I'm going to guess Sylvius isn't one of those people who for some reason has a problem understanding the implications of an unreliable narrator.

1 - Can we import from Origins into this demo?
The demo does not have a character or save game import feature.
2 - Is there a character creator with the demo or do we play default Hawke?
No. While you can modify your character in the main game, this is disabled in the demo

Based on this, I'm definitely not playing the demo before I get the main game.

I want my first exposure to the voice-over to be associated with the face I design.  It's more likely to work for me then because I won't associate it with a different face.

Wait what..

Well, you did nameyourself Mad.

I'm actually rather pleased that the DX11 effects are disabled in the demo. Hopefully, when my game arrives, I'll be all "Cool!" =P

Really?  I didn't know that.

Thanks for the tip.  I'll turn off the sound until after character creation, then.

Where did Bioware say that Hawke will speak before the CC in the main game?

It is more or less, I believe, something like this (specifics of the cutscenes removed):

Game starts
You pick from six default Hawkes.  M/F versions of warrior, rogue, mage.
Cutscene
Exaggerated gameplay with chosen default Hawke
Cutscene
Character creator
Normal gameplay with custom Hawke
cont'd

It establishes the unreliable narrator by portraying "Hawke the legend" before "the real Hawke."  Though the voice I believe remains consistent.

They haven't said it as far as I know, but we've seen it - as I describe above.  From leaked videos, and reports of people playing at conventions.  It may or may not be changed in retail.

Thank you. I remember that part of choosing Hawke in the combat walkthrough, but I didn't link it to the main game.

Wouldn't this be sending the wrong signals? I expect a lot of rage on the forums and people refusing to buy the game because they can't edit their character unless it's said in the demo itself the CC is disabled.

WTF? No character creator? I actually want to make a Barack Obama Hawke before I get the full game.

Great. Grr.

Too bad on the character creator. I may not be able to resist the demo regardless.

Okay. So, um, I'm going to steer clear of this demo now.

Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I don't seem or feel that excited about the demo coming out. Granted I'll try it ... around the new EQ2 expansion heh.

Wow really?  People would /ragequit because they can't use the character creator?  Can this even be imported into DA2?  Maybe they're put the CC out seperately like it was for Origins.

Don't get your panties in a knot so early people.  Posted Image

I'm bummed theres no character creator with the demo since that's what I'm really interested in, however, I'll still play it for the cool sword.

I've not seen whatever video it was where this happened, so i admitedly don't know what i'm talking about... but do we know they haven't done this like the opening scene of ME2? where shepherd has his/her helmet on for the opening scene before we get to the CC?

I really, really love it, and think as a narrative device it's a bloody genius way to introduce the player to the unreliable narrator.

Sure, its like ME2's opening sequence: cool the first time you play the game, but a bore and nuisance when you just want to get to the character creator.

And even once you get to the CC, if its still lit up like its in some poorly lit basement, lord knows you'll spend a decent chunk of time making your Hawke only to get into the real game in real lighting to find that it looks totally messed up. Oh, but whats that, now you have to reload and go through the opening bit again just to get back to the CC.

Or hit up the Mirror of Transformation once you hit Kirkwall and tweak to your heart's delight until it's "right" without haveing to go through the opening bit all over againl.

No, it's fundamentally different as ME2 isn't establishing an unreliable narrator.  Even if the rest of your post is still probably true.

Except for that.

I've played the demo, you see default Hawke's face quite clearly in the exaggerated section, as well as Bethany or Carver depending on your class choice. So different to ME certainly, but as Shorts says it can be explained as unreliable narration if required.

Personally I'd prefer to get the CC first, it just seems odd that Varric would change some of the more mundane elements of Hawke and Bethany's appearance. For example, he would be 'exaggerating' that someone's black Hawke and Carver have suddenly become white amongst all the other changes. I don't see the point in having that visual discontinuity when the unreliable narration is established clearly enough just by Cassandra's reaction.

However should it stay the way it is I won't really care either.

I imagine it is because it is a strong establishment of the disconnect between the legend and reality.  It's like... getting punched in the face really hard by it early.  They don't have to keep reminding the player that Varric is unreliable (unless they want to, they're just not obligated) by making it extremely clear early on that hey, Varric is more than capable of messing with the facts.

We've had a James K. Polk Hawke, and my office mate assures me that an Obama Hawke and a Clinton Hawke are both possible. so even if you can't do it in the demo, you can do it in the full game. Enjoy, folks!

That's not gonna go down too well with Bioware's Mexican customers.
