The download went fine. I can select the program and get to the initial startup screen, but the moment I select Play, I get the following message:
___
Mass Effect Configuration Utility has stopped working
A Problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
___
It's on a Win7 machine, so yes, I ran it in compatability mode for vista and XP, and I continue to experience this problem.
Any advice?
Just downloaded ME1, can't get it started.

Also, try to run the game directly from the executable called "MassEffect" from the folder where you installed it. If that doesn't work, post your PC specs.

Hi Folks, could I have some assistance as well? I am having the exact same problem. Downloaded and installed the latest patch, restarted and tried launching from the executable but still no go with ME1. I downloaded it from the EA store. I tried the EA support but they said ME1 is not compatible with win7. Have others been successful with Win7?
ETA: NM, got it to work, yay!

While there have been minor hiccups with ME1 and Windows 7 there are not enough occourences where windows 7 is to blame to say the game is incompatible. It just doesn't support Windows 7 officially.
That said until people start posting a proper report form with hardware specs and more information on the problem you are having with any crash reports and on screen messeges then nobody will have much to say.
Everyone needs to be taken on a case by case basis so just saying "i have the same problem" doesn't help us or you,

While looking for a recent iteration of the "Failed to compile global shaders" symptom of an elderly video card, I saw these "Me, too!" bad excuses for problem reports, and I refer the authors of those comments without useful data in them to this link:
social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/131/index/2012975
Added Note: just in case of a new arrival who will use the archives with a professional Search engine and a site: redirector criteria, and ends up looking at my reponse here, ME1 had a filtering mechanism built into it that tested for the full SM3 pixel shader functionality. The install would allow cards with partial functionality to work during the game's install to the hard drive, and only after that, noticed that the X700, X800, and X850 High End 2005 generation Radeons only had half of the pixel shader capability (Dx9.0"b").
It does not appear that ME2 filters such cards in the same manner, however.
