Kasumi and the Greybox

I've been trying to decide what to do with this - the "obvious" Paragon option is to let Kasumi keep the box.  The other one for 5 Paragon and 2 Renegade points is to destroy the greybox for her.

Some have argued that letting Kasumi keep the lockbox was a poor choice because:

1.  It went against the wishes of a dying man,
2.  Kasumi would be hunted down for the greybox,
3.  Kasumi would be stuck in the past and stuck in a virtual reality world, and
4.  Information harmful to the Alliance may be leaked.

I was thinking about this, and I thought about it this way:

1.  I'm friends with Kasumi, not some dead guy in a greybox.  Kasumi's wishes as my friend trumps the wish of a boyfriend trying to be protective that I never met;
2.  Wouldn't people hunt Kasumi down for the greybox either way?  The last the greybox is seen, potentially on security footage, Kasumi has it in her posession.  No one would know that she destroyed it because she doesn't do that until she is alone with Shepard.  Also even if she said she destroyed it, who would believe her?  She could still be captured and tortured/killed over the greybox since she is the last known person in posession of it...
3.  I have photos/videos of some exes.  I might have looked at them for a while after a bad breakup but I eventually moved on.  I didn't get the impression Kasumi would just throw herself into the lockbox, never to emerge... I just got the impression he meant a lot to her and she wanted those memories.  It's not my choice to make her destroy them - it's something she'll need to come to realize herself.
4.  The only reason I wish I either destroyed or kept the info for myself.  But, i figured if Kasumi was able to figure out what the information was, and it was important enough, I'd assume she'd find a way to get the vital info to Shepard.  If random NPCs can find out how to contact Shep, I'm sure Kasumi could...

What did other people think about the situation as it pertains to Kasumi?

Greybox.

:D

Edit: and I agree with similar reasoning, leaning towards keeping it.

I let her keep it. My reasoning was not really all that different from your own. The way I saw it was:

She's my squadmate and friend. I let my squadmates do what they need to in their loyalties. In Mordin's, I let him talk himself through everything and didn't try to sway him any way. It was a very grey decision and in the end, as long as my squadmates are at peace with what they did, they in my opinion will perform at their best. Kasumi, to me, understood the implications of keeping the box and was ready for them. When we lose a loved one, many people keep memorabilia of them. I can say with full confidence that if something every happened to my fiance, I'd want to keep something of his with me to always remember him by, so to speak. Who am I to tell her not to? Besides, like you said, Shepard knows her, not her boyfriend.

Good to hear I was not the only one - also now that I think about it, if Kasumi cracked the code, even if she destroyed the greybox she would STILL need to be a loose end that would need to either be silenced or captured to learn what it had.

Kasumi has a greybox herself though. Her memories of Keiji will not decay, and though she is likely to be captured either way, if she does have it in her possession, it will be all the more incentive to split her skull open. Otherwise, with it destroyed, her skills may be enough to negotiate a deal instead.

On a more personal reason, with the actual evidence that could cause a rift in uniting the galaxy destroyed, less likely to cause disruption for races cooperating with Alliance.

Any other time I'd be in complete agreement with you.

I always destroy it for her. She has her own memories of Keiji, she doesn't need his.

Kasumi is a big girl, and she can take care of her own emotional needs. My Shepard wouldn't take it upon himself to decide what Kasumi needs to do with her memories of Keiji. What makes this an interesting decision for me is the predicament of destroying information (information is power) and having a keen desire to protect the Systems Alliance and humanity in general on the galactic scale. I wish we had a better idea of just what it was Keiji discovered--it was something tying the Alliance to the Reapers, but what? My hopes for resolution in ME3 are slim, considering how they treated BDtS from ME1 in ME2.

I let her keep the box.

1. I really like her and want to see her happy.

2. If Alliance has dark secrets of such significance that may destroy it, it means that Alliance has done something really horrible and thus is no better than Cerberus. And I won't help terrorists(war criminals, whatever else they may be) to keep the secret hidden.

I destroyed the box for her. It made me feel like a heel, but Kenji was right. The box makes Kasumi a target and keeping it might put her in danger. Besides, Kasumi needs to move in. Holding on to a dead loved one is not exactly healthy.

Wouldn't Kasumi be a target either way? Why would anyone involved believe the grey box was destroyed. Just the fact it was in her hands last puts her in danger

The box can't make her a target if she isn't doing anything besides helping Shepard.

I let her keep it in hopes there will be a reason to have her in ME3.

That and to see Jacob get a little "Sweet & Sour" action.

IMO, it's better to keep something you don't need than to need something you discarded

I always let her keep it. One, because she's awesome and one my favorite characters and two, because I want to know what Kenji found out about the Alliance. Any information is useful information.

I always keep the Greybox for metagaming purposes (sort of, because Shepard might have seen it him/herself) since there's obviously a picture of a Reaper that pops up in Keiji's memories. Which most likely means the Alliance knows something about the Reapers it doesn't want others to know about and the Greybox may help uncover/expose that.

Same, for same reasonings. If she doesn't move on she'll never really heal, and keeping these video clips of memories that she herself will always have with her anyways would be akin to her latching to a tree and sticking around rather than movin' on down the road.

As for the point about Kasumi still being a target whether you destroy it or not, I though that (and I could be wrong since it's been awhile since I've played the mission) if you destroyed the greybox then Kasumi left it somewhere it was sure to be found, and so those who're after it learned the info was gone?

As for the information itself, well...the ME Wiki says that when Keiji mentions this info, the first thing we see is a Reaper. And this info implicates the Alliance. Does this mean the Alliance is working with the Reapers? Maybe. Or maybe they were accessing info behind the scenes that they shouldn't have been? Maybe they really do believe Shepard's claims of the Reapers coming, but until they can get evidence or proof they're publicly following the Citadel like mindless sheep for the sake of the people's peace of mind.

I doubt the Council races would like the humans digging in their info...but at this point all it is is subjection. All we can do is make the decision we think is the right one and deal with the consequences as they come.
