I'm actually curious what Anders's plan is, or if he has any at all.The Templars and Chantry seem to be the strongest force in Kirkwall, as they apparently outnumber the city guard and have a lot of influence on the political goings-on between the city states.

That said, why would Anders head there? It looks like a place where it would be difficult to amass a revolution (which is what he wants, right?) without drawing attention.

In Vengeance's defense, many of those Chantries were made of wood.

Maybe he's hoping the extreme attitude towards mages there will drive more of them to seek freedom?
Otherwise, I wonder if he was thinking it through at all. He might have just panicked and fled after Vengeance took over and slaughtered all those Grey Wardens, and the nearest place to run was the Free Marches (though why Kirkwall, I don't know). And then maybe he wanted to atone for it by setting up his little sanctuary of healing.

Oh I do too, the problem will be figuring out the exact point where I went wrong. :P I hope it's not like the hardening Alistair bit, since I doubt I'll be able to find the answer on the wiki during my first play of DA2.

Oh you're right we couldn't have known right away! Yeah that could be a problem.

Yeah, it might just have been coincidence that he went towards Kirkwall; he seemed pretty rattled after his little. . .episode.
It might also be that he wanted an army of templars handy in case he woke up one day to find Vengeance indiscriminately slaughtering the populace and not being able to do a thing about it. But that would kinda debase his whole theory on the mages being able to control themselves without the Chantry.

Gah, I really want to poke his head about this stuff! Hopefully we'll get a chance to in the demo, but I dunno. Seems like the sorta thing the writers would want to keep under wraps. Can't say I blame them, but. . .Anders(/Justice)!

I assume he went to Kirkwall to hide. I imagine that being a mage and semi-abomination, along with what happened in the short story probably gives him enough reasons to get the heck out of Ferelden. Maybe he's trying to do some good atm (the healing clinic). He might not be planning a full-on rebellion quite yet, especially since he's dealing with his personality disorder, heh. Then again, Vengeance could be pushing him to do something.

Well as long as Anders doesn't ask me to lie down on his dining table, I think I can handle the rest.

What if he asks for non-eating purposes?  :innocent:  Bow chicka wow wow...

The map is what's brought him to Kirkwall - that's my bet. Rampant speculation, but I think it's something to do with mages and the original tainting of the black city. He may be trying to prove somehow that it wasn't the mages fault - as a lot of the Chantry hatred against mages stems from the fact that they were allegedly the ones behind the whole Black City deal and the birth of the darkspawn.

Kirkwall seems to be the closest place to hide out of Ferelden. Though yeah, I have to wonder why the heck he decided to hide out in the biggest Templar HQ in Thedas. Maybe he thought with all the Templars, the Grey Wardens would have more trouble finding him?

If the Templars catch him, he's just an apostate. They'd probably send him to the Circle, which is nothing new. Well.. they would if they don't notice he's an abomination. I'm not sure how hard it is for them to tell. If Vengeance goes "Ooo, Templars! Must smash!" then he's in a bit more of a pickle.

It could be that he's trying to hide under their noses. Or he could be planning to take out Meredith, or something like that.

We need answers! :crying: Anders has become so unpredictable.

I very much doubt he would have stuck around in Kirkwall unless he has some purpose there. Or maybe he can't get out? The first quest you go on could have something to do with why he's there as well.

Just to add on to the discussion a page or two back, They have mentioned that friendship and rivalry will increase mostly depending on the actions you take, over the tone you choose when talking to them. So you could choose conciliatory speech options, but refuse, when it comes right down to it, to kill the next passing templar. If you've promised to kill it you might ****** him off a bit more than usual, but it's what you do that matters more than what you say. Less useful if you're roleplaying and would like to stay honest to your word, but helpful for those who don't mind manipulating a LI into bed.

I agree with Miri, I think the map is the reason he came to Kirkwall. Why steal it and head to the place where it's most useful and Anders is in the most danger, if it had nothing to do with that decision? Since Varric knows that Anders has the map before he introduces Hawke to the mage, it sounds to me like Anders has known about this planned expedition and has been waiting for someone to come along that will go with him into the Deep Roads.
To what purpose? Well, we'll find out on the 8th.

Maybe he's there because of all the refugees? He can offer them help and blend in with the crowd. I expect the map has alot to do with it as people have said. (What Threeparts said Posted Image)

@Threeparts Oh, THAT's a relief. I was worried it was conversation options that made the difference a la Origins. WOW. This is going to be fantastic. I can't wait.

Three useful threads on Rivalry and Friendship. Just for reference for people who haven't been obsessively following every word the writers type.

ETA: I assume there's a few different ways our F/R could go with Anders.

1.
Friendship: You're right! Every Templar and priest needs to burn.
Rivalry: You're right! But there's got to be a better way than just killing them all.

2.
Friendship: I agree that the Chantry needs to change, and we should take these well-considered actions against them.
Rivalry: What, are you crazy? The Circles need the Chantry, or the whole thing falls apart!

3.
Friendship: You're right! Every Templar and priest needs to burn.
Rivalry: What, are you crazy? The Circles need the Chantry, or the whole thing falls apart!

4.
Friendship: I like you just the way you are!
Rivalry: You're... an abomination? That's kind of gross, dude.

5.
Friendship: Oh Maker, I used to have a ginger tabby just like that! We used to call him Pumpkin!
Rivalry: Actually, I'm more of a dog person.

Oh yikes, I'm afraid of this too.

Anders: Well, I gotta go.  I must give in to my demonic urges and leave you forever so I can hone my templar-eating skills
Hawke: WHAT?!
Anders: It's all your fault, I'm afraid.
Hawke: :o
Anders:  Remember our third conversation ever?  About 30 hours ago?  When you picked Option B instead of Option C?  Yeah, that sealed our fate, babe.
Hawke: :crying:

I'm scared, but I'm also eager. I can't deny that the way the writers reach into our chests and rip out our still-beating hearts is part of the attraction. If the romance can provoke an emotional response from us (except, I assume, the one where you throw the controller across the room and swear for fifteen straight minutes before vowing never to play one of their games again), then they've succeeded, whether the response is omgyey  or what what WHAT  :crying:. I'm hoping for the former, but I'll take the latter as a consolation. Stir something in our cold, jaded gamer souls, Ms Hepler!

What I immediately thought when I heard talk of Canibal!Anders:

Hawke: So Anders, why work in a clinic?

Anders: It feels good to help people for once, and it keeps a roof over my head. Although it isn't as glamourous as the positionI held before.

Hawke: Why? What did you do before you started the clinic?

Anders: I ran a pie shop.

Hawke: A pie shop? All of these refugees have the city running a meat ration, how did you stay in business?

Anders: I...I bought supplies from alternate sources.

Hawke: What alternate sources?

Anders: (nervous) Oh would you look at that, it's gotten late I should run home and feed Ser Pounce-a-Lot. Night, Hawke. (Anders runs out the door)

@Threeparts I really want to be able to take the "You're right, but burninating the whole darn lot of them doesn't really appeal, honey," route. I have a feeling that might be friendship rather than rivalry though. What I really REALLY don't want is for there to be a crappy ending based on whether you choose friendship or rivalry. EG: Going down the friendship route means Vengeance stays Vengeance and going down the rivalry route is the only way you can make Vengeance back into Justice.
