Any tips on how to use a ranged Shale effectively.....in a party with no archers?

Im creating a new game. I plan on having Allistair tank, PC on DPS (2 handed warrior), Wynne healing, and Shale.
Since I usually use Shale for DPS with Pulverising Blows, I decided I want to try the Rock Mastery talents for once.

Sounds like you'll be controlling Shale alot in order to aim rocks unless there is way to set tactics for Shale.

Don't take all the rock tree first... there is a bug that can make 'Barrage' un-cast-able if you do.

Play on Normal Difficulty, and it shouldnt be a problem.
Im using Shale with 3 Mage in a game now, Rock Mastery and Stone Aura. Awesome with earth mages stacking earthquake....
