The thing about Shale is that she can be built lots of different ways.
Initially you'll want to build her strength and constitution up to 38 so she can equip the best crystals ('brilliant' ones). Once achieved, you'll probably only want to add to either strength or constitution (or both) depending on whether you want her powerful or tough.
She has four talent trees. Build the first and put spare attribute points in strength to make her deal out huge DPS.
Build the second and put spare attribute points in constitution to make her a formidable tank.
Build the third and she complements a ranged party brilliantly (Rock Mastery is the best buff in the game).
The fourth is a bit more situational, but it's great if you have a melee party fighting a single enemy (revenants, Gaxkang...), or small melee group (Kolgrim et al...)
The crystals themselves are situational. Certain enemies dish out, are are vulnerable to, or are immune to, certain types of damage, so it's best to swap these depending on the fight.
Also bear in mind that, like Dog, she cannot get grabbed by the High Dragon, Flemeth and, I think, Broodmother, which is nice to remember.
