Powerful item DLC is pretty much monetized cheat codes unless the game was designed around everyone having them.

The packaging is just a marketing trick so that (1) they seem more special and (2) gamers who normally don't like to cheat won't feel bad about using them. I highly doubt any of the game designers thought would be more fun to play with these items.

I'm sure most gamers would hesitate to download a mod that decked out your character from the start.

It looks like 90% of everyones' arguments are null & void since we won't be getting DLC items in our inventory right at the start.

I think we're bound to see "dirty" tricks designed into games as DLC grows prevalent.

I'm sure some game has already implemented this:

Let the highest difficulty unlock some extra content/achievement

Sell overpowered DLC to frustrated gamers who can't beat the game on that difficulty.

So why do I think the above is bad? Because the game is no longer designed around being as fun as possible but around selling more DLC.

I'm not saying that Bioware does this (yet), nor that I would blame a company for exploiting it, but I can't see how it's a good development for the customer.

They say that a picture is worth more than a thousand words, so here it is:

Notice that the same BioWare points cost more on Electronic Arts Store compared to the BioWare Store. I also can't buy the packages with 560 BW points or 400 BW point on EA Store. It's a practice similar to Microsoft's, where you end up buying more points than you need.

It actually looks like you're comparing two different currencies, dearlyblvd. One in (presumably) U.S. dollars and one in "R$", which I'm unfamiliar with. A quick Google search indicates it's Brazilian reals, or possibly South African rands.

R$ = South Africa.
and please just note the BioWare Point follows the Microsoft Point currency.

Ya make sure you are looking at it right! What is that R? R$23.90 might be a money system from somewhere else. Their money into ours

Stanley, as you are a BioWare moderator, I respect you more than the average user and I was happy that you were kind enough to answer my PM, but you are wrong in this situation. I will prove with another screenshot:

As I already told you in PM, I still can't buy BW points from BW Store. As you can see, the only method available for me is to buy using debit or credit card, and my debit card is getting declined by the system, as I'm getting the error "Card CSC is invalid.". This problem isn't that rare, as others clients shared the same issue in the past, yet nobody fixed it.

I pretty much hate this DLC mania, but as I felt in love with the ME franchise, I was willing to buy the three extra DLCs to fully appreciate the story, but it seems that I can't.

It's hard to make a serious case that DLC is hurting Bio's image. DAO had more-or-less the same kind of DLC that DA2's going to have, as you say. And DAO.... was a success. Same thing for ME2. They won that Studio of the Year award after all the DLC started. And so on.

Bioware is a great company with a great reputation.  They make great games.  I don't think DLC shenanigans alone will destroy the company or make people stop buying their games.  But ever since Bioware was bought by EA, gamers are wary of the influence EA may have over Bioware.  SecuROM DRM on Mass Effect was the first bit of unpleasantness gamers had to deal with since Bioware and EA collided.  Now we have all of this bothersome pre-release DLC.  I think those two things may have reduced Bioware's shiny reputation a bit with some gamers.  If we continue to see more bad business from Bioware, their reputation may eventually get dragged down into the mud.

Hey, dearlyblvd, i'd appreciate it if you didn't spam this thread withy our tech issue, which we have already talked about in PM. i'd also encourage you to look more closely at the currencies you are comparing.

1. The more promo items for us the better

2. pirate scumbags will get less! and that's great! screw em!

3. Long term da followers and fans get something out of it :):)

I don't understand why someone wouldn't like free dlc... it's a piracy countermeasure + community support... if You don't like it then go back to 1990's where there were huge shops with pirated software for 50 cents and developers couldn't pay for coffee.

Wow Stanley, how you can't see that you are wrong in this topic about exchange rates? The second picture clearly shows 17,80 BRL, which equals to Brazilian Reals. The first picture shows $17,80 on BW store (R$17,80) and R$23,90 on EA Store.

R$ = BRL

I sent a message in the "Biowares points help" forum, I sent a message to you and Chris and I contacted EA live support twice. Nobody helped me. This problem could be easily fixed if EA store charged the same amount as BW store instead of ripping off their customers, as I believe that my debit card would work there.

If nobody from your company can help me, then should I simply remain silent? This topic is about DLCs. I'm not deviating from the main discussion.

Money problems as that guy stated but we don't need to get into this at all plus the moderrater looks like he doesn't want this to continue so I am going to stop and eye this forum very carefully!

Alright I think I get what you mean was just curious. Anyway back on topic, I don't have much of a problem with dlcs you get more content in the long run and end up paying about the same cost of an expansion pack. Only problem I have is when they try to sale it to you at camp.

@LoneFullmetal: Some of us will just get them with our game.
