This really shows that people will complain no matter what... Everyone was complaining that there wasn't enough from Origins. Now everyone's complaining there's too much from Origins. The forum has complained about everything from every end of the spectrum, and the game isn't even out yet.

Artistic license. It helps establish continuity between the games, as well as being a nice little bonus for the fans. DAII is NOT real life.

You should see the Star Wars old republic forum, this one is no where near as bad.

Have you seen the map of Thedas?  This isn't exactly the Pacific we're talking about.  It's like about as far from Ferelden as Cuba is from Miami.

It is akin to the English Channel; still, if you moved from France to Dover and run into so many people from your old country it would be pretty odd -- UK is quite large, and so is Free Marches and rest of Thedas around it.

Yes, that was what I was trying to say, it is hardly comparable to moving accross the street.

That's not why we did it, as it "gosh we need to make this feel like a sequel!" ...but the idea was to have threads of continuity from one game to the next. Lots of stories do that, and if someone's going to suggest that they already know all there is to know about Isabela, Merrill and Anders and that we couldn't possibly do anything new with them... well, I'll leave that for them to discover on their own whether or not it's true. Evidently when it comes to ties to the first game it's "damned if you do, damned if you don't", so I'll just be happily damned. ;)

The English Channel is an example that serves the "they should be different" point. There are other expanses of ocean of similar distance that do not betray vast differences in culture at all.

That just proves distances of that scale shouldn't be much of an indicator of cultural divide in the first place.

We don't know that it isn't.  We barely know anything.  At most, we've got a couple characters who can be linked.  That's it.  The architecture, for example, is wildly different.

We barely met Isabela and Merrill, to be fair. Anders is the only "major" returning character and even he will have signifcant changes.

This is the third thread I've noticed you in tonight in which you've been incredibly unhappy. *hands you a cookie* I dispense hugs too, but only on request.

I don't think it's about expecting cultural divide, just simple probability of having people effectively move to another country and yet despite having whole country to settle in and more, still manage to choose that one particular town to stay that leads to everyone running into each other.

It's not as bad as Star Wars with its "one city per planet" simplification/approach, but can see how it could stretch suspension of disbelief as the number of "old favourites" you get to meet increases.

Makes me think of when I tell people I grew up in Brooklyn.
"Oh yea?  My friends boyfriend is from there.  Do you know him?  Joe?"
Umm, yea, we all know everyone.  Posted Image
It is rather coincidental.  Too coincidental?  Well, I've been rather negative thus far, so in a fit of magnanimity, I'll say . . . hey, it could happen!!!!!!

I'd sympathize with the argument if we were talking about the likes of Leliana, Sten, and Anders here.  But we're not really.

Well, we may be running into Anders and Alistair at least, by the looks of it. If there's any more such notable individuals that we'll get to cross our paths with (say, Wynne) remains to be seen.

I have now complaints I don't just base a game on open world ability I look at everything fighting style to leveling up powers experincewepons diolougemainsoryplotI mean there is more to a game besides open world ability or expanding a world a game can still be the best game without it .If that was the case DRagon Age Origins would not have wakled away with game of the year and that game had loading while travelingfrom one plac to another and like I said they came out on top

While I've gotten that impression too, I don't think the same people were/are saying both things.

I mean the whole point o DA2 is to travel to an all new land with a new hero to have all new adventures.  However every other person we meets is someone who knew the Warden.  I mean we know that the Keeper and Merril are both back from the Dalish Origin.  Isabella is back from the Pearl.  And Anders from Awakening is back.  Not only that but all three are companions of Hawke!  Way to make everything new....
I mean Bioware has taken the saying 'Its a small world"  and used it as the foundations of expanding their world.
It's like if I moved to Canada tomorrow and every other person I meet knows my neighbor form back in Jersey.

Anders is not a full fledged party member. His role is equivalent to Jowan, Zathrian or Teagan.

The other two were forgettable. The Merril in DA2 isn't even the same. She might as well be a whole new character. Not to mention she was only present for about 30 minutes. And Isabella had 10 minutes in Origins.

Mr Gaider theres a difference between returning characters and bringing possibly dead characters back from the dead...I'm guessing the rage over the US ret-con wasn't a clear enough signal that this is a bad idea. I didn't give a crap about Merrill or Isabella because they were such small characters. In fact I played the Dalish origin once...and only once...so I totaly forgot she existed until she was announced...then I had to look her up on the DA Wiki and said to myself "huh...I don't remember her at all"...but Anders?...seriously?...I can understand the possible camo if he DIDN'T die...like Wrex for example...but a Companion!? Geez...this is outrageous as far as I'm concerned. I feel like this is turning into Dragonball Z where death means absolutly nothing.

Yeah, i think it's more like different strokes for different folks. That said, it does pretty much result in the "damned either way" effect Mr.Gaider recognized Posted Image

He's not?  Then why do we go rescue his friend from Templars?  With him?  Posted Image

And, umm, it is indeed the same Merrill.  She just, you know, doesn't look so much the same.

Sort of like Isabela.
