I imagine it is because it is a strong establishment of the disconnect between the legend and reality. It's like... getting punched in the face really hard by it early. They don't have to keep reminding the player that Varric is unreliable (unless they want to, they're just not obligated) by making it extremely clear early on that hey, Varric is more than capable of messing with the facts.
