Good evening,
My name is Martin, I am from the Czech Republic and I am fifteen
years old, so I better apologize for my english now. I am writing here
because I have one question. Why are you canceling all translations
of your games in Czech Republic and in Hungary? It started with Dragon Age 2, Ok, I
could handle it, but now... MASS EFFECT 3? I have
bought Mass Effect and Collector's Editions of Mass Effect 2 and Dragon
Age: Origins and that was the best way how I can spent my money. I love
games of Bioware, really a lot. So why don't we deserve translation? You despise
of Europe? Or just Czech Republic? Are we second rate, or what? I don't think, that this message can
do something, but I just want to tell you, that you are broking my
heart...

P.S.: I know I posted this topic at wrong section, but I don't where I should post it.

Won't the German translation suffice? I was under the impression that Czech is similar to German. Or is it Russian that it's influenced by so much?

Czech language is very similar to slovak language. Actualy we understand each other without problems, so as smaller country we have here also czech version of game. And that always meant czech subtitles and english/original dubbing. So I am again very dissapointed with Bioware...or should I say EA? probably its them... First they lied to us about "technical difficulties" of LotSB and that was supposed to be reason why it wasnt available in our country..later truth came out that it was only about localisation. And now this...
I can understand english, but with czech subtitles I can enjoy game more. Much more

I dont know how big the gaming market is in Czech republic and Slovakia, but if market penetration is not good and sales of previous translated works did not recover the cost of the translation, then EA corp may have washed their hands of the issue.



Localizations, i think, are always done by EA localization teams and not Bioware specific.

Yes I can speak and understand english quite good, but that is about principle, every other distributor in czech republic does translations because they care about their customers, but what is EA doing? Is EA signing that we don't worth for the translation? I really don't know why. Dragon Age and Mass Effect were the most selling games in history I think. Our sale/game market (I don't know how to say it) is good for European stance (and for our size). Before Dragon Age 2 every game from EA was translated. And there's one thing too...Mass Effect and even Mass Effect 2 were translated and EVERY RPG gamer in Czech republic is now waiting for the end of the saga.

I never played any video game on Croatian subtitles and I never complained.

Well except for Serious Sam since it was made by Croats and I don't get it why they never put Croatian subtitles.

Croatia sucks.  I bought a pair of jeans that were made there.  They fit all wrong!  Work on it!

Depends. If you're comfortable with English, you better take the english version. Same with films, books or tv shows.

I can only speak about German localisations, but they are quite the horror show in all too many cases. Starts out with the unversal "you" in English, which doesn't exist in German. So the first mixups are a given when adressing a person.

Overall, I doubt there will be a definitive answer about the issue on this forum. I doubt the Bioware devs know, and I doubt EA Corp will read this, let alone post here.

I doubt it will work, since companies usually dont release information unless it is in an official press release, but they would know more then we do here.

A few DA:O DLCs and Lair of the Shadow Broker wasn't translated (LotSB isn't even compatible with the localised versions), so the lack of it in the future wasn't a surprise.

The patterns were all there, buried in the data.

Maybe Bioware/EA didnt sell enough copies of ME2 in R. Czech to support a Czech translation... it sucks, but learning english is a must nowadays anyway...

abaris: I understand you, but I just feel fine when I can read/play something in czech. My opinion is that we should support our languages and nations, I don't want to live in world where will be one language which will going to be simpler and simpler like in Orwell's 1984. If that will happend then we will lose our identity...

Trust me, the game market in Czech republic is one of the best in middle Europe. Mass Effect is selling even now...Mass Effect has big community here, we are nation of gamers.

well no problem bro, you speak pretty good english right? So why worry? Use english subtitles. If your english is not that good, well do some free study. When ME 3 is here, you can play it with no worries and your english is way better. Two birds with one stone right?

Yes, but Soviet Union didn't tried, it succeded, not with the language but soviets and communist "broke our spine".

Man, I can sympathize with trying to watch something in a second language. English is my first, and I'm mostly fluent in SPanish, but when I watch SPanish films without subtitles it's a constant struggle since I have to actively translate every line into English in my head while I watch. It can get tiresome.



THere's also the problem of speed of language. I don't know how much speeds differ between Czech and English, but the speed of Spanish speakers is the last true barrier for me having a complete ability to listen to and speak SPanish.

I agree with you almost completely and sympathize with you, but I honestly think the 1984 comparison is a bit extreme. It's not like EA is trying to make the entire world uniform English, and if they were, a lot more translations would have been cut.
