Someone hasn't read my pedantic diatribe in this thread about how DLC is usually developed. I encourage you to read it, as it addresses--whether you agree with it or not--your main concerns.1varangian wrote...
I find all the launch date DLC and excessively complicated and aggressive marketing really, really annoying.
Just box the #&%n game and put it on the shelf. If it's good it will sell without confusing tricks. Cutting content just to release it as a separate DLC is very questionable.

not to mention, it would make testing the various combinations of content very difficult. i'm glad we're keeping it relatively simple!Stanley Woo wrote...
exactly, luckily I pre-ordered but if they had different characters and mission for different retailers, well that would really grind my gears.

I know that you mentioned that the old-school method of expansions has gone the way of wearing onions on our belts, or the eskimos and oilers actually being good, so Im just wondering if (seeing how it's been said that there is not going to be any other editions other than the special and vanilla versions) at some point in the future the DLC will be collected and sold in a disk version?

I have plenty of challenge in real life. And that's mostly interesting challenge since I'm a researcher. Games are meant to entertain and a lot of my friends (those who play games anyhow) also prefer fun and being overpowered over challenge.Sure, sometimes we all want some Demon's Souls (especially on vacation when free time is abundant) but in a game like DA2 I'd prefer to enjoy main story, gore, sidequests...
Since Stanley "kindly" closed my thread (which I don't really feel was connected to this one) I'll continue here.
I totally get it that some gamers want to breeze through combat and find that fun. Me, most of the times I find somewhat challenging combat to be more fun in an RPG. That's what difficulty settings are for, to cater to both of us.
I'm just worried that if the majority of gamers want fun, simple combat without challenge, developers are going to spend less time on tuning the harder difficulty settings and more time on DLC that makes combat even easier.
I think Bioware should also make some DLC that is intended for those of us that want more challenge, or are there too few of us to make it worthwhile? Just saying I'd feel more like pre-ordering if the bonus was an extra tough bonus boss instead of a free epic weapon...why can't we have both?

Such decisions are not anywhere near my hands and I can't predict the future. I would also be reluctant to provide any answer which would be taken out of context and mutated into an "iron clad, signed in blood, cross his heart, but he proooooooooooooooomised" tenet several months down the line.bsbcaer wrote...

There is nothing stopping companies from releasing DLC that caters to different sections of the audience. On the other hand, there is also nothing obligating companies to do so.Sheanos wrote...

I don't think I'd pay to download content that would make me fight an extra hard boss without any reward. If there was reward for defeating the boss, that reward had better be epic. Would you want a reward for defeating the boss? And, if so, what kind of reward would suffice without making you feel overpowered?

On topic, personally, I have no issue with the DLC. Speaking as a "hard core" fan, I will buy whatever, whenever they release and for however much. I realize I don't speak for the mass volume of fans though.
And, bsbcaer that was sacrilege against the Oilers! (coming from someone that used to watch Gretzky and the gang practice at W. Ed mall....I guess I just dated myself there) lol

nowadays, in 8 months, no one remembers who you were and no one's playing your game anymore.
It's also not true. I can't imagine playing a game for that little time. If it's any good at all I'll play it for years.

You are the minority, majority of people will move on shortly after beating the game. THere is quite a line up this year with Witcher 2 and Skyrim coming out this year.

I couldn't stand The Witcher, and all indications are that they're not changing the part of it I disliked.Phoenixblight wrote...

And while I had hope for Skyrim when Bethesda finally managed to meld real-time and stat-driven combat in FO3, they appear to have abandoned that development for TES5, so I doub't I'll enjoy that, as well.

IMHO downloadable content gives something else to look forward to, a way to continue adventures. Of course, an expansion is always very welcome, but I understand that they are much more costly and time-consuming to produce.
Sometimes when I read these forums it seems that people are getting more and more demanding and at times, downright rude. One generally doesn't argue with a book author or a movie producer, then why would you do that with a game developer? Constructive criticism is one thing, constant complaining and unwillingness to accept explanations is quite another.

Yes, I'd want a reward. There are tough creatures already in the game, the reward should be inline with the challenge presented. I understand that not everyone would want the content, just like I don't want the free epic weapons.
Though I suppose the profit margin is way higher for retexturing and changing some stats compared to designing a new encounter.
I just don't like the message coming from Bioware "Buy the signature edition and get this cool epic gear!".
If they really think having access to this gear improves the experience, why didn't they put similar things in the stock game?

Because they want to entice people to preorder?? Business-wise, I can't say I blame them for using that tactic. It certainly motivated me to preorder vs. buying it on or after 3/8.

Really? Don't want it? Don't like it? Don't download it or use it! What's "complicated" or "overwhelming" about it? Find the concept confusing that different retailers are offering different incentives? I guess you've never comparison shopped before. Feeling overwhelmed and pressured into making a purchase at a particular point in time because the special offer is going to expire? Guess you've never bought something on sale before.
I mean... really? Gosh, people do get worked up over the silliest things. Y'all got a right to your opinions but this seems like a silly thing to get your knickers in a twist over. Now, the fact that default Hawke has a beard instead of stubble... now that's something to get upset over!

DA:O DLC was appalingly handled. Having that guy in your camp.
Really you can't win this one.
You must try and present pre-order bonuses as a significant enticement and worthwhile.
Yet not make Home Premium users feel like second class citizens for not having this stuff.
How can you not feel like you are missing out if the pr-order stuff is so cool? Or if it is not cool then it backfires on you trying to sell pre-order bonuses.

It's not confusing. It's irritating. Irritating that practically none of the retailers outside of the favourited gamestop or amazonUS seem to have been correctly informed about all the promotions that they should be offering. Certainly the EU retailers are almost all in the dark.
