I wasn't so keen on Jade Empire. The controls for combat are stiff as hell. You can only perform a single attack, It';s very repetative in that aspect. And the last boss is pathetic. The story is decent enough but the side quests are really half assed.

A lot of people like it though so i guess it can't suck that much. I guess on the X Box it didn';t have much competition so was good. I played on PC so i guess i had already played much better games.

It's not a matter of lack of competition. That's an incredibly patronising remark to make about Xbox owners. The game was designed for the Xbox controller, which is why it controls so badly on mouse and keyboard. If one is to play it on PC, it is necessary to invest in a controller.

I have yet to play an RPG as atmospheric and engrossing as Jade Empire, even considering its brevity.

As for bad games, I find BG (I & II) incredibly dull, even compared to games of similar vintage. I keep trying to play them and keep abandoning the project after an hour at most.

I doubt a controller will make a difference to how slow and stiff the response times are on the game. Every attack seems to move in slow motion.

And lack of competition means everything, X Box gamers had nothing to compare it to. So they found it really good. I think the game had lots of good ideas but not enough execution of ideas to make a real impact on the game. It's funny because i found myself really wanting to enjoy the game but was just left with the impression of it being really mediocre. Not Bioware at their best by a long shot.

No, it means nothing. I had a PC at the time as well as my Xbox and I still found it to be an incredible game.

The response times sound like some sort of computer problem to me, because the game was never like that when I played on PC or on Xbox.

Evidently you are biased and refuse to see the slowness :P

It certainly not a computer problem i can assure you.

Speed in Jade Empire is tied to the style. Were you perhaps using White Demon?

I had one "eh, it was alright" play of Jade Empire. On the XBOX at the time (haven't tried the PC version but, honestly, I don't want to play it again so..)

I did try to replay the game twice over the years and never got much farther than the first hub. There is so much about that game that is designed to bore me, unfortunately.

I loved "Jade Empire". Naturally you are entitled to your opinion, Moondoggie. Certainly most people would say I was in the wrong to dislike "Mass Effect". They can tell me that until I am in blue in the face. It does not make my dislike of it any less true.

The only thing I will disagree on is performing a single attack. Most people who play "Jade Empire" do so this way, but it is entirely possible to switch styles in mid combo to create longer chains. One of the most fun aspects of JE combat to me was figuring out which styles worked best with other styles so I could really pummel the opposition. Other than that it is all subjective. Although I will agree playing with Duncan on playing with a controller. I tried the PC version recently with a keyboard and mouse, and it was horrid. I decided to shelve it until I get a 360 pad.

Freedoms or opinion and speach are what makes the western world so great :D

I'm not saying anyone who likes the game is wrong i just have my own reasons to dislike it. I've always been far more comfortable playing with keyboard and mouse on PC it's just natural to me i leave controllers for playing on consoles.

Freedom and opinions are purely Western phenomena now?

I hear that. I prefer an arcade stick when playing fighting games, pads for action games, and keyboard/mouse for just about everything else. When I first played "Jade Empire" it was on an Xbox. I bought the PC version years later so I could easily access the game without fiddling with a console. Playing that game with a keyboard/mouse combination is a bigger challenge to overcome than the game itself. If you ever try it again, buy or borrow a pad. It makes all the difference. :pinched:

Apologies, I was teasing. I sometimes forget that text doesn't convey that very well.

I'm the sort of person who gets teary-eyed reading this

"I want not less class but more class. In Who's Who, which is published yearly, there are listed 28,000 names. These are living people of distinction— of class. May their number increase. May their children be taught Latin; modern languages; history, particularly of their country. May they be shown taste in flowers; in gardening; in houses; in food. May they respect kindness and order. May they continue to wear a suit when 'class' is required." - Sir (Edwin) Hardy Amies

I remember really enjoying Jade Empire, on the first play, up to about halfway through... and then the newness of certain game mechanics and the cool visuals of the very interesting world wore off enough that the all the negative aspects of the "BioWare formula" overtook my enjoyment.

Of course everyone is entitle to their own tastes - no one is right or wrong for liking or not liking a game.

NWN was very, very popular... and I know I'm in the minority for those who played it and didn't enjoy it. *shrug* I don't care, and I'm sure NWN fans don't care either.

"Bad" is an entirely subjective term.

Many people think the OC from NWN was "bad". I loved it. Many people think that the ME series is terrible. Having played a bit of the first game, I can say that I like it so far.

A more appropriate question would be "Has Bioware made a game that was generally poorly received?".

Rem acu tetigisti.

With the exception of that Sonic game, I believe the answer is no.

I've played every Bioware game except Sonic: Dark brotherhood, and Neverwinter nights. (including MDK and Shattered Steel) I woudn't say any of the ones I've played are bad, and evidence suggests NWN is good as well. The Sonic game on the other hand, is debatably bad, based on evidence from reviews and general opinion. Though I haven't played it myself, so yeah.

It has been implied "Jade Empire" did not do too well, actually. We never received exact figures to my recollection, but sales were far from record shattering. Anyone know how "Mass Effect Galaxies" did? If we are searching for a BioWare game that is technically bad, it would probably be that one. :P

@Zjarcal

The NWN OC was a strange thing. I played the heck out of it. First I finished it alone. Then I finished it several times online with other players. I treated it sort of like Diablo. An action oriented romp to plow through without much thought to the thin story. In that context I enjoyed it. I liked it even more when role-playing with others online as we moved through the game.

The OC lost its luster long after the fact. When I looked back on it with a critical eye, I realized how little I enjoyed the adventure as an actual single player RPG experience. It felt very weak in that context. I suppose that is how most people judge it.

Gloom, I took 'generally well received' to mean reviews and such. I still remember the 9.9 review from IGN for JE. :)

That explains it. I thought we were talking financial rather than critical success.

Bad? No, not for me anyway. Mass Effect 2 and Jade Empire were a bit disappointing, but I wouldn't call them bad.

I've only played it once and I do recognize that the story wasn't it's greatest strength (though I did enjoy it a lot). Also, having played the expansions as well as other party based Bioware RPGs, I admit that I would have a very hard time going back to having only one henchman that I couldn't even partially control. Perhaps if I had played Baldur's Gate before it, I'd be a bit more critical, who knows.

Nonetheless, I did enjoy it immensely. It also has a fond place in my heart as it was the game that truly got me into RPGs. A bit biased perhaps?

Maybe. We tend to see those games that touched us in a brighter light than others. I have fond memories of the NWN OC too. :) Difference was most of them come from multiplayer experiences. It was my first exposure to rp'ing in NWN, even if it was not my first experience with an RPG.
