I never used to be scared of them until one popped up under my mako and wrecked it. After that, i always tried running to the hills when they dove underground.

I think if you try to circle around them in the Mako the Thresher Maw will "guess" where it has to pop up next to get you. Countered that by turning the other way every time the beast submerged.
Or you get the QA Supergun for one-shot-kill glory. ^^

I think there are specific points where it can pop up.

that is exactly what happend to me, several times.
I haven't noticed a specific pattern to be honest, but I did try killing one on foot and while it immediately one shot my team, it really doesn't seem to submerge if you are somewhat closish to it, so I just kept straffing from side to side and throwing bullets and biotics at it and it died O_O faster then when I used Mako's rockets. granted, I kinda sorta gave myself extra xp, armor and credits via console, but the weapons and both armor and weapon mods were all from vendors or crates and I didn't do any fiddling with rates of fire or what not.
blarg. I guess treshers are fought on foot from now on...go figure :/

It is annoying that they can possibly kill you in one shot if they come up beneath you.
Usually when one pops up, I'll keep driving in a circle until it comes up a decent distance away, and then stop so it doesn't go back underground. If you keep moving, it will keep going back underground. After that, I'll jump (in the mako) to avoid the acid attacks and shoot it with rockets when they're ready. If you stay mobile during the whole encounter, that just makes it harder to hit the thresher maw, and there's a greater chance that it will pop up from under you.
Thresher Maws only spawn on certain planets and in specific areas. I happen to have the strategy guide, so I know where they spawn, and I always fight them for the xp. I just make sure to go after them early so I don't have to replay too much if I have to reload.
