But that's one of the things I was hoping might get discussed here; what elements from the many possible endings of ME3 could we probably predict and hope to see in the next game in the franchise?

Things like: Will the Citadel survive? What planets are still habitable? Which non-major chars would likely survive regardless and what part, if any, might they play in the next game?

I know there are a lot of very knowledgable people within this community and whilst the speculation on what could happen has myriad possiblities, there are some things I believe we can take for granted (ie the Reapers being defeated and the major races surviving, even if they do lose spacestations/planets along the way).

I personally think Anderson will play a pivotal role, assuming he survives whatever gets sent against the Citadel and I'm hoping for a Destiny Ascension 2 and maybe even a chance to serve aboard her!!

I do hope the next installment won't be in isolated places like in the Terminus systems. It would be nice if most of your missions were in the Citadel and in Illium. I loved the part in LotSB where you explored the heights of Illium.

Yeah, I liked that too. I'd love to see more flying/driving too, the chase sequence in LotSB was really unexpected and refreshing.

Although I also enjoy a good shooter, MMO, or RTS game, I hope any future Mass Effect games beyond the Shepard trilogy are also single player RPGs. I'd like to see them jump forward in the timeline a few hundred (or thousand) years with new enemies. Hopefully the Reaper threat is fully resolved in ME3, and by the time Shepard is done with them, dead and gone for good.

Personally this is what I'd like to see. In KOTOR 2 the game adapted ever so slightly to the choices you made in the original, even though the two games were made by completely different developers. I would love to see this implemented but in order to do it, any post Shepard story would have to take place LONG after the Reaper wars because the variability inherent with the ME series is great.

I would also like to see a DA:O style character creation. When I first played Mass Effect I was struck by the fact that I couldn't play as a Turian or Asari or Salarian. Though I've never played a game that allows you to do that (Nope, not DA:O) I would still love to see something like that in a future ME game.

After all, each species are people and not caricatures. It would make sense to see that happen.

I'd say it would have to use pretty much the same game mechanics, anything else wouldn't feel right and would upset more fans than it would please.

Personally, I would prefer it if it remained in the same timespan as the first 3. There are plenty of cases for it to be before or after but I think they'd be missing out on the connection to Shep and his/her actions if they set the follow up either before the Reapers or a long time after. A decade or so would fine but much more than that and the ties to the trilogy would fade IMO. Plus the fact that it's not set TOO far into the future is appealing. Humanity hasn't really changed in the ME Universe from how it is now and that's very appealing. It makes it easier to relate to than say Star Trek for example, where the time-gap is considerably larger.

Whatever they do, I think I'm done with the Reapers, I'm hoping for either a new big threat, or just having to deal with the more common and lower scale threats that are a part of the Galaxy at that time. Maybe having to try and clean up the Terminus system or something?

It is said that Dragon Age 2 will allow us to import a savegame from Origins, so our decisions in the first game will carry, to a certain degree....

So I don't think it's so farfetched If a new Mass effect allows us to do the same. That said at the end of ME2 Harbringer claims that they are our "salvation", so Shepard may stop the Reapers but that may lead to a bigger threat in the long run...

This is all speculation on my part, of course. Hard to say something until we get our answers in ME3... ^^

100 % agree with this. I see this everywhere, DA fans want Mass Effect to be more like DA and vice versa. I have never played DA but I pre-ordered DA2 to try it out and I've been discussing in other threads that I'm hoping it's like Mass Effect but then, I know that's not going to happen because DA and ME are two diferent games. Both of which have solid fan bases who already like the current interface and gameplay. Personally, I liked the whole 'Shepard' concept instead of the whole completely choose your race option because it was easier to for the developers to create a story that would affect the protagonist in a substantial depth while giving players the option to create their own versions of Shepard.

I really hope that the timeline won't be too far off from the trilogy because somehow everything still has to be connected. It would be disappointing after all the time and effort we put into the trilogy, the next installment just gives us a random NPC historian who says "Commander Shepard was one of the greatest heroes in the galaxy" as a reference and that's it. Maybe not a smaller threat but what if after the whole Reaper debacle, Humanity takes the role of the villain wherein they've let the victory over the reapers boost their ego or something.
