I thought the breakup was perfectly in character.
And hey, he didn't want to be king. You made him king. And suddenly *you* are the one who gets to whine about things not turning out the way you wanted?
Very true. He does spend much of the game saying he doesn't want choice A. But during certain events he says something else in fairly strong terms ("Choice B is not acceptable"). If during that event he had stuck to "not me, please" or warned the Warden at Eamon's what the outcome would be I think players whould have felt less shellshocked.
At Eamons:
Warden: Anora and I have worked out a plan.
Alistair: What?! What about ... you know?
Warden: It'll be fine.
Alistair: Oh, all right. (Warden thinks things are settled, silly her!)
At event:
Warden: What do you think I should do?
Alistair: Me, me, oo, me!
Warden: Okey dokey.
Alistair: ...I've just realized this isn't going to work.
Warden: Could you have told me this an HOUR AGO?!
Alistair: No, and I refuse to talk about it now. Or ever. But my approval is still at 100 and I'll behave pretty much as if nothing ever happened. ...Until I get a chance to really destroy your emotional well-being later.
Warden: Arrrgh!
Breaking up is definitely in character for him (he is a slave to duty after all), but a little more strenuous arguing beforehand, fewer mixed signals during, or a little more lengthy wrap up after would have been nice. (But hey, that's what fanfic is for.)
I knew the pit was there and cheated to avoid it the first playthrough but tried falling in on a subsequent playthrough and it was pretty brutal. So I can totally empathize with people who are upset about it. Whether being upset is logical or justified or fair is beside the point, IMO.
