You can tell Steam not to auto update each game.  Right click the game on the Steam GUI.  Go to Properties.  Go to Update.  Pick "Do not Automatically update this game"

Thanks for that eisberg77

........but did you know that when you do that (which I did) and then close down steam and restart it, it just goes back to the default setting which is to automatically download any updates.

Dont beleive me? Try it. ;)

No......I reaffirm what I said...I will never buy another game through steam. <_<

edit;

Okay, I take back what I just said...to an extent.
If you change the settings in steam to not automatically download updates it will only save that option if you always start the game by starting steam first.
If (like me) you use a shortcut to your game to start then that option is not saved.

Doesn't happen for me.
At least not with any of the games I don't automatically update (Mount & Blade mainly).

Aye, same with me.

Oh wait. Reading comprehension failure; you may be correct. Mount & Blade had reset itself to automatically update... although I can't be sure if that was due to the bug you mentioned, or the fact that I re-installed Steam.

I pre-ordered the game, I bought Stone Prisioner and Warden's keep. I don't know exactly what I paid, but it was about $75 all told.

So, I'm playing happily through the game, got Starfang, it was awesome. I was really having fun.

This last time, I load up the game, and there's some "blah blah can't be authorized" message. Whatever. It didn't make me do a force load, so I thought everything was fine. I load the game, play for an hour or so, and in my first fight I noticed that my sword is gone. Looked back over my older saves, and they all had the same problem, since I'd always figured I'd just live with any mistakes that took up more than an hour of play so it wasn't worth it to keep old saves around. But that's not the point.

The point is, had I stolen this game, and stolen the downloadable content like plenty are already doing, bypassing with ease the restrictions that your paying customers live with, this wouldn't have happened. The people that are paying you are getting a worse product than your paying customers. Don't try to justify it with "support" or any of the other flimsy crap you try to justify this with. I've always paid for my games, I've got over 30 in my Steam list, and this is the thanks I get. You treated me like a theif right from the beginning, and the hamfisted and inept way you did it made me wish I was one. I might not start stealing, but I sure as hell am never buying DRM'd content again. It's always irritated me, done absolutely nothing to deter theieves and never will, and this is the last straw.

In closing, **** you.

I like waffles too!!

@blasphemae

I too would like to know this, I think alot of people don't realise that it logs in automatically, can anyone confirm that with no internet connected at all ( as in no cable or wireless on) the dlc still loads

I can confirm that I am not automatically logged in and still have access to the DLC. Win7 x64, DAO patched to 1.01.

I have my router on a powerbar.  I turn it off unless I specifically want to use the net.  I also can plainly see the logged off message in the lower left of the title screen.  The only times I've ever logged in was to enter my DVD code and download the extras (Shale, Blood Dragon Armor, Memory Band and Wardens Keep).

Regarding Steam and DRM: At least DAO doesn't make you use Steam just to install your retail DVD's.  I recently had this experience with Modern Warfare 2.  I absolutely hate the idea that I am dependent on a service to install the games I've paid for.  And don't say that Valve will release patches etc. should they cease to exist.  They have never made any such claim.

thanks for the reply, thats good to know. :D

Click bottom left where it says logged in, should take you to account options.

Yeaaaaah... nope. That must be for the digital versions only, because the only thing remotely close to "account options" when I click the log in at the bottom left is the "Manage account / forgot password"
button, which just takes me to a password recovery page on EA.

I have the retail version, and when you click the bottom left button (labelled either "Logged In" or "Logged Out"), another window should appear displaying the following:

Email Address: [Input Field]
Password: [Input Field]
Manage account / forgot password
["Log In" / "Log Out"]
[Create Account] [Close]
[Checkbox: Always log me in]     What is this?

If you wish to uncheck the checkbox, simply logging out should do that for you. If you wish to check the checkbox, whilst entering your password, the checkbox should enable and allow you to check it.

Providing you have already passed initial authentication for your DLC, you can play logged off/offline with no trouble. In fact the only times I've personally experienced trouble authenticating DLC is if I actually enable "Always log me in".
