You don't really need to be able to open locks in this game. there's usually a companion that can do it for you (unlike certain parts of DA).

If you insist on doing it yourself there's a couple of options:

1) Play a class that has Open Lock as a class skill (this usually means you'll not be optimal at fighting)

2) Take one level of a class that has Open Lock as a class skill and take Able Learner feat. This makes the cost of all skills 1 and allows you to max the skill but you'll still need a high INT or a class with enough spare skill points (not usually warriors).

If you build a DEX warrior that will dovetail into your lockpicking. You'll wear light armor (chainshirt, mithral breastplate) and use light weapons (short sword, kukri). Rangers aren't optimal but they have decent skill points and have DEX leanings.

I'm sure someone will post a link to some warrior builds soon.

Rogue 1 / Ranger (x)

Take Rogue and Able Learner at 1st level. Your choice on range or dual-weapon for ranger combat style. With a 14 Int and human (or 16 Int and tiefling), you'll get 9 skill points per level and can fill a LOT of rogue skills while leveling as ranger (Open Lock, Disable Device, Search, Tumble, UMD, etc.). I prefer a dual-wielding strength build and stocking up on improved favored enemy feats for a little extra damage.

It depends, "melee character with range support" is pretty vague. What kind of melee character do you want to be? Do you want to be a 2 handed weapon basher in full plate armor, a finesse fighter, a backstabber, etc. There are a lot of different ways to do that same thing. On top of that, ranged support can be done with spellcasting, ranged weapons, and class abilities. It's going to be a lot easier to figure out a build if you have a concrete idea of specifically how you want to do things.

I would recommend considering whether opening locks really is that important to you. If you include a Rogue in your party, then leveling it is a waste of time. If you don't include a Rogue, then you are going to be very limited in terms of build options, and not necessarily just for the main character. You may very well need to have the other party members pick up some of the exploration skills that normally would be provided by a Rogue, as well.
