So go with the shotgun training and in addition to Guardian and AA you can use any power set up you prefer but it is common to use Heavy Warp, Area Overload, level two throw (or maxed if you prefer) and then either points in Cryo Blast or a BP.
Warp ammo or Tungsten are solid, but you can also make good use of pretty much any bonus power you like really.
Oh and here is the Power Calculator so you can try different builds before going in game.
Armor wise, the Kestrel set is solid for shields, but I tend to mix and match for looks more then go only with the bonuses, so I'd recommend the same. Here's the wiki for the pieces for quick reference also.
Another setup you can try is the Caster Sentinel with Power Armor, Raider and Blood Dragon Armor for a 45% Power Damage boost.
Anyway, which of the weapons do you prefer using the most?

I recommend shotguns if you want to go the CQC route. You can always use the GPS for medium range if you feel like changing up your fighting style.
I chose Warp Ammo as my bonus, but as I think you will eventually see, Ammo Powers are totally unnecessary for this class... Warp Explosions, Overloaded explosives & Cryo-Throw combos = sooo muuchhh firepower / insta-kill... Any one of the 1-point wonder powers (NS, Slam, Stasis, etc.) would suit you much much better... also freeing up points for Cryo or whatever.
On the other hand, you could go the sniper route... which probably plays like a drone-less engineer. It would probably make better use of warp ammo though.

That last fight with Hock is tough, but satisfying when you beat it. And Grunt or Jacob's Squad Incendiary would have helped against the Vorcha, I waited til I could max that on Jacob with some of the Firewalker missions and another mission or two before getting Mordin.
It should be a fun run, just be prepared for Horizon's Praetorian, having the Cain makes that fight go faster.

That's where I had some trouble too, but the Sentinel is one tough cookie.

Yeah hock took me awhile. Ran out of thermal clips a cpl times where i had to risk going out to get more ammo. Te plaza fight on Dossier: Professor i ran out of ammo there also. Been using Zheed and Kasumi for a bit. Was using my Signularity Projector and having Kasumi use Flashbang grendade or Overload to cause a huge explosion. But yeah Sentinel was a good choice as its a tough mfer to bring down. Got to lvl 6 also and can finally do Assault Armor. What should i focus on next with it?

But I would recommend going with Heavy Warp first, since it will do 200 base damage to everything on a 6 second cool down and I think you need to beat Horizon to be able to respec.
If you have Flash Bang, going with Improved can pretty much make up for Overload as you level up.

Donovan Hock is mostly just tedious tbh. Advancing forwards is a waste of effort (except for the shield dropping scene obviously). It just ends with you facing the enemies on 1 side and him turning up in the gunship behind you = game over. All you have to do is target the mechs first and kill everything else off in your own time.

Yeah Hock took me about 20-25 mins to wear down. Cause i had all those goons shooting at me. Also Preteaor shepard i chose Warp Ammo skill and going with AR Training for my Sentinel.
Going through on Vanguard atm, if i didn't have Barrier as my chosen skill so i could pop up and shoot stuff more often it would probably of took twice as long.

yeah my tech armor saved me quite a bit. was overcautious also though. It was a long fight. Even with 500+ shields the enemy can usually rip through it pretty quick if i let them. Think when i did Hock i had 442 shields with Tech Armor.

I personally ended up going Push/Cryo with the Flamethrower for the lulz.
And more lulz.
