How much do we know about N7?

It's surprising how little we know about this essential part of Commander Shepard's background. I mean, on Alchera (Normandy Crash Site), you can recover your N7 helmet and put it on your desk in the Captain's Cabin. How exactly is an N7 helmet different from a normal helmet, or an N6 helmet? And for all those N7 missions: can an N6 do the job just as adequately? And they apparently sell replicas of N7 armor (Conrad Vernerbought as set). Would N6 armor replicas sell nearly as well? I mean, a big "N7" sign takes the place of your photo in ME2's weapon selection screen, for Heaven's sake.

We know N7 is the vocational code for the most elite special forces soldiers in the Alliance. Commander Shepard and Captain David Anderson are both N7 graduates. My question is, do we know any other N7 soldiers in the Mass Effect universe? I only have the games, not the novels or the comics, but I don't mind spoilers if you just tell me the N7 soldier's names.

Also, would you like to meet other N7s in ME3? Perhaps one of Shepard's fellow trainees?

Finally, does anyone know how many N7 soldiers graduate from training each year? And could any loremaster point me to any canon information regarding the training program? Like exactly what kind of physical/mental training goes on in there?

For the numbers, I doubt we get any definitve ones, after all they are SpecOps in a sort of way, so their personalia are most probably classified, to the least not easily accessable.

As for the training, I think that those people ranked N7 do not recieve any special training, but are chosen because they already posses the required abilities, aka being already hardened veterans, which on the other hand definetaly had special "courses" over their career. They are pretty much the Alliance Spectres, though with more red tape attached.

But even SPECTRES ("chosen, not trained") receive some kind of special training & gear. Shepard had "SPECTRE training" in ME1 and all those Master Gear guns. Tela Vasir/Saren both have very fancy gears & skills.

I just imagined there would be more background behind such a ubiquitous symbol as "N7". Perhaps we'll know more in ME3.

I do hope so. But all I can think of for training on already hardened veterans would be Hell-Week Level 2 to make them even more tough and less responsive to stress and traumata. Anything else would just be training them in other fields, which is nothing special.

Of facts I have little. Though I have loads of speculation to make up for it!

Based as how Shepard and Anderson are assigned to the Normandy as line officers, I think N7 is a bit like the US Army’s Rangers. Where soldiers (or in this case Naval Officers/Marines) go to an N7 course and, upon graduation, receive the N7 designation which attaches to them no matter where their military career takes them.

That being said there could well also be ‘N7 Battalions’ or ‘N7 Teams’, special ops units composed entirely of N7 qualified marines.  Such a unit would have to be damn near the Batarian Hegemony's worst nightmare!

Its that little skill bar in ME1 labeled Spectre training, you don't see his "training" but thats what it means.

IIRC N7 is an elite military group made by the alliance. The other person who I know was in it was Anderson prior to him participating in the First Contact War. You can read more of it in Mass Effect: Ascension.

I imagine the N7 training is a lot like modern day SERE training and only Spec Ops folk some officers get it.
Kai Leng was N7 before being court martialed and recrutied by Cerberus.

Thanks for the info guys! Guess I'll have to read the novels to find out. Kai's name remind me of Kai Allard-Liao (anyone get the reference?).

I wonder if there'd be as many N7s in the Alliance as there are Rangers in the U.S. Army. So far we've known only 3 N7s in existence - that's as rare as Ardat-Yakshi!

I'd like to think of N7 more like the Delta Force or the Sayeret Matkal. An elite special ops unit with only a few hundreds/thousands of agents. :-) Commander Shepard is certainly more of a special ops commando than an army soldier, judging from the missions in ME1 & ME2.

Meanwhile, I'll just read up on the Delta Force's training program and imagine that the N7 training program to be something similar. :bandit:

There's an Emily Wong news report about a Marine "N7" Special Forces team being sent to a Batarian colony to take out some sort of weapons factory.

We know the training must suck because in ME1 I could not hit the broadside of a barn with my signiture weapon.

Elite level ones is an oxymoron.

True Bob, but we shouldn't confuse the game mechanics for how powerful/skilled a character is in a story sense.

I always figured that N7 were more akin to Delta Force which recruits the best from all other SOCOM branches. The other N1-6 would make up the equivalent of modern day Rangers, EOD, Scout Snipers, Search and Rescue, SEALs and other elite occupations with varying levels of training. Special Forces is a very broad term, and has varying levels of competence within it.

Though not specifically mentioned, Alenko is probably an N(I'd guess 3-5), and Jenkins may have been an N(probably only 1-3) as well. Ashley Williams is probably infantry, not special forces, so she would not be an N designate.

We really do not come into personal contact with a lot of Alliance troops though, so our pool of candidates is very limited to start making assumptions as to how many N7's there are in the Alliance.

Wikia:

N7 is a vocational code in the Systems Alliance military. The "N" designates special forces and the "7" refers to the highest level of proficiency. It applies to marines who have graduated from an elite training program.

SAS basically if you ask me.

From Mass Effect: Revelation I know that the N7 trained at Arcturus Accademy and that Captain/Councillor David Anderson was a graduate as a Lieutenant.

Also if biotic doesn't that put Shep someone else entirely?

The codex goes on and on about how human biotics are rare, and the Alliance offers them big money to join up....

So a biotic N7 Shep would be worth even more than a regular N7?

Biotics are branded as precious, which has caused more coddling than your collective  human teats

It's stupid on the same scale as the T-800 that a supposedly elite soldier can't sight a weapon though.
It's a game, gameplay is what matters, if the story and the gameplay don't compliment each other it's either bad writing or bad games design.

I always figured them to be SAS rather than Rangers too, if only because SAS are just more... bad ass.

SAS, SEALS, etc, etc, are all Earth-centric. N7 is all of the above and more, a conglomerate of all special forces.

Alliance, all current special forces are the basis of N7.

According to current US army standards Rangers fulfill the same role as SEALs do. Green Berets used to be more of the special operations assault but now they are used more for training foreign fighters. As for which is the best? They all special warfare teams cross train with each other so who is better than who comes down more to what they had for breakfast or how much sleep that got the previous night. Simple.
