The D2D Meet the Dev Team Contest Winner Who Lost

I have to tell you a story. Yesterday I received a call from Direct2Drive informing me that I had been pre-selected to fly to your studio in Canada to meet you for the opening of the game Dragon Age: Origins. I was about to win that contest.
I was not qualified because I do not have a valid US Passport. Needless to say, I’m disappointed. Of course I feel like an idiot for not having this essential item. I hope you will, nevertheless, let me introduce myself, and explain how I find this situation hilariously ironic.
You see, I am not only a big fan of video games, and Bioware, and the style of games that Bioware produces, but I’m also an aspiring software engineer, especially for games.
I like dabbling in physics engines, making tools, and high-level programming, which is facilitated by my Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Physics, and Computing Information Technology.
I am currently in the process of applying to graduate school. I would like to explore the technologies and programming paradigms involved in designing systems that interface between our virtual realities we have created and our physical environment. I also am applying to UC Santa Cruz, in the off chance I can work with virtual characterization with Michael Mateas, perhaps, or maybe Noah Wardrip-Fruin. A professor who would enable research in interactive storytelling.
However, that is really one goal. My other main passion, which I am and will continue to do as an Avocation if never a Vocation, is Game Dev, especially the software aspect. And Bioware’s quality story-driven and interactive paradigm of Game Dev has been an inspiration to me. And that is the irony; I have won and then lost the contest that would have introduced me to people who are doing exactly what I want to be doing.
So I request this: Please consider talking with me sometime about Game Dev at Bioware. Talk to me about 3D Graphics Engines and APIs and the particulars of software engineering at Bioware. I have felt that I have reached a point that I need some guidance, some mentorship in this crazy field. Let me learn from some of you, or at least have a couple of discussions about programming. I am qualified for entry level work in the game industry, and I am highly passionate about this kind of work. I love storytelling, I love games, and I would love to learn from you.
Also, does Bioware ever offer internships?
Sincerely,
Robert “Lopie” Rhine

No offense, but your query and plea may reach better ears if you email Bioware HR or even the people who handle employment and internships. I might be wrong, but on here I foresee that many people might accuse you of trying to pity your way into a job (i know you aren't doing that, I'm just saying that you run the risk of people seeing it that way).
Also, as far as internships go, I would be surprised if they didn't offer internships, but I would also be surprised if said internships were offered to people outside of canada (with the exception of the Texas Office).
With that said, I'm sorry that something as simple as a non-valid passport stopped you from winning the contest.

You know, given that the winner of the London thing got bounced *for the exact same reason*, you'd think anyone interested in this drawing would have prepared.
Most people didn't know this was actually happening until they were notified, as far as I know.
In any case, if I were the OP, I'd just apply for a job at BioWare instead of hoping for a mere internship, especially since if I were the OP, I would have confidence in what I could do and was applying for.

Send in a job application =) I don't think that whoever reads this is going to be in charge of hiring. Maybe they'll forward it on, but wouldn't it be better to just apply?

If you were actually considering applying for a job, then apply.

That kinda sucks. Especially as a passport is expensive and takes months to get.
Actually... you can get one in about a week or so if you are willing to pay for super-expedited processing.
I know because I did it when I got mine. I had to fly almost overnight to a consulting gig in Sydney. It happens. You pay out the nose but you can do it.

It required a full passport and not an expedited "passport lite" ID card? Huh. I miss the days when the border was no big deal, before security theatre made visiting our neighbors to the north and south even more of a headache.
In my experience, visiting Mexico and Canada isnt that difficult, its getting back thats the hard part. But since this was a legit planned visit, I'm not surprised they didnt let him go without a passport...Why don;t you have a passport dude? Haha.

Why yes, yes they do.
Can you get one? Well, that depends on how utterly awesome you are at what you do
