I have read quite a few people here have a man-crush bro-mance with Sten. Why if I may ask? I can see if it is because of the character, but game wise, he is at a disadvantage from characters like Oghren, lacking the first specialization. But I hear he gets extra stats to compensate (true?).
If he does, can he potentially outdamage Oghren? What spec works standalone enough for him? I recall seeing his spec in the Darkspawn Cronicles was clearly Reaver, which kinda fits him and doesn't fit him.:bandit:

You get him at a lower level so you can customize him a lot better.....and if you are on PC you can always get the 2 spec sten mod.

I'd say he's better than Oghren for a few reasons. One has already been mentioned: you get him early and can give him a better build. But the most important reason I personally prefer Sten is the simple fact that he's an interesting character. Oghren on the other hand is a bit of a stereotype.

Well Sten's strength is higher but Oghren fine too. I do like Sten's personality better. I get enough of Oghren's personality since I bring him along on the deep roads.

Being on the PC with the Respec mod, he is better than he used to be before Respec. My main gripe is his griping, complaining, etc; a pain now solved with gifts.

I use the toolset to edit the attributes on party members when they join me, I really hate when I get Oghren with a lot of points in cunning, magic and dexterity.

Just talk to Sten and you'll find out, bring him along with other party members and listen to him foil their pitifully pinned together self images or verbally spar with the more clever ones. Don't treat him like an idiot or try to be uber nice to him. He's a complex guy from an interesting society if you take the time to get to know him.

Yeah so he doesn't get two specs, broken record, so what? pump those two handed abilities and give him loads of strength and dexterity. I love him paired with Alistair in a fight. Alistair draws the mob and Sten cleans house. They are the perfect frontal assault team. Just make sure to get him drinking health as a tactic because he does go down quite quickly early on until he's built up a bit. Give him Indomitable and he won't get overpowered so much.

EDT: for spec Reaver or Berserker.

Sten has no racial bonus stats. He's Base 10+ Warrior bonus in each.

Sten base: 14/13/10/10/10/13

Human Warrior(including Alastair and Loghain) base: 15/14/10/11/11/13

Sten is one of my favorite party members, but he is mechanically sub-par, and that makes me sad.

True, but that also makes him a challenge to play with and use.

+1/+1 isn't going to really make or break Sten vs. Alistair/Loghain.

I prefer Sten anyways because of the 2H skills, as S/S to me is just a really, really lacking warrior setup in Origins and Awakening.  I usually just spec him to Champion at 14, I think it RPs with his status as a Sten (i.e. vanguard) of the Beresaad as well as being the obvious spec choice for accompanying Warriors/Rogues.  Even without the second spec he still deals a ton of damage.  The only thing that I think would be missing would be the Reaver talents Devour and Frightening Appearance, but he's already going to be such a good off-tank/tank/awesome when he gets 2H Sweep that missing out on the second spec isn't a terrible deal.  If you give him a half-decent setup (the best would be CGM/Starfang+BDA/Juggernaut/Cailan's) Sten just tears through dudes.

He fills a niche. He's a heavy hitter early in the game, and though he's quite fragile, I do tend to find certain 'early' levels easier if he's in the group - the Circle Tower and Redcliffe. Oghren may have the edge, but he's not really designed to be picked up until you're two thrids of the way through the game.

For the heavy tank position Sten does nicely, but he's overshadowed by Shale. Shale is stronger, has unique talents, and can stand up to a lot more heavy hitting. Sten is good, but he's weak in the beginning and goes down easy. It's best to use Alister until he gets built up, usually by the second Ally quest, but by that time Oghren/Alister/Shale are already being used, and it's easier, especially for me, to stay with a team once I pick them. So he's not bad, he's just overshadowed by the betters.

Sten is a good addition to a bad (anti-church) party eg. lets say you want to RP an elf.

He's been basically my only warrior in my current party and now that we're in mid-game he's quite fantastic in terms of melee damage. He does need to be nursed a bit early on. He's pretty funny in terms of interaction.

Sten is awesomeness. For some variety I put him away for awhile in favour of Zevran/Alistair pairing. I pulled him back out for awhile and he just went to town on several mercs/bandits with little prompting and not much baby sitting now we're at midlevels. Get him something big to swing around like a maul or huge battleaxe and he just cleave through the enemy.

Story-wise, I LOVE Sten. I always save Sten, and use him over 50% of the time in my party. Is he mechanically the best? No, but I don't play my game by spreadsheet either. Sten is the sort that is difficult to like, difficult to get to like you, and one of the most satisfying to have around role-play wise. He isn't an "easy" character, which, makes him infinitely valuable to the enjoyment of my game in a way that isn't superseded by simply by being able to use someone else because they are simply a "better fighter".

It was nice, for me anyway, to have someone question my leadership. Alistair was the senior member of the Grey Wardens yet did what I wanted. Morrigan could have turned me into a toad at any given point, but did what I wanted. It was nice to have someone push my buttons, question my decisions. Sten is easily my favorite regular companion because of the difficulties ( and therefore benefits story-wise) he brings to the tale. Many of my characters would have left on the ship with him, had they been able to. :)

I hesitate to suggest anyone do the "mechanically best thing" ( at least once!) because the stories the characters have can lead to SO much great story-telling experience. <3 Sten. And, spec him right and he is a beast, in the right group. A tank, he is not.

Also, if you have him in your group, what I do is NOT allow him to try to take aggro unless for whatever reason I NEED him too, in which case I flip to him and get him to do such myself.  He is a damage dealer and exceptionally enjoyable to watch as such. :)

I totally agree with shantisands. He has the best dialogue interventions. (I like Shale's too) I love that dialogue with the drunk Smith in Redcliff and the smugler next to Orzammar. As a Warden I would surelly count with his experience in combat.

Edit.: Regarding equipment on my last play I gave him the Effort Set and he did quite well.

On console Sten > Oghren simply because his stat points are not wasted.  Can wear dragon armor incredibly early on.

And hes more interesting, not quite as funny but more interesting.

For those of us on a Console, the fact that Sten is gotten so early is a major selling point. PC users can use whoever they want, and only need to download a respec mod to make a character usable. Those of us on Consoles, however, have to work with what we're given. For example, I'd love to run around with Zevran as my Rogue. However, Zevran has no Cunning and no Lockpicking skills, so he couldn't open a paper bag with a gaping hole in it. Leliana, on the other hand, won't shut up about the Maker, but every locked chest or door we come across is effectively open.

Sten may not have the second spec, but the amount of control that you have over his stats means that he can (and usually does) end up far better at what he does than Oghren could ever be.

Just finished my ultimate sacrifice run and even putting a few points in dex Sten had more than 15 str over Oghren. Partially because did Orz last, but its just how I like my play throughs, with Branka at full strength. That and the conversation.

I give Sten the Juggernaught armour and a ruined up battleaxe and set him to attack with Alistair...at this point though he's usually whiping his blade clean before anyone else can get an attack in. Sometimes I just hold everyone else back and watch him go.

And, like I said earlier, listening to his discussions with the rest of the party and getting him to open up about life in the Qun is really fascinating. That is why he is sheer awesomeness.

I completely agree.
