So, of all the asari in-game who aren't in relationships with other asari, are with males of other species. Except Morinth. Whose erstwhile girlfriend is seduced with the aid of drugs, mindraped, and killed. And she seemed underage as well.

Considering she already murders people for sport and out of a sense of self empowerment, I think her being a 'pedophile' only adds some sugar to the cake.

No, I imagine Morinth is pansexual like every other asari (plus, Nef is definitely post-pubescent, which puts her out of the "pedo" range) But that aside, it seems... shall we say, peculiar that the one asari/woman relationship we see in the games only exists to motivate us to kill one of the participants.

I never took Nef to be underage (I would guess she was in her early twenties) but I don't think that detracts from the point made by the OP.

But... Femshep can have a wholesome and beautiful romance with Liara. On the one hand, I wonder if it's part of an effort to not place homosexual content in front of anyone's faces who doesn't want to see it, which is... understandable, until they do something like this.

That said, I am going to start introducing myself to people as "kinda like a sex Highlander" and see how that works out. I would hasten to point out, though, that a FemShep can have a healthy lesbasari relationship, so there's that at least. The problem really is that Asari are basically just sex objects as a race. They are the kind of alien race only a very lonely nerd would ever dream up. (I do like the Asari, don't get me wrong, but the concept is silly to me)

The depraved bisexual trope is alive and well. Heck it even shows up in places where you'd think people would know better, like on The L Word. Liara is pretty one exception to this rule in ME but how much of this is a side effect of the ManShep/Liara relationship?

That wasn't quite my point (check my sig, I actually rather like Morinth). It's the fact that the only asari/woman romance in the game outside the main character was set up to make you want to kill one of the participants. The whole thing serves as a means of vilification, especially when you consider that it's the first asari Nef's been attracted to, and very possibly the first female (given her comment about Morinth being a girl like her).

Yes...the FemShep/Liara romance content is 100% optional and people don't have to see an asari and a female in a happy normal relationship if they don't want to.

I've never saved Morinth, so I'm not sure if her dialogue says to the contrary, but from what is gathered from other conversations about her she's more interested in "hunting" and a lifestyle. Drugging an underage, naive girl doesn't seem like it'd be interesting. While Nef certainly comes off as easy prey, I'm sure the drugs had more to do with Morinth getting her own kicks then her needing them.
I never thought Nef was underage tho (to OUR standards, remember).
As far as the other asari we observe all being with males: I wonder if the flak Bioware got from the Liara relationship in ME from pols played a part.

I did read your OP a little more closely and made some edits to my first reply. I did notice the "and she's a girl like me" line too.. but I think it's just that Morinth is not a very good example. She preys on people, she's a literal sexual predator, and Asari are known for ther sexiness to all races and genders, so... Nef, straight or gay or whatever, just didn't stand a chance. Naivety and youth were her only crimes.

It just stands out, I think, because I would agree there are not any healthy lesbian Asari relationships on display in either game, save a femShep romancing Liara.

Come to think of it, none of the asari/asari relationships have ended well either. Benezia and Aethyta broke up in some tragic manner, Erinya's bondmate was killed (not to mention their daughters), and Samara... well, her reproductive history needs no introduction.

Yes, and none of these pairings are actually seen in the game, but merely mentioned in dialog.

The Benezia/Aethyta one is especially absent as it's only vaguely hinted at, and you need LotSB to connect the final dots.

And Erinya is depicted as an irrational xenophobe...

Well, I think that's why Asari/Asari relationships are so taboo, at least that was the impression I got in ME2. It's sort of the Asari equivalent of "being gay", insofar as that it can have negative social repurcussions and is considered "unnatural" even though it's not... in the case of ******/bi-sexuality, that's been around as long as people have, and in the case of the Asari... yeah, it never made much sense. I mean, that's a pretty stupid evolutionary adaptation.

Especially since they've freaking initially evolved that w--wait, my mistake, there's no possible way the asari evolved naturally. But I can't imagine whoever engineered them having added a clause that they should dislike the idea of mating with one another...
