The confusion can probably be sourced back to Chris's posts on the issue. In his first post, he said this:
Chris Priestly wrote…
Hello everyone.
We are aware that a small group of Playstation 3 users are getting corrupted saves while playing Mass Effect 2. We are aware of the issue and we are working on a patch to fix it. This issue is caused by too many level transitions within a single gaming session. Players who play for an extended period may encounter this issue.
In the mean time, there is a very simple work around to prevent this issue. Simply restart your game every few hours. By shutting down and restarting your game, you will not encounter the corrupted save issue.
Emphasis added by me.
There he mentioned the level transitions. But in Chris's more recent post on the issue, he didn't mention it. That post was about the patch in general, and how it fixed a host of issues.
In both posts he mentioned restarting the game every few hours. While this is good information, it is also a bit misleading because it may not address the level transition issue.
So I'm gonna post steps you can take to minimize running into the level transition issue and avoid the corruption glitch. I promise you, it's not a lot of work at all, and if it's the only thing preventing you from playing this awesome game, you really have no excuse to play anymore.
NOTE: This will NOT resolve other issues in the game, like the game-breaking Samara glitch (which you can avoid) weird graphics issues, DLC causing the game to glitch and freeze up, and freezes happening over and over again in specific places. The last might be the result of a defective copy of the game, but I don't know.
WORKING THE WORK AROUND:
The corruption glitch is caused by too many level transitions. To keep it simple, it means whenever you have a loading screen before a new level is loaded. THIS MEANS ON THE NORMANDY TOO. Every time you move up and down the Normandy, it involves many level transitions. So…
1) To keep yourself safe, save and restart your game before starting a new mission.
NOTE: You don't need to restart the PS3 to do this. Just quit then restart your game from the XMB.
If you're like me and you want to talk to your team after every mission, it should be okay to do that. But to keep it fast and simple, quit your game after you go back to the CIC. This will minimize the level transitions before heading off to a new mission.
2) Save and quit your game before starting a DLC mission. This means the Shadow Broker mission, especially. If you plan on playing it in one sitting, and you should, refresh the game and start fresh for the best experience. Actually, you should save and quit your game ON ILLIUM before starting the Shadow Broker mission (or any Illum mission) for the best results.
3) If you're gonna do some planet mining, restart your game after you're all done (again, from the CIC for best results) before starting a new mission. I don't know if planet mining constitutes a level transition, but better to be safe than sorry.
4) Every once in a while, back up your save. If you don't have a USB stick, make another profile on your PS3 and back it up there. The only downside to this is that you can't copy OVER another file on the PS3, so you have to switch to the new profile, delete the copy, switch back to your normal profile and then copy the game over. This is the most time consuming of all the processes that I listed, and it still takes only about 30 seconds.
If you take these few simple precautions, it will have minimum impact on your playing of the game. I say minimal because quitting and restarting is a bother, but on the plus side, you should be almost completely inoculated from the dreaded corruption glitch. Then you can actually have some fun while you wait for the patch to come around. =D
There is no workaround for the other minor glitches (audio and visual) in the game, either future patches will address them, or we'll have to learn to live with them. Some of the rainbow graphic glitches can be addressed by a restart.
For the Samara game-breaking glitch, make sure you ask Liara about Thane and Samara before starting the Lair of the Shadow Broker mission.
If you suspect your DLC is causing freezes, maybe re-installing everything will solve the issue?
If your game continues to freeze at the same spot over and over, it might be defective. Take it back for another copy and hope for the best!
In any case, stay tuned to this board for more tips on how to avoid or resolve the worst points of this game. Good luck!
