Easy: Anders got transferred to the command of a different Grey Warden than The Warden. Problem of character continuity solved.

Also what is the consensus of the thread on Anders eating people?

Nothin' wrong with a little cannibalism between abominations friends.

ETA: More seriously, leggywillow's post below pretty much sums up my feelings on it too.

Eating people is eww. Unless Justice finally gave him that fire spell he kept waving around but never actually had.

Raw meat is no good.

Anders's fire spell is plot-fu, and hey he did set the tent on fire.

My Wardens retired.

I'm assuming mine is too, as she ran off to Maker-knows-where with Alistair. Maybe we became hermits like the PC and a romanced Sky did in Jade Empire!

Probably the same way Anders feels about it:  Horrified and disgusted, and I'm not going to pretend that it's okay or that it didn't happen.

But I also think it will only add to the depth of his story.  I think that the short story we read will be his constant motivation and reminder to maintain control.  I think it will be why we see him helping the poor and sick at the neglect of himself: He feels guilty and he wants to atone.  He knows just how low he can go and will fight to keep it from ever happening again.  I think with Hawke's influence (completing his personal quest, for example), he can ensure it never happens again.

I'm certainly not going to write Anders off as a sociopath just because of it.  The situation is far more complex than that, and it annoys me when I see people going "BUT ANDERS BE TEH CANNIBAL NOW".

Yeah I know, it's just like it sucks that the Chantry gets to wiggle their evil little fingers of "self-righteousness" within the Grey Wardens, but I guess we'll have to leave it up to Hawke to figure out what to do with that whole issue.

@Upsettingshorts
As for the "eating people" Anders. I'm not romancing Lady Hawke with him until I figure out how I can get Vengeance out of him, if I have the choice. I don't want him going "nom nom" on Hawke while she's sleeping. I don't trust Justice!

Yeah, not so much worried by the eating thing, so long as he doesn't expect me to kiss him directly after.

Why has no one on this thread spoke about the fact bioware has made a cannon choice for anders?

Biowares cannon choice: anders joined the wardens and justice merged with him in the aftermath.

Awakenings choices with anders: He dies, You hand him over to the templers, You save him from the templers and dont recruit him so he leaves.

All those choices are now ignored and bioware has made a cannon choice that he is alive and has merged with justice reguardless of awakening's choices.

Bioware always said they would never make a cannon choice for dragon age.

Maybe, MAYBE, somehow removing Justice will remove the taint from Anders...hmmm. Maybe you get to choose if Anders and Justice still lives, but Justice will still be evil if Anders survives, but if Anders survives, Justice would die and the Warden taint might be removed from Anders...It's a thought

First off, it's canon not cannon. Also every single one of these instances can be accounted for. We'll have to wait and see exactly what Anders has to say in DA2, though, to know for sure.

We have spoken about it, at some length. First of all, the epilogue slides are unreliable. What your Warden believes happens is not necessarily what actually happens. Secondly, once the Templars take him away, we have no idea what happens. He may have escaped again and been recruited by another Warden.  If he dies, perhaps Justice possesses him at the moment. Yes, that conflicts with that short story, but it's not guaranteed that Hepler's story is absolute canon.

In short:

:?

Deal with it.

If anders escaped the templers again, What if vigil's keep fell? and your character was the only grey warden left alive (thats a possible outcome) There would of been no one to of made anders a grey warden.

@Aldaris951 I'm not gonna have a problem if Bioware brings back a character that had much more potential in Awakenings and wasn't exploited. Now he's back in DA2 and I believe for a reason.

I share this theory with someone who posted about it before that Anders will have a bigger role in the war coming up and the Mages vs Templars conflict. Given those reason and the fact he can be love interest, we can probably learn a bit more about spirits and demons.

So I don't see a problem with that and it's also like people pointed out on the last page. If my Warden left, although I'm sad the Chantry is doing dirty business with the Order, I have no control with what they did to Anders, so those choices were not left to the player but are part of the bigger events to come.

This.

But has anyone else considered that the 'eaten flesh' description might not be literal? I mentioned this in the romance thread. Basically the first time I read the story I didn't even really notice the eaten line - I instantly thought it was just a creative way to describe how mangled the bodies were - they were so messed up it was like someone had made a meal out of them. I was actually puzzled afterwards why everyone was saying 'cannibal', so I went back and re-read it and was all, "...Oh."
I mean, going by Occam's Razor he probably did kind of eat them (maybe just a few bites cuz he was ripping them apart with his teeth or something), but you never know...
I wish a dev would pop in to clarify this. ^_^

We can What If until the cows comes home, but it doesn't matter. You can come up with any scenario you like, including all of Ferelden wiped out by the plague moments after the Mother was killed, but it still doesn't matter. He's there, in Kirkwall, and they're not changing it.

You know, bugger it. You've got Gaider talking to you in your thread on the first page. Why are you bringing it up with us?

@Minxie I thought the same thing. But considering Anders doesn't remember doing it - perhaps it's MEANT to be ambiguous?

The lovely Lady Hepler would know - considering she wrote it. I don't know if she's reading this thread however.

Word of God:

A game can support alternate versions. A short story cannot. If you never recruited Anders, he was never at Vigil's Keep. So it might have happened as the short story lays out, it might not.

He did become a Grey Warden, however, whether you recruited him or not, and he eventually met Justice in that case-- whether Justice was in Kristoff's body or not.

Did we hand-wave your choice to not recruit Anders? Sure did. But that doesn't mean we contradict it, despite your assumptions.

I suppose it's beyond hope that this means people will stop bringing it up every dozen pages?

I mentioned this too. It could be literal but it could also as you say be descriptive. I, like you, had to go back and re-read it when I saw all the cannibal posts come up. I think it's prolly meant to be ambiguous.
