I mean the whole point o DA2 is to travel to an all new land with a new hero to have all new adventures.  However every other person we meets is someone who knew the Warden.  I mean we know that the Keeper and Merril are both back from the Dalish Origin.  Isabella is back from the Pearl.  And Anders from Awakening is back.  Not only that but all three are companions of Hawke!  Way to make everything new....
I mean Bioware has taken the saying 'Its a small world"  and used it as the foundations of expanding their world.
It's like if I moved to Canada tomorrow and every other person I meet knows my neighbor form back in Jersey.

Oh you live in Jersey....

im sure there will be plenty of new characters who have never seen the warden, and also merril and the keeper were in it for about an hour.. i dont think they should be lumped together with anders

But you hardly got to know Merril and Isabela at all, so they're pretty much new characters IMO. I believe Bioware made them companions to give this game a sense of nostalgia, which is a pretty smart decision.

I suspect many people NOT on this forum won't remember Isabela or Merrill (may not have ever met them at all in DAO), and obviously will only know Anders if they played Awakening.

Its probably more like if you moved across the street, seeing as Kirkwall is like right next door to Ferelden.

Anders was the only one who always did meet the Warden. You could even not encounter Isabela and Merril depending on how you played.

Also, Free Marches is a haven for Fereldan refugees. Figures we'd meet some old faces.

Was Anders ever officially confirmed? Because at last count, I haven't been on the forum in a few days, he was still nothing more than fan speculation.

How is crossing the sea comparable to moving accross the street?

Have you seen the map of Thedas?  This isn't exactly the Pacific we're talking about.  It's like about as far from Ferelden as Cuba is from Miami.

I think one or two recurring characters is a good idea, as it lends to continuity. You don't want too many, though, as then it, as the OP suggests, makes the world a bit smaller.

That's what I get for not checking all the threads on this forum before posting. *sighs*
Thanks for pointing that out.

Two posts makes me a troll?  Well whatever you say.  It just seems to me that Bioware would have been better served to have one of the mentioned characters in the game.  Not all three.  Just what I think.

I understand what you're going for... But it does seem a bit late to acknowledge it and change it, considering the fact release day is closing in upon us.

In the end, people do like returning characters. Hopefully, the supposed issue is fixed with further expansion(s).:?

[Footnote: This post is littered with corrections. Smart idea to post anything when my fingers are tired from writing storylines.]:pinched:

I think they included so many characters so that this feels like a sequel. They got a lot of backlash (and there is still a thread about it that is active) for leaving the Warden and Fereldan. Giving us these little things help us remember that this is still Thedas and not another IP

Eh, reminds me of what Suikoden does. Takes a few characters -usually fan favorites- and plops them into the sequal.

Gives the players something familiar to hold on to in a new story and setting.

Just like in Real Life with New York, in Thedas, interesting people are only from Ferelden.

It is akin to the English Channel; still, if you moved from France to Dover and run into so many people from your old country it would be pretty odd -- UK is quite large, and so is Free Marches and rest of Thedas around it.
