you dont have to tank but you'll be very good at it going sword and shield so you should tank. I am thinking of trying to do the same thing as what I think you are suggesting. I'd like to go sword and shield but try and go all out offensive. Due to the skill trees however I do not think this is viable, a 2 handed warrior will always do much more damage than sword and shield and sword and shield will have more defense.

If anyone has figured out a way to accomplish a more offensive sword and shield warrior I would be very grateful to hear what you think. I have always like sword and shield and I like that in this game you get to actually use the shield for attacks but I also like putting out a ton of damage so I guess you cant have the best of both worlds right?

All of the Sword & Shield specialties are there for tanking, to ensure you are the last one standing. So, short answer: no. You're more self-sufficient with Sword & Shield, but 2 handed Sword is the way you want to go for big damage.

Remember though... you only provide DPS when not dead.

Sword&Shield spec is not only effective in tanking, it's the only spec that can effectively tank a large group of mobs who may hit you from flank/behind without dying in seconds.

With all due respect, I beg to differ. I say for the big damage, 2h axe! Posted Image

I goofed off with 1h & shield in DA:J & it seems like the shield abilities to grant immunity to flanking, & it's upgrade to to grant immunity to flanking, crits, & backstabs are the only good abilities in the whole line. The rest stink compared to the other lines. (shamelessly biased opinion)

You have a party of 4 that means the biggest baddest tank you can build still means you have 3 folks to deal damage and one to be a sponge. I plan to build a Dwarf Noble with every shield skill maxed so his only option is to send to him into the fray with his beard on fire and see if the computer can kill him while I rain down damage with my other party members.

You'll never do the amount of melee damage as other builds. Now, you don't *have* to be a tank, but it's the role you'll excel at.

An interesting point but right now DA:J only encompasses about half of the talent trees for each weapon spec, so instead of 16 talents we are granted 8 for now. Now some might argue it wasn't the best 8 picked for every spec but it is what we have to work with.

Sword and Shield is poorly represented in DA:J and my 2handed Dwarven Noble seems to hold up just fine tanking with the 2 handed tree, I just make sure he has a nice set of armor with defense and con bonuses and I try to spread my points between STR and CON, sometimes I will throw one in Willpower or Dex though. Although for serious tanking I just slap a shield on Martine, like the battle with 2 ogres.

As far as I remember there maybe a few talents for sword&shield that boosts defense rating when wielding a shield. This is in addition to the ability to block backstabs.

So yes, shields give you a damage reduction bonus in addition to a chance to 100% block and the ability to block 100% backstabs.

Offcourse shields can also do damage in an offensive role.

You don't HAVE to be a tank, you can build yourself to do damage. You'll be best as a tank though, I think.

Bravery + Shield Pummel + Overpower + Assault + Shield Mastery are all related to doing more damage.

If you want to boost your damage even more bring along a mage to magic up your sword.

If you combine Shield Mastery with Assault and Overpower you can still do quite a bit of damage.

Weapon & shield style has only one of three rows dedicated to hitting stuff so you'll always have fewer ways to hurt the enemy (since every activated ability has a cooldown, sometimes quite a long one), and no AoE at all. If you want to be more DPS than protector, it's probably not a good choice.

@Korva

there are also the warrior specific activated talents. I think I will go a sword and shield character myself as the dual wield seems to hard to balance the strength/dex needed, as well as the fact that larger single handed weapons like swords don't benefit from all those points you pump into dex like the rogue does, argh too much to consider

Although the shield spec'd warrior won't ever meet the level of damage of a 2-handed spec, don't forget about specializations.

The Berserker specialization will add damage and health regeneration if I remember right. More Survivability + More Damage = good enough for me.
