Wouldn't fat, round, Volus-shaped kids also work?

Kids in games are annoying as hell, so I'm glad they're not in Mass Effect.

Honestly, it's just laziness. Same with the ultra static feel of any hubworld.

I have no idea why people keep saying having children in the game would make it 18+ (by which I assume you mean AO because it is already M). It would in no way do that. I have no idea why one would think that. DA:O had children, Fallout 3 had foul mouthed swearing children that somehow kept their population stable, New Vegas had children in extreme slums chasing rats in front of a hooker hocking her wares, in Bioshock you could kill little girls, in Heavy Rain you're shown the dead bodies of children who are victims of a serial child murderer, etc.

Adding children in no way makes a game 18+.

Yup, Bioware is lazy. Their developers sitting around all day eating doughnuts while we, their loyal customers, slave 16 hours a day in the coal mines.

Not every good idea can make it into a game. Games have time contraints. They have budgets. Working on A to P means you can't put in Q to Z. Building, animating and voicing character models takes time and money. What would you give up for that added ambiance? I suspect most players would put it pretty low on their wishlists.

And yet all the games you quoted are 18...

18 in the UK is legal certification. M is just a suggestion PLEGI has no legal authority.
It may vary with other countries but that is how it is here.

Given how long the thread on making hub worlds actually feel alive went I'd assume it is fairly high on people's lists.  I know immersion is high on my list.  Secondly, changing the shapes of wireframes isn't difficult, and the skins would already be there.  If you're trying to build a realistic world then making it feel alive should be a top priority.  If so many other studios can do it there's no reason BW can't.

You'd have to clarify UK certifications for me.  In the US all of the above, including ME2, are rated M.  The only rating higher than that is AO which nobody ever does because big box retailers won't carry AO games.

My Shepard like to use kids to test out the effects of his Heavy Weapons. I still smile with glee when he fired the Cain into that Bus full of kids or the time he walked into a daycare to test how his Firestorm would work.

So basic answer is there are no kids in the game because Shepard in his spare time kills them all.

ME2 is a 15. I'm fairly sure ME is a 12 because I remember thinking how lame the sex scenes were in ME2 when it was a higher rated game. If not then it's a 15 as well.

The rating is the age you have to be to buy the game. You can get into pretty serious trouble if you sell to people below that age.

There is no AO rating here on games.

Conrad. Verner.

There, I answered your question, OP. Children are everywhere in Mass Effect. They're just taller than you'd expect.

Thanks, that clarifies it.  One thing though, surely DA:O was only 15 too, no?

Simply lazy. Did not feel like doing it. Besides, most races dont even have any females, how do you expect for there to be any kids running around?

Children? What are children? We are all born with hats and wigs. Then the wigs fall off and the hats get new owners.

Kids on the citadel? Shoplifting, pulling hanar tentacles and having races on the keepers? No way.

I don't recall KotOR having any children either (unless you count Mission). Sci-Fi just doesn't go well with children like Mag-Fi (Magical Fantasy).

On the other hand, you do have Grunt who was like 0 years old, and Liara, who is only 109. And Tali was barely an adult in ME1 - Pilgrimage is like the rite of passage for Quarians, no? And Jack is psychologically around 14 (no offense). And there's Conrad Verner, who is psychologically around 6.

I don' think that having kids in the game would push the game to an 18+, but if the kids are getting hurt, then I could see how that would push it to an 18+. I don't want kids to do any of the fighting or for me to see them get hurt, just have them around. Adds to the atmosphere.

Well i like said, you can just assume. Just like with female Turians, that problay stay home taking care of the little Turians.

Just remember Mass Effect 3 trailer, we know there are kids in London when those Reapers are attacking. Must you see their guts spilled too?

KOTOR did have plenty of children. There were only 3 or 4 models and they were all human. There was even a side mission where you try to learn to communicate with a stowaway child's broken Mandalorian dialect. In KOTOR 2 there was a side mission where you rescue someone's daughter on Nar Shadaa

I remember a comment on a modding website for TES4:Oblivion regarding a body replacer modification which allowes nudity for the females in the game.

Some idiot asked if the mod works with another mod that adds children to the game.

Everyone there was like "WTF".
