Most definitely a symbol. I'd just enjoy using that symbol for cooperative purposes.
I think that's admirable.
I see things as similar to the beginning of WW2, where Great Britain pretty much stood on its own. They did not turn the tide of battle and win out in the end all by themselves, but they held out, alone, against a siege of epic proportions for a long time until a true coalition came together that would eventually prevail.
Nothing would please me more than to see humanity brought together in its common defense and hold out against the invasion to unite with the rest of the races and push the Reapers out of the galaxy as one and for all.

Carl Sagan makes the point that optimum decision-making requires the opening move to be Paragon (coop) and continue coop until the other player decides to screw you over, in which case you reciprocate (i.e. compete, which is what renegades advocate). Carl was never an advocate of cooperation when the other player refuses to cooperate in good faith.ACC3SS wrote...

Carl Sagan was also a scientist who belived in the scientific basis of inter-human relations based on games theory. He used mathematics to demonstrate that in our interaction, one good turn deserves another, while wrong turns should be reciprocated. No"presenting the other cheek"...
This seems out of context. What does this have to do with patriotism or humanism?
The point being, humanity has the right to cooperate or compete with other species in order to ensure its survival. Carl Sagan never considered competition as moral or immoral. It is simply a logical response to another species stance. If the Turians want to compete, we must compete as a species.

Therefore, I find it prudent, and Carl Sagan would agree, for Humanity to respond in kind to threats to its survival, and show appropriate competitiveness to ensure its survival. A show of unity in this purpose is only healthy IMO. Wether you consider yourself paragon or renagade, cooperative or competitive, Carl advocates the balanced outlook as the winning strategy. A strategy that, had it been applied before the onset of the Cold War, would have made a more productive use of available resources. If only it worked like that. Most are slaves to the perception of power. Being the first to show good will is a weakness in their eyes. The Cold War is a textbook example. I suspect galactic politics (in Mass Effect) would differ little.Flamewielder wrote...
If other species show goodwill, great, let the paragons sort it out; if they only look out for number one, fine, let the renegades work them over...

Humans got a favorable draw when the asari and salarians told the turians to back down; it wasn't a self-earned victory. In the First Contact War humanity took on what was then the most powerful military force the Council races have to offer and came out with a victory before the turians had a chance to figure out what they were dealing with.
Against Sovereign... sort of, yes, but I think it was Shepard killing Sovereign's avatar that really did it. And Shepard is far from a representative of baseline humanity, especially after the Lazarus Project.
True but the fact that an upstart race even pulled off a draw against the Councils most powerful military force speaks volumes about the potential of humanity.
Yeah, it was Shepard who enabled the Aliance flotilla to take down Sovereign but again that speaks to the potential of humanity... or at least one human.
As for Shepard being something less than human because of the Lazarus Project, I disagree. Sheps body may be largely artificial or whatever but I think his/her character, personality and 'humanity' is still intact.
Shepard might not "focus test" right for Alliance recruitment ads any more but s/he is probably what many if not most humans should strive to be like.

Keep in mind that in the ME universe, nation states still exist on Earth, with all the associated political infighting. Uniting these nation-states against the Reapers is not only necessary for our survival as a species, but a more unified system of government may emerge from the ruins. I would hope that this new unified government would take Carl's idea to heart...

Do you think that making comparisons radical or stupid, you grow your views or your comment ? No, I reassure you, that is exaggerated is insignificant.
I think rather you focus on topic to say anything, you should post positively topics that interest you. It will avoid trolling.
Or try to be constructive next time, thank you.
