should not be allowed to pop up right under you and one shot you while you're circle straffing, trying to kill those damn annoying bastards.

/end rant

I especially love it when they are down to a tiny sliver of life and just one more rocket will finish them off...except - BAM, pop right under you, critical mission failure one shot. ARGGGGG

if I didn't like Kahoku so much, I'd just skip the entire planet :/

Odd. I never had much trouble with the threashers.

I always circled around constantly in wide berths however. Stopping just seemed foolish to me.

Someone once gave me a tip that you should ride up to the little hills that usually surround the area when you are fighting a thresher maw. It seemed to help IIRC, stay clear of the flat terrain - assuming that's where you are on. :o

it seems like if I get off the flat terrain, the damn things stops popping up all together:/ I never stop moving (which makes me miss sometimes, good think you have unlimited rockets on a mako O_O ) and some times thresher maws die with no issues and other times, they literally pop right under me AS I'm moving and one shot me. completely and utterly random :/

Right under you? Like a ninja attack?

I don't know why they never do that to me. :crying:

Though really I go in odd circles and try to go near where they popped up last time because for some reason they don't tend to pop up in the same place.

!  I'll need to try moving to their old location instead, usual I just do a wide circle, thank you for the suggestion.

I've noticed that the mini-map will show a big red circle of where the thresher maw is before it pops up again. They used to be impossible for me to beat, and I don't think I've tried to fight them in the Mako after the first several failed attempts. I got some advice to use Warp on them, which worked really well. My Vanguard uses Warp, Adrenaline Rush, Warp, shotgun, run around and repeat until they're dead. My Sentinel just traps them in Stasis so they can't move.

That's the point, you shouldn't be circling it. There are many tips, but, the one I found most useful is to wait them to attack, them you jump the Mako, shoot, and repeat the process.

Easy battle.

you know, I haven't even tried killing them on foot, those things terrify the heck out of me (I grew up with Dune, Tremors - the first one, didn't see sequels until much later, Enemy mine - giant worms popping from underground to eat me are scary O_O )

my minimap only shows the red circle once they are up or when they just submerged again, then it disappears until next pop up...

oh and the damn thing didn't even move this time O_O it just submerged and surfaced from the same spot - lucky it didn't quite make it there. I swear every time I fight those things, its desperate praying that I get lucky and they die before I die >_>

Yeah this tactic works. Just make sure that when the Maw pops out, to find the spot were it will not go back underground. It's best to find the by trial and error and you can take at least one hit in fighting it with no problem.

Also save right before fighting one if you are still having trouble taking it down.

And if you have Ash and Wrex, and your Shep has immunity then, fighting on foot is a matter of time, but I've only tried that like once and as a Soldier.

It's quite simple to kill a maw on foot with any class. All you have do is circle strafe it. be careful to stay out of melee range though. As far as having a maw pop under the mako, it's usually pretty easy to tell if you are in an area will one will come up, you just have to watch the terrain. It usually has a bunch of small hills. As for defeating one with the mako also really simple. Once it pops out of the ground, stop, when it spits use the thrusters to jump over the spit. With just a little practice you can come out of the fight with no damage at all.

If you want to avoid the maws altogether, avoid flat terrain. If you need to fight them (ie: Kahoku's quest), I find that if you drive until it comes out, then stop, you can wheedle its life down with mostly rockets. As it shoots the goo, jump. When it goes back under, resume moving until it comes back out.

I discovered this on my last playthrough after gosh-knows-how-long I've been playing this game as well. If the thresher maw pops out a little distance away, just stop driving and see if it goes back into the ground. If it spits, just move the Mako a little to the right or left to avoid it. Usually you can find a spot where it will not go back into the ground, and then you can blast it continuously from the Mako with shells and bullets until it is dead.

More strafing than circling works as you will lose one or more of your team that are at your side if you don't use some healing. Your Shep will avoid the poison spit but your team members to your right/left will get hit.

Find the optimal range to keep the thresher above ground spitting at the mako does take practice and a little patience, but it makes the fight much easier. You can hit it with the cannon/machine gun inbetween, and once you have a sliver of health pop out the mako for the kill and maximum exp reward. I like the jumping tip, I usually go forward/back, to/fro to avoid the spit.

Just drive straight across from hill to hill and they'll never pop up under you.

On my Sentinel Insanity I used to get to casting distance hit it with Neural shock and bounced from pwnage distance with the quickness. They weren't so tough when they were choking on their own acid.

I swerved a lot and went in circles after they blasted me from the planet when sitting still. I only got hit once, and now know to save every five minutes.

I hate threshers... death worms they are.

When i first tried to take them on I guessed the hills helped a lot.

But that under you one hit kill is just annoying.

I'm playing on insanity for the first time in a while and, yup, if they pop up under the Mako you die. It's not that bad on Hardcore (at least on the XBox360). Definitely a reason to avoid to the flat areas.

Hey! I take offense at that! Image IPB

The way I handled them most times is the sit still shoot & jump method...if they would move, I'd just drive as fast as I could and hope to be far from them when they resurfaced. It is impossible when they pop up underneath you!

Maws are incredibly easy on foot. Like some said, you just straf in circles around them. Not to close so it can use it's claws and not too far so it can go underground. The perfect distance is the point when you see it's healthbar dissapear because of your distance from it. It never fails.

I love threshers because they give good XP, and they are so easy to kill on foot. I hate fighting them in the Mako, but on foot they are fish food.
