This is incorrect and unconstructive.

Only if you see the term as dismissive.

Who cares? If Bioware is trying to appeal to a larger audience then bravo. Dragon Age 2 looks good enough to the point that I'm not concerned about any of this.

Having played the single player campaigns in most of the CoD series, I have to say that they're decent to good but certainly not awe inspiring. However, the storyline is practically irrelevent as what really attracts gamers to the CoD franchise is the multiplayer based competition.

So unless Bioware wants to adopt a similar multiplayer system for their games that relies heavily on skill and competitive gaming, then they should abandon their dreams of attracting the CoD audience.

Instead, they should continue to work on implementing more action oriented material in their games so as to broaden their appeal; whilst sacrificing none of the RPG qualities that made them the successful developer that they are.

It's quite possible to do this. It doesn't have to be a one way street you know.. One can have one's cake and eat it too..

Mass Effect 2 and the Witcher are two great examples of games that have a near perfect blend of action and role playing..

I could read the rest of the thread on the assumption that people will discuss the matter in a mature and even-handed manner, or I could take a crowbar to my kneecap and in the assumption that I'm like Bruce Willis from Unbreakable. They're just as likely to be true.

Wow. Its crazy in here!

I dont limit myself to one type of gameplay genre. I have favorites sure, RPGS being on of them, but there are a lot of great games out there. Some require quick thinking, some logic, some reflexes and some require you to want to have fun.

Saying that a certain gameplay type is not for you, is understandable and fine even saying you don't like it, but saying its wrong or stupid? Is kinda stupid honestly.

I like RPGS and I like FPS and I like TBS and RTS, those tend to be my top favorites, all for different reasons. I've battled to Godhood in Baldur's gate and my mind was blwon when I first played Ultima. I've shoot entirely too many ****'s in Call od Duty then later shot terrorist as the game focus shifted later in the series.

I'm not sure why we need labels other than maybe to help people know what type of game they are going to play. They shouldn't be used to address the quality of games or the people that play them.

When you come in here and start spouting opinions in absolutes, you are only doing yourself a disservice and showing one of the worse sides of human opinion.

In my opinion. :D

'We wanted a powerful story, and we didn't want to be afraid of it being too deep for mass market, we just wanted to make it good.'

Thank you Chris Avellone, for Planescape: Torment and Fallout and everything else you gave us over the years. You enriched my life.

Also interesting that a company named Bioware created the Infinity Engine for the former.

But yeah, let's make it appeal to the CoD players...

No, it is just incorrect and unconstructive.  RPGs aren't for anyone just like no type of person is for a certain genre.  It's a hasty generalization, a logical fallacy which I cannot stand for.

I love RPGs and I am a gigantic nerd. Nerds are awesome. I don't think any of this matters anyway.

BioWare wants CoD players.

Kotick wants to make CoD subscription based (as in, paying monthly to use multiplayer).

Therefore, BioWare should make their games subscription based.

If Bioware were smart, which i believe they are, they wouldnt try to make it a competitor. MMOs that have tried have typically failed. Just make it a fun game in its own right.

I'd be surprised if SWTOR turns out profitable within the first year, maybe not even first 2 years. Not to mention actually get 10 mio. subs. They may aim for that but it just seems very optimistic.

Well, Call of Duty's audience is pretty large, I think any game developer would like to have it.

Well, keep in mind, this is the same company that seems to expect each of their games to sell, what, ten million copies?

Don't let marketing and BS fool you--most MMO's can pay for themselves plus all the 'maintenance' they'll ever need with box sales alone.

EA has out and out said that they'll turn a profit with 'only' 500k subscribers, which they'll easily make on the Star Wars name alone.

^This.

Also, I don't understand the notion that enjoying a shooter precludes someone from enjoying and RPG, let alone the notion that fans of shooters are somehow intellectually disadvantaged. Is it more intellecually demanding to decide to cast a cold spell on a fire breathing dragon, than it is to locate the position of a sniper?

And keep in mind, there's no pausing the combat in a multiplayer FPS. You make your decisions on the fly and consecutively and the first wrong decision you make or the first technique you exucute badly, gets you dead.

Playing a shooter forces you to think on your feet, while thinking strategically.

This. I don't think anyone really plays COD for the single player. They play it for the multiplayer. (I know that's what I play them for) Sure, the online MP has had a RPG like level-up system the past few CODs, but that's a long ways away from getting the average COD player to jump ship from leveling up while shooting their friends online to leveling up while playing through a campaign all by themselves.

I don't believe anyone truly believes that if you like FPS or Action games, you can't properly appreciate or enjoy cRPGs.  What many of us object to is the intrusion of FPS or Action-like elements into a series that was supposed to be designed to fulfill the needs of those seeking a traditional cRPG.  The potential dilution of the traditional cRPG experience in order to satisfy a corporate mandate for "broader appeal" to grab the interest of "casual gamers" or people who typically don't purchase traditional cRPGs is something we find objectionable.

In short, we're repulsed by the Dragon Effect concept being foisted upon us from the boardroom to ensure 2,500,000+ in sales.
