I have played Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and Dragon age but have picked up NWN2 for the frist time after seeing it at a bargain price on steam with both expansions.
So first of all I was wondering if there are any essential mods? Either ones you can't imagien playing withot or literally essential ones that fix bugs that wern't fixed in the last official patch, etc.
Also what is the difrence between mods and custom content?
And finally is this the most active forum for NWN2 or are their other sites?

What other games call mods is generally referred to as custom content. In nwn, mods are new modules with new stories made by the community that may or may not tie into official content (and many community modules are as good or better than the official content). Yes, this can cause some confusion among new players.blazin130791 wrote...

This is the official forum for nwn2.
There's a thread in the general forums covering popular "mods" as you know them.
Hope that helps.

Try here
It's a good list but a little daunting.
To be frank my game is entirely unchanged/modded and I still get a lot out of it, but I play very little at the moment.
For modules (mods) as Kamal_ has said there is a lot of good stuff out there. Many have custom content but provide all the tools you needs to play them.
There are ways to customize the official material as you will see from the link, also search Kaldor Silverwand on the vault or see his recent thread for another good place to start.
Oh and, welcome to the community. There is a lot going on as I hope you will see.

Thanks you two, yeah I guess it will take my a while to get my head around everything but that just keeps things intresting haha. It's allways a good sign when a relatively old game still has a strong following.
The onl problem I'vehad with the game so far is the camera being slightly annoying to position right. Is this the case for everyone or do the settings need twiddling?

Thats more whining from nwn1 holdouts than reality. The real problem is the ghosting and jerky walking movement they introduced with their final patch.

Exploration mode camera is the most similar to Baldur's Gate and NWN1.
Since it was recently released on steam, here are a couple of steam threads on the camera that you might find useful.

you can switch the camera mod. there are 3 or 4 of them. One of them will suit you better than other.
Also to rotate the camera around your character, just put the mouse on the edge of the screen. (yup it's not right click and rotate like in many 3D games)

Also do make sure to apply the config tweaks listed on the Wiki.
I use character mode a lot for immersion factor (can enjoy the beautifull and highly detailed graphics of the surroundings much, much more - and particularly newer modules, like Path of Evil for example, have some beautifull graphics) despite the quirky controls, constant problems with orientation... and the annoying "can't see anything after passing through a door/stairway" issue (I use click to move). Fortunately with the wiki tweaks at least the turn lag is mostly eliminated.
But for any serious combat I switch to strategy mode (free camera) in order to have any control over it.
I use middle mouse button to rotate the camera. But as it's a button on the roller in my mouse, pressing and holding it all the time is not very comfortable. Fortunately I have a customisable side thumb button and I mapped middle button to it. With that camera turning is much less of an issue.

Thanks, I've got used to the camera now. I've found controlling it using the keyboard much eaier than with the mouse.
Something that has surprised me is the graphics arn't all that much worse than dragon age, in my eyes anyway.
One final question, is there anything I can do (except for lowering the settings) that could improve performance. Around half the time I load up my game it lags horribly, but the other half of the time it runs fine. I know other games sometimes have custom content/mods that help increase performance...
