I don't care what anyone says. That half assed little breakup speech he gives to the female warden is just so callous and heartless and full of nonsense.

There was absolutely NO reason to dump her. I mean, she basically becomes a noblewoman in every sense of the word in Awakening so there is just NO reason they can't be together, NO excuse for this horrid, shoddy bit of writing.

Totally and utterly broke Alistair's character and destroyed the entire romance. First and last time I ever pursue it. It sucks. It's horrible.

Might as well have flashed a message across my screen saying, "Thou Hath Wasted Thy F*cking Time". What a ripoff.

Now I'm off to the much more elf humane Oblivion universe with my sweet Zev. (at least HE'S a good guy). I need a long, long vacation to Crucible.

I suppose you have played/finished DA:O for the first time by now? Okay then let me say it with David Gaider's (who wrote Alistair but also Morrigan, Shale and Zevran) words:

Posted Image

He'll absorb your rage and fill it in little vials to cackle at the fact that you fell for his evil trap. Writers are like that after all. xD As for the rest, there are workarounds, which is why I was....wait...there is such a scene O__o as I heard from it. I never have seen it myself in my playthroughs tbh, if it wasn't for testing it.

Also this belongs in the spoiler forum.

Sure, as if making my boyfriend screw a swamp skank in order to get a good ending wasn't bad enough.

Lol, just imagine him putting duty over your PC when she's so much more important than Ferelden. What a bastard. ^_^ Oh, and you know that's a massive spoiler and shouldn't be in this part of the forum, right? Then there's the fact that it doesn't have to end like that, but hey, might as well write the whole thing off.

SPOILER:

The only time Alistair won't break up with you is if you're a human noble. If you're not a noble he feels that the Ferelden nobility wouldn't except you as queen because they barely except him as king. But if you are a noble, then when he's made king he will marry and not break up with you.

No. If you keep him off the throne, then he won't break up with you. He'll only do so if you make him king and you're not a noble.

@OP Been there. It sucks! My condolences. Yes, I agree that *the scene* and the following scene when you try to discuss WTF just happened were a huge letdown. I mean Alistair goes on and on about his feelings for half the game and then in the end just -- clams up? Arrrgh!

CE Warden: I'll show YOU "too painful," Mister "I'm a lucky man"!

Anyway, the whole set up was well done because it really was gut wrenching. And if you're not too soured on him it *is* possible to make things work out. (SPOILERS)

Zev is the better choice for anyone other than a Cousland.

There are ways to keep Alistair with you, even if you put him on the throne and are not a Cousland. My main character is a human mage and managed to stay by his side, despite him being king and married to Anora, in my ending. It was a fair bit of balance between the needs of Ferelden and my character's will. It's possible. It's just hard.

You need to harden his personality through his sister's side quest and manage to convince Anora before the Landsmeet, in case you want them to get married (for Ferelden and all that jazz). Then, after the Landsmeet, when he approaches with the breakup dialogue, you must convince him to stay with you, despite everything.

There are many, many ways the Alistair romance can go horribly wrong. I was simply lucky enough never to have met that path.

I thought the breakup was perfectly in character.

And hey, he didn't want to be king. You made him king. And suddenly *you* are the one who gets to whine about things not turning out the way you wanted?

Apparently ...my Dalish Warden isn't impressed with that opinion.:whistle:If you want to separate them you have Alistair to pry out of her cold, dead hands, mind you.

At any rate, I love that opinon which has become kind of fanon rule. But more I love to take it and turn it around and pair all my FWarden BUT a Cousland with Alistair. Tis more fun this way :P

I don't care about being queen. Being a bedchamber **** suits my warden fine. But why does Alistair not automatically go with the mistress thing to begin with an insists on permenently ending it?

And at the end of Origins why couldn't they have reconciled or something after all the stress with the big demon fight is done?

And besides she does become a noble in Awakening... so why couldn't they get back together at some point when **** has calmed down with the apocalyptic monsters and such?

No it wasn't. Breaking up with her in front of a room full of people was completely disgusting and inappropriate.

And the way he's basically just "Well thanks for the puntang, by by now you worthless peasant ****! I'm too high and shiny for you now" and turns his back and walks out on you without another word.... that was just not the guy I knew. Icicles speared through my character's heart.

And even you still have to make him put the digs on Morrigan. Oh sweet jesus hell. Psychological trauma +10000.

Of course then I just use a cheat item to temporarily turn into a male and take on the form of a skeleton monster. Then she unwittingly bones ME in the form of a bunch of literal bones. "Yep, take THIS "boner", vile woman!" my warden says. Revenge is too sweet.

In my first play through, I loved Alistair.  I thought his romance was super-sweet, refreshing, and very heart warming.  It was surprising to have a character like him.  He was (and still is, just a bit less so) my favorite character, despite the occasional stupidity and spinelessness.

However, when I stumbled across the dumping scene, post-Landmeet, that was the catalyst to lose all respect for his character.  I know he was approaching it the only way he knew how, but it does stick true to his, let's call it, buffoon side (not to mention the horrible timing).  What is most insensitive, is to do it right on the eve of battle.  That was the most foolish thing he does all game.

After seeing that, I can't not harden Alistair in any play through.  It helps him to develop a spine, and if he is to be put on a throne, with Anora or not, something has to be done to make him a decent ruler.

So, unless you are playing a HFN with very high persuasion, and an ambition to be on the throne, romance Alistair  Other than that, stay far away, and go after Leli or Zev.  Their romances, imo, are much cuter, anyway.

Edit: After watchig that break-up, it makes it easier to kill Alistair off, or make him sleep with Morrigan >:)

If he's unhardened, Alistair believes that taking you as a mistress will be unfair on his future wife. He's thinking of the feelings of the person he'll eventually marry, not just you. Regardless of what *you* want, he doesn't want to hurt his future wife.

Personally I think that's very decent of him.

And at the end of Origins why couldn't they have reconciled or something after all the stress with the big demon fight is done?

Maybe they do in the future. But if you mean reconcile = have make-up sex, unhardened king Alistair makes it clear he'll never go down that road because he's afraid it might mean he'll never be able to tear himself away from the PC. He's avoiding temptation, and I can only respect that. If you feel differently, replay the game and harden him. He'll happily bone the PC no matter what his future wife's feelings on the subject.

And besides she does become a noble in Awakening... so why couldn't they get back together at some point when **** has calmed down with the apocalyptic monsters and such?

See above.

It might come as a surprise that not all guys are willing to sleep with more than one partner. Unhardened Alistair is one of those guys.

So go back and harden him, or appreciate the fact he's doing what he believes is fair.
