Well... of course to some extent there is a workaround for that issue if you are a vanguard... that being if there are other enemies around, you can 'charge' at them and you should come free. Using the example you've given, besides the 2 FENRIS Mechs (the dog ones) there is usually 2 LOKI mechs with them, so you could in theory wait for the charge to cooldown and charge at one of them to get out of the spot
I've found the FENRIS and Varren to be annoying to charge at anyway because a fair few of the time they end up getting stuck right at your feet rather than punted a bit back in front of you to get a good lock on, so I tend to get my squadmates to deal with those whilst I go charge something else. Either that or shoot at them from mid-low range with shotty just enough to give them a tiny bit of stagger and enable you to kill them before they get within biting/blasting distance
More on topic, am currently doing my MaleShep Vanguard playthrough and not once got stuck in the air from a charge, though I have heard others reporting it. Just finished LotSB with him, Vanguard vs a certain mini-boss and then also Shadow Broker himself is just downright awesome (specially the former due to what class they are

). I would highly recommend you try Vanguard again sometime and just remember not to charge varren or FENRIS mechs, it's worth it just for that mini-boss fight
