We know about the Friendship and the Rivallry thingy and we know that there is at least one rival romance and I think David Gaider said he prefers the rival romance. And after giving it some thought, I think there are several possible LIs, (obviously only one is confirmed), that could possibly be a rival romance.

• Aveline - Especially if you are a mage, it's likely you'll need to change her opinion on mages before she'll be your girlfriend.
• Merrill - You might not like her using blood magic, though I'm not sure that she'll stop since that's how she fights. Also not sure how that'll be LI-y, but it IS Merrill.
• Fenris - He was a slave to a Tevinter Magister, it seems likely he might not be too keen on mages.
• Isabela - Unlikely it will lead to rivalry, but the whole "You're not thinking about bringing feelings into this, are you?" thing is suspicious.

I'm interested in hearing other opinions on the matter so please post.

I'm curious about this whole one rival romance thing, I thought I saw one of the devs say rivalry and friendship are two paths to the same thing.

Edit: Also if true that'd make pursuing romance more interesting I think because you don't know which path will get you romance but it promotes metagaming as well so I don't want to see it in-game.

Yeah apparently, You do the rivalry path and you change their "philosophy", like in DAO where you could harden Alistair and Leliana, and then you're friends and it's all sunshine and rainbows!!!

I think Isabela is a likely rival romance with the whole "bringing feelings into this thing." It would be an interesting romance if you take the rivalry path simply for trying to develop the relationship beyond a physical one.

Exactly, this is how I understood it, romance lines and scenes may change a bit but eventually you get the same outcome, if a dev can come here and further elaborate on this or say otherwise that'd be cool.

No, I'm pretty sure they said a LI could be romanced as either a friend or as a rival.

As far as -who- the rivalry LIs might be, I'm definitely Isabela for the guys, and Fenris for the girls. I can't see Merril or Aveline having that kind of romance... Merril seems too innocent, and Aveline... Well, I just can't see her doing that at all. If Varric is a LI, then he might be a rivalry LI, but I doubt he will be a LI at all.

This!  I'm totally looking forward to this.  It could be a great freaking twist to a kind of old mechanic.  Very, very cool potential here.

I think each companion has both a rivalry and friendship path that can result in rivalry or friendship romance (assuming you can romaance them).  I didn't get the impression that it was one type of romance per character.

I'm really looking forward to these rivalry relationships! Although I'll miss making Morrigan (or her DA2 equivalent) angry by disagreeing with everything she says and rescuing kittens from trees.

That is what I thought. I believe they said romancing through rivalry just brings more interesting results is all. I'm sure you can romance through both if they are romanceable.

I thought there was one LI that could only be romanced after the rivalry path was completed, but I'm starting to think I'm really wrong. Sorry. It's just hard to imagine a mage hater falling in love with a mage. Or even "worse", a blood mage. Without first doing the rivalry thing obviously, because from what I understand that's the only way to change their personality.
