Couldn't think of anywhere else to put this but is there any definative info about how long it takes an Asari to give birth? Nine months like humans? Or would it be plausable to say that due to the mental and biotic cababilities of all Asari that they would carry the child for around the two year mark before it is fully developed in all Asari Fields? Just need to know this for a novel I plan to write, small things like this help me allot in planing for totally stuffing the normal plot to give it my own twist.

Much appreciate an answer on this soon. Image IPB

A Trekki and a Dunie? M8DMAN, a guy after my own heart. :D

If you start picking up on my Alistair Reynolds or Peter Hamilton stuff, you may have to destroy me... As I'm the one with the beard.

Actually asari reproduction has been bothering me a lot. I can't stop wondering whether they actually have a female reproduction organ... Because the way Liara makes it sound it's like they only have sex with their brains or something.
I could be completely wrong, and I'd be grateful if someone shed some light on it.

I keep wondering things like
Do they get pregnant? Can they chose whether to get pregnant? If they can meld with any species are their bodies made of clay or something?

So many questions.

I just got the thought of an Asari going into clay mode and completely covering their mate lmao.

Oh the lolz. Now I'm visualizing them in a pingu kind of animated style. XD

I'm wondering about their mammary glands though. based on Asari we have seen so far, the older asari are, the bigger their breasts get O_O

I swear to god Matriarch Benezia has no nipples. Either that or they're freakishly low. Because all I could do when I saw her in cutscenes was wonder how they weren't showing in that hideous low cut dress of hers.

If your a Male Shepard youll hear him scream like a girl. Then he'll try to escape only to show his body getting dragged back by blue goo as his hand tries to hang on to the door...........

I also always think of Kif Kroker from Futurama and the way he reproduces.

I'm a big fan of the orignal Star Trek, not big on the spin off's though.

I guess Asari would make pretty smothering mothers... literally smothering.

I doubt its the exact same.
Asari live longer so they might take longer to have babies too.

I agree, since all asari have the capabilities to live 1000 yrs maybe past that, their reproduction of their own might be slow. I just also realised when liara's name was mentioned, she's a pureblood right, then wouldnt that mean that she has a high chance of developing ardnut-yahksi (similar to morinth) oh man just thinking about it makes me sad but at least shepard can only live for 150 yrs so by the that time liara will still be in her maiden stage.

Or will he? I mean I always wondered, when cerberus brought back shepard wasn't he implanted with the most advance cybernetics and if Im right androids in many games or film are made of some sort of cybernets as well, wouldnt that mean that shepard could be half cyborg and half human without him knowing.

The weird thing is...how did this species develop? What did they mate with before becoming space faring? If it was each other, well we have Morinth as a possible problem with that for any length of time.

EDIT - And to answer your question, humans undergo a great deal of mental dev postnatally. It's just not feasible to get as large a head as we do relative to everything else for it to be any other way. This is evident since we have relatively helpless young for the better part of a decade in relation to say herd animals where they are up and walking in minutes. Given their LONG lives, I see no reason to believe that asari don't undergo a similar paradigm, maybe even longer to account for their unique biology.

To the people who are hoping for Liara Shep babies, ain't gonna happen. She's a maiden, she'll continue being one for ~ another 200 years. Only matrons/matriarchs have blue babies.

This statement is not true, the titles given to asari are a social contruct not a physical one.

Liara could be the exception to the rule.Look at how society has changed ,it use to be you go to elementary - high school , find a job or college/job and then after a number of years you decide to start a family. Now you have teens who become pregnant and have a kid , forcing themselves to grow up faster. While still trying to in some cases get through junior high - high school.

Gestation length is determined by how large an offspring the mother can pass through her birth canal. The reason why human babies are so helpless and underdeveloped at birth relative to other species is that if gestation were any longer our heads would be too large for the mother to handle. Primates may have a similar gestation length, but primate young are born further along in their development than humans. I would expect that since Asari are of a similar size that their children would be born at the same developmental point and that gestation would be solely determined by how fast their cells replicate in order to get them to birth status. I wouldn't expect cell mitosis rates to be the same across alien species.

Asari obviously don't have intercourse, the 'sex organs' are simply for reproductive purposes. Yes, they birth live young, and yes they nurse them.

Sidenote to people talking about Shep/Liara offspring: I do believe I read/heard somewhere that maiden stage asari cannot bear children. (If anyone has any concrete evidence counter to this, please say so) It'd be like trying to get a nine year old to have a baby, it just doesn't happen. Liara is only barely over a hundred years old, and it typically takes an asari at least two hundred and fifty years (give or take about 50 years depending on meld frequency) to reach matron stage when they have kids. That said, don't expect any form of little blue Shepkids.

IIRC The secondary codex on asari biology does mention that an asari maiden can have children if her and her partner mate quite often.

You know we shouldn't be questioning Asari reproduction it's Krogan and Turians that I question about. I mean do Krogan lay eggs?

I suddenly had a theory

Asari comes from the planet Thessia which is in the Athena Nebula. (the next part might be wrong)
Athena is the Virgin godess of wisdom the children she birthed were from mind links not physical copulation. Maybe that is how Asari reproduce by mind links.

And what did Liara do with Shepard before the final charge in ME3? A mind link!!! What if she tricked Shepard into having a child with her, without Shepard knowing?? O_o

As far as I know, some says that Erechtheus was Athena's child. But he was "just" raised by her, Gaia was his mother. So... adopted mom? =]
