They've actually got a lot of plot hooks in place to get rid of a lot of ME2 companions. I can't go into details because this is a no spoiler section but even if you romanced a number of characters they could easily be sidelined if not removed altogether.

Personally I'd certainly like to see some from ME1 and 2 come through but not all. One or two new companions would be nice and even better if they were tied in from the books.

I personally think this is the issue that makes or breaks mass effect as a series, another me2 cop out in regards to squadmembers would diminish me3 and a lot of peoples overall opinon of mass effect as a trilogy.

If Bioware really planned the whole thing out from the start then there should be no problem then we should see that realised in me3 otherwise what we got was 3 games set in the same universe with small interconnecting story's.

Its actually not that hard to do either, make the default game for me3 an everyone survives and everyone is a potential squadmate then make the consequences of the suicide mission or how someone played me2 affect their playthrough and their playthrough only. So if you got everyone killed then so be it, you get a substantially smaller squad than someone who got everyone out alive (consequence of your actions).

Or did we spend a whole game recuiting and gaining loyalty of a squad, then fought through a suicide mission and managed to either succeed with no losses or with some losses only to find that none of it really mattered and we aren't responsible for who leaves or who stays anyway?

And on one last note, I would happily kill Samara in the SM if it meant I could replace her with the Krogasari bartender from Illium.  Who very well may have been my favorite character from Mass Effect 2.

The minute I talked to her I wanted her on my team. I agree, she was probably my favorite character from ME2's NPCs, tying with Mordin. Very well done.

Every time I need a laugh I go back to her. Garrus and Mordin are occasionally funny (Mordin in particular), but while their humor is false bravado and dry wit, the Krogasari gal was much more vibrant.

I couldn't breathe for a while after the whole "...laughed the blue off my ass" line passed.

That could get awkward. Especially for a Liara-romancing Shepard.

Pssh.  She blew me off to pursue her career as an information broker.  Krogasari > Liara.  Bring her back in ME3, dammit!

If they introduce a mostly new crew, I hope they give you a chance before the big battle at the end to get the band back together and you can have a chance to use some of your favorites for one last time.

I don't count Miranda with them because she's loyal to Cerberus and Cerberus only (read her LM, you gain her respect - not her loyalty).

Hello McFly, anybody home?! Miranda can resign if you blew up the Collector base.

Can =/= Will.

Plus, she's not the type to stick around if you're not doing what she's doing. Even her romance plays out more like a battle of wills than a social convention. So, even if she did resign from Cerberus, what's she staying on the Normandy for? Her playboy Shepard? Nah.

I wouldn't doubt meeting her again in ME3, but I don't see any reason why she'd stick around after the SM.

I'm betting this more than spending the time to fully flesh out ALL of the old and new squaddies.

Like it was mentioned earlier - almost every one of the ME2 squaddies has an excuse to leave. Most of their recruitment was temporary. Samara, Than, Saieed, Miranda... All have explicitly stated that they're onboard simply for the mission, or have plans after.

Jack, Tali, and Grunt all have a tenuous spot, but the strongest thing keeping them in the running is that two of them are LI's - which BioWare has had no trouble dealing with in the past.

The only one I can really see sticking around is Garrus. He doesn't have anywhere to go, and he was doing what Shepard would be doing anyways.

I just expect that for all the squaddies who left, they'll be integral to the ME3 plot or major missions at some point. Maybe everybody survived, but Miranda hates you - so you have to fight through her to get to TIM, for instance. Maybe you were too Renegade and Samara hunts you down.

It gives the authors a lot of options, but whether or not the options evoke the level of depth you expect is unknown.

Meh, in any case... I'd trade one random party member from ME2 for the Big Ben Guy... I mean... Sheploo with Garrus and Ben in the party... Ultimate bro combo.
