NWN, so thought others may also be pleased to know it is possible.

The code will obviously become available when I release my mod, but I am considering releasing the code earlier if there is a real desire for it.

You can leave comments on my blog as well as here if you wish.

Thanks for your interest.

Lance.

EDIT: The Vault upload is awaiting approval. It is called: LB Map Functions - Fog of War!

NOW AVAILABLE AT THIS LINK: http://nwvault.ign.c...I.Detail&id=157

Lance, you're amazing.

I would *really* like this. I've worked out something on my own that was fine for my purpose but nothing worth releasing. This would make my stinky swamp caves so much more interesting from a gameplay side...I cannot even begin to express my gratitude at you figuring this out.

Nice work, Lance. It's nice to see how creative you've been in using GUIs to increase the scope of what NWN2 can be. :)

Hi Chaos Wielder,

Many thanks. :)

I will sort out the code and upload it as soon as possible then, especially as you express such an interest and say it so well.

Hi KevL,

Thank you.

Keep an eye open for the Vault link. I will update here when I upload it.

Hi MasterChanger,

Thank you.

I do think that allowing us to program the GUIs with XML has opened up a great deal to builders.

Thanks Kamal.

Reason enough to upload to the Vault. Posted Image

just to bring this out :

i Trust this works fine, between Saves??

edit, if not it's more reason to Keep Playing. Or, somebody can work up a supplemental.

Is there any way to get this to work without the players having to keep the map open, or is that an essential condition?

Hi KevL,

Yes, this works between saves, as there is a map refresh function that updates the map each time the area is entered (even between loads).

By the way, how is it you remember my old forum name? (Bard.) Or did you see it at the blog?

Hi Mad Hatter,

I am reasonably certain it could be done, but is not my intention to do so for gaming reasons. i.e. Mapping is supposed to be "active" and therefore cannot be done "passively" (map closed) or when in combat.

I'm sure someone with a little know how could adjust the script to make it "Passive" if need be.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm less interested in this to model characters actually drawing maps and more for traditional fog of war.

Nicely done all the same.

We'll need it for BGR :)

Fog of war is one of the big missing feature of NWN2. That's an amazing adition.

Hi Mad Hatter,

If you have any need of fog of war for maps and just a little knowledge in scripting, this will still be the best way to go. :) I will look at adding a switch to allow constant mapping (even when closed) for you. It would have to be at a later date, as I am trying to put something together for release now and adding a switch does mean adding a few more checks and a slight rearrangement of how the code fires. It's not impossible, just requires a slight rewrite. ;)

Many thanks Shallina,

I will let you know when I have uploaded it to the Vault. All I ask is for people to vote and give me credit when and where used. :)

I am interested in this as well, but agree with Mad Hatter in that I'd be more interested if the mapping were automatic. If a switch could be added, I would be very happy!

Whenever you post and release it, I would sincerely appreciate it if you allowed me to copy it over to the Citadel and place it into the Citadel School of Persistent World Building section. With all due credit, of course.

Hi MokahTGS,

Just to be clear ... mapping *is* "automatic" all the while the map is open. The only reason I prevent it when closed is so PCs cannot map if running away from monsters (in combat) or not "actively" mapping by not having the map open in the first place. Having said that, this can be added at a later date. I explain the approach in the manual I am writing for this at the moment.

No, you did not miss anything. :) It's just that I first used the name "Bard" many years ago when I first joined the original Bioware forums (the set *before* the last NWN ones). It got changed when I misunderstood the way it would be shown on the changeover and remained as my name ever since. In other words, I don't think I have been known as the "Bard of Althea" on the forums for nearly 9 years ... or thereabouts! :) I was surprised when I saw you mention me as such.

No problem ...By the way, I dropped the hint to you about this system before anyone else in a post I made to you in your own forum post. I was surprised I did not see you comment then. ;) (The meta-gaming post three days ago.)

Hi All,

I have tested it as far as possible, but need confirmtion that I have uploaded everything required. It's too easy for me to mess this sort of thing up, so let me know.

I am off to bed now, so cannot respond until tomorrow if there are any issues. I hope all goes well.

Many thanks.

Didn't want to derail the thread, so I made no mention of it, other than to say, Learn something new everyday or something like that. I figured, as you said at that time you weren't ready to tout it fully that it would come in the fullness of time.

Hi Lance Botelle,

This is simply awesome O_o I'm quite sure that it will be used in many PW and totally certain it will be added in the Griffin Island ^_^

By the way, I also agree on the automatic switch (not by default, but as a possibility), if that does not bread anything,

Hi E.C. Patterson,

Chances are the mapping system will be seen in Trinity before my own mod then. Ha!

Hi dunniteowl,

I thought I was too subtle. ;)

Hi MachinSin,

Glad you like it. :) I feel it is something sorely needed for NWN2.

I am working on a "passive" version later today. If I get it working, I will upload it alongside the other version.

I may have to tweak it a little to ensure it is not too CPU intensive for PWs.

Hi All,

For those wanting the "Passive" version of this code, which allows the map to be updated even when closed, it is now available: http://nwvault.ign.c...I.Detail&id=157

Please vote!
