I don't see the point in having that visual discontinuity when the unreliable narration is established clearly enough just by Cassandra's reaction.

I imagine it is because it is a strong establishment of the disconnect between the legend and reality.  It's like... getting punched in the face really hard by it early.  They don't have to keep reminding the player that Varric is unreliable (unless they want to, they're just not obligated) by making it extremely clear early on that hey, Varric is more than capable of messing with the facts.

That's such an incredibly contrived way of doing it though. I personally loath the approach, because it assumes the audience needs to be hit in the head with it.

Hi folks. Here are the answers to some of your most frequently asked questions.

1 - Can we import from Origins into this demo?
The demo does not have a character or save game import feature.
2 - Is there a character creator with the demo or do we play default Hawke?
No. While you can modify your character in the main game, this is disabled in the demo
3 - Does the demo allow you to just start the full version of DA2 from where the demo leaves off?
No.
The demo begins with the beginning of Dragon Age II and then shows you a
glimpse of a mission that occurs later on in the game.
4 - Will it show off DX11 effects on the PC?
DX11 features will only be available on the PC purchase copy of Dragon Age 2.
5 - Can we play Male and Female Hawke?
Yes you can choose male or female Hawke.
6 - How do I get the demo for my Xbox 360 or my PS3?
The xbox 360 demo will be available through Live. The PS3 demo will be available through Playstation Network.

Thanks for the answers.

One (or two) other question: Besides DX11 features, can the graphics still be adjusted in the PC Demo (Detail, AA, resolution, ect.)?

If not, what are the settings at?

I've not seen whatever video it was where this happened, so i admitedly don't know what i'm talking about... but do we know they haven't done this like the opening scene of ME2? where shepherd has his/her helmet on for the opening scene before we get to the CC?

I've played the demo, you see default Hawke's face quite clearly in the exaggerated section, as well as Bethany or Carver depending on your class choice. So different to ME certainly, but as Shorts says it can be explained as unreliable narration if required.

Personally I'd prefer to get the CC first, it just seems odd that Varric would change some of the more mundane elements of Hawke and Bethany's appearance. For example, he would be 'exaggerating' that someone's black Hawke and Carver have suddenly become white amongst all the other changes. I don't see the point in having that visual discontinuity when the unreliable narration is established clearly enough just by Cassandra's reaction.

However should it stay the way it is I won't really care either.

well alright then, i guess i've been told lol. well, in the case of my Black Hawke (suddenly my PC has become a helicopter?), i shall assume that Varric operates similarly to Mr. Stephen Colbert, in that he doesn't see race.

Hmmmmm.....so the demo has no character creator and you can't import and you can't continue from where you left off. I guess this means I shall skip the demo(If I have the willpower to do so). I would rather have the first time I see the game and hear the dialogue be with my canon custom created Hawke. I find the first time I play through a game is the time I get most emotionally invested, so I don't want to waste that emotion on a demo. Nevertheless, I am sure the demo will show the game play well and will make many people happy who want to see if the game play is fun for them before they purchase it.

Wouldn't this be sending the wrong signals? I expect a lot of rage on the forums and people refusing to buy the game because they can't edit their character unless it's said in the demo itself the CC is disabled.

I think when  Chris says "disabled" he really means "disabled" -- there's a button for customization, but it won't do anything except give you a tooltip saying what it would do if it was working. It's easier to do it that way than to have someone do a different character creation screen just for the demo.

Thanks for finally telling me Priestly, now I know I'm NOT getting the demo. Although I can do a quick playthrough for the sword.

They already have one of those, if you saw the leaked convention footage.

WTF? No character creator? I actually want to make a Barack Obama Hawke before I get the full game.

We've had a James K. Polk Hawke, and my office mate assures me that an Obama Hawke and a Clinton Hawke are both possible. so even if you can't do it in the demo, you can do it in the full game. Enjoy, folks!

Wait... really? So if one could make Barack Obama, one could also make Justin Beiber? XDD
My mind is reeling with possibilities.

No.
Hawke has a fixed age, you wouldn't be able to make him that young.
But that ugly is a different story entirely. B)

While im gonna make a hawk that looks a lot like the picture on the left of my post. I think its a bit odd (and haven't seen it stated anywhere) if what Mr. Shorts says is true. I mean I get the idea of the 'legend' but why would, if your a black dude or otherwise, suddenly be turned into white-guy for the Legend? I just find that a bit odd, even as an unreliable narrator. They don't tend to screw up that badly, more so if they spent time with the guy. More so when it doesn't 'add' anything to the story. They tend to exaggerate everything else about the person not completely swap there skin-tone.

Wouldn't bug me either way I just doubt they did that. Ah well, hopefully Dev's clear it up or someone can point me to where they already did.

Meh, upon further consideration, it's not surprising that Legend!Hawke would be a bearded white dude. after all, people still think Jesus was white. (note: that was NOT meant to be an inflamatory religious comment)

I really, really hope this is changed for final product.

I really, really love it, and think as a narrative device it's a bloody genius way to introduce the player to the unreliable narrator.

Yeah, I get that it’s to relate the exaggerated bit. (If in fact that it wasn’t implemented for demo purposes only and will change once the product is ready for ship) I can see, and even think it’s a great narrative introduction to Varric’s story telling and fish-tale ability to exaggerate inflate the actual story. I can see him embellishing things such as my fireball spell blazing into a tornado of flames that killed everything in it’s wake, or that my sword sliced through the darkspawn like butter without me breaking a sweat. I can even see him making Bethany’s hoohah’s bigger, or giving male Hawke muscles of those to equal He-Man. What I don’t get, and perhaps I am alone in this, is why my looks would have to be exaggerated in such a way that I am completely unrecognizable. I love default femHawke. She is beautiful, no doubt. But, it would be nice to see the face I choose behind the initial story.

And as someone else pointed out, it’ll be a pain to have to go through the exaggerated opening every time I play and decide my nose is too big, or my eyes aren’t right and have to restart. I hated that about ME2, hated it. However, this is by no means a deal breaker and I am most certain that I will enjoy the game regardless. I just don’t see the sense behind the decision, is all.

Again as pointed out, there is an in game device that lets you change your appearance that ME2 didn't have so it's far less of an issue where you don't have to go back and redo everything unless you feel like you have to be absolutely perfect from the get go.

Yes, I feel like I should be perfect from the get-go. I feel like I want to begin the game with the face I choose, instead of having to wait until I arrive at Kirkwall, find the mirror and hope to avoid any additional cut scenes in a face I do not want in the meantime. Yes, this is how I feel.

Edit: Then again, this conversation could be entirely moot due to the possibility they put the character creator that way in the demo so people could jump right into the game and not waste time with the CC, and the finished product will be different--or has it been confirmed this is absolute? I can't recall a dev confirming it, though I could be wrong.
