so, what exactly where you expecting? Or rather, what wouldn't you have seen as a failure? In my book "let's kill it" should start a fight. So i expect Hawke to say or do something along those lines. Punching the rock in the face was definitely unexpected and right along those lines. If i come across something like that ingame, hopefully i'll remember to pause (the game, that is), otherwise my party is going to die because i'm down on the floor laughing.

Maybe a line like:

"No deal. How about we kill you instead?" - immediately followed by the start of combat, without the punch. That would be along the lines of what I'd expect. The paraphrase didn't say. "Let's kill it (punch in the face)"

And as you say, it is unexpected - which may be alright if an NPC does it, but not your PC - the character you, the player, are supposed to be in control of should not be able to suprise you like that. It puts unwanted distance between the PC and the player. If your PC does something you don't expect, it shifts you from playing your character to watching your character do something you do not control - a lesser experience.

To say this game looks worse than Origins means one of two things

A) You never played Origins

B) You're going blind.

Oh yes, that's probably why I have both Origins and Awakening icons. Which, coincidentally, you don't seem to have...
So, you were saying?

Oh I see. I dont have the icons for them, so naturally I dont own any of them. Thats sound logic...if you're an idiot.

But, if you want proof, here it is. At the end of Dragon Age Origins, you find out that the kangaroo was behind it all. Suck on that.

Oh, I'm sure you do. By the means of a torrent, probably.

Not so suprised you resorted to insults, either. Speaks volumes about you, really - especially your "intellect".

okay, first off all: The paraphrase shows the intent off what is going to happen. And imo, it still fits. Your paraphrase would pretty much replace the cutscene, why show it if you already know it.

However, yes, it is different from origins, where you knew exactly what your character was saying (seeing how you read it). But i don't see it as a lesser experience, and it also isn't completely unexpected. You still control the way your chara turns. I don't think the complete control you want is possible in a Videogame.

Last, these unexpected things are pretty much why i play these games. If i know exactly what is going to happen in the next 5-10 Minutes/Scenes, there is no reason for me to continue playing. In addition the PC doing unexpected things helps create the person. In Origins, i created a city elf with a certain personality in mind, playing the game, i had to constantly adapt to the things i was able to say and do, and at the end of the game, i had my character. But that's just personal preference.

Still, even objectively i can't really see it as a failure.

The preview rocked, but one thing stood out... the fact that Mike Laidlaw is made entirely out of win. I swear he could sell snow to polar bears or something.

I like this idea of different schools of fighting, similar to what mages already have. Interesting.

The punch was very funny too, like murder-knife but without the knife XD

Well the combat difficulty looks pretty decent for casual/normal.About same as DAO from what I could tell, except your melee party members indeed spend less time looking confused and more time actually fighting when youre not controlling them. The faster pace combined with the pretty huge range of aoe skills seems like it might make nightmare a bit more, well, nightmarish than on DAO.

Graphics looked decent enough imo, although I prefer context to a pretty wrapping anyway so probably a little biased on that.Environment looked pretty bland though, but perhaps a creepy underground thaig isnt supposed to look like a marketplace anyway.Hopefully the places actually supposed to look like one have a little more life to them.

The warrior animations went a little bit into the feather weapon territory, although its still somewhat better than the 2h animations in DAO,which to me looked like it was a peasant doing the wielding rather than an accomplished warrior.

A definite improvement in the mage animations though, looks more like an actual bolt of arcane energy or whatnot compared to the DAOs funny coloured bubble coming from your staff.

The new female animations:a major improvement from DAO.

Hawke asking Bethany about the strange creature ->pretty cool!

Its on fire, its made out of rock and its on fire...So lets punch it in the face!Uh yeah, lets not<_<.Although I suppose the punch fulfilled its purpose of bringing more flare into the conversation.Still,I do not want to see my mage punching burning piles of rock...punching them just isnt something a self respecting mage should be caught doing afterall ;).

Overall looks pretty good, cant wait for march 11th.

it could be different for each class. a warrior punches, a rogue stabs with knife or throws bomb. a mage could throw a fireball or an ice spell.

I certainly hope so :).

Whould be cool, even just as cool whould be to have fem. Hawke give, not that rock in the vid, but just some ohter NPCs a hard bit*hslap on the cheek insted of just falcon punch/headbang every dude that disbehave.

Thanks for the link OP.

The warrior attack animations look a heck of alot better than the rogue animations to me. I hate all the ninja arobatics and smoke bombs of the rogue animations.

I'm not too big a fan of the new look to this game, very cartoony and it looks like Fenris still is running around without shoes on. Hopefully I'm wrong, otherwise he's just going to look rediculous back at camp if I end up playing DA 2. If you plan to adventure in my party, bring a shirt, pants (or a skirt) and shoes...basic requirements!

Varric's rain of arrows is directly lifted from WoW's hunter class ability Volley. Volley looked fine in WoW with it's over-the-top art direction and combat but even in this more cartoony Dragon Age sequel, it just seems very out of place when he fires a crossbow up in the sky and somehow twenty or so arrows come raining down. That's some crossbow...hell, why does anyone in the party use a sword or even magic? Just give them all a bunch of Varric's crossbows!

I don't want everything to be predictable - I agree that that would ruin the game. But if I create and control a character, I do not want to be surprised by that character - only by everything that happens in the world around that character, or that happens to the character that the character has no control over.
But anything that my character can control, I should be able to fully control, because it's MY character.

Sure, DA:O had some limitations as well, in that the most preferred options may sometimes not be available in a conversation - but that situation hasn't improved in DA2, either. It has worsened, because now they've obscured the choices of response behind paraphrases with intent icons. That way, it no longer feels like I make my character speak a line. It feels like watching someone else's character improvise a line based on my short direction about the intent he should convey. :(

Some opinions are more justified than others. Is murder for personal profit wrong? I think so, but it's just an opinion. (sorry for the extreme example :D)
