I, uh, hope you don't mind that I went utterly insane and wrote you a minific. Hope you like it.

When she opens the door, the first thing out of Hawke’s mouth is: “Well, this is a surprise.”

And while a part of Hawke revels in the way Anders flinches at her dry tone, the other part of her knows it’s a lie. For weeks, every time someone knocked on her door she’d been expecting it to be him, holding yet another cat in his arms. “Would you really turn away Lady Mittens?” he would ask, and Hawke would grumble and scowl, but crumple under his hopeful eyes.

Maker, Hawke thinks, she’d missed him.

Anders says nothing, dropping his gaze to the cobblestones at his feet. “I have nowhere else to go.”

Should’ve thought of that before, Hawke wants to spit at him. Instead, she steps aside and holds the door open wider for him. “Try not to drip all over,” she drawls. “The cats hate getting their feet wet.”

“You,” Anders stutters, eyes darting up to Hawke’s face, “you kept them?”

Hawke closes her eyes, gritting her teeth against the fresh pain that shoots like lightning up her spine. “I,” she starts, hating how raspy her voice is,” I wouldn’t abandon them.”

“No,” Anders says, and Hawke feels him step into her house. “No, you wouldn’t.”

Hawke keeps her eyes away from him as she closes the door, and exhales against the wood before turning around to face him.

And promptly gasps all the air back in.

Out from the rainy night and into Hawke’s candlelit kitchen, Hawke can see a trail of red smears leading to the middle of the floor. Blood rolls down his left hand, and his green sleeve is stained brown up to his elbow. “Maker’s mercy,” Hawke hisses, and rushes forward. “What happened to you?”

Anders smirks, but it’s full of dark humor. He holds the arm closer to his side, as if protecting it from her touch. “Ran into a few Templars on the way ho… here.”

Hawke ignores the hope that flares at his flip of tongue, and stares hard at him. “What did you do?”

Anders blinks. “Nothing!” he says quickly. Hawke narrows her eyes at him, and Anders swallows, looking down at his arm. “I didn’t kill them. Just… just did what I could to get away.”

“What about him?” Hawke asks before she can stop herself. Anders’ eyes snap up to hers again. “Did he kill them?”

Anders merely shakes his head. “He… wanted to,” he says, softly, like he could hide it from the monster lurking behind his eyes. “But I fought him, kept him down.” He stares at his hands, still dripping watery blood onto the wooden floors. “I forgot where my thoughts ended and where his began.”

Hawke knows he isn’t talking about his recent brush with death. She thinks back to how he’d left her, months ago, screaming how she’d betrayed him, never trusted him, never believed in him. How he’d…

“You said you didn’t love me,” she whispers, clenching her fists at her sides.

Anders’ arms engulf her, and Hawke stiffens in shock. “I’m sorry,” he mumbles into her shoulder. “I’m so sorry. I do. I did. I never…” He shudders. “I missed you. So much.”

Hawke pulls him closer, wrapping her fists in the back of his robes. “Don’t leave ever again,” she growls into his ear. Then she laughs softly, feeling jittery with joy. “Who else is going to feed the cats scraps?”

He huffs out an amused noise. “My poor kitties,” he says. “How they must have suffered without me.”

Hawke’s lips quirk. She rests her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes as she inhales Anders’ familiar scent. “Like you wouldn’t believe.”

Phate Phoenix, that was beautiful, seriously. I especially love that he kept bringing her strays. Forcing her to forgive him by hiding behind fluffy, adorable creatures, oh you sneaky mage.

I want this to be in-game, seriously. With only one slight add-on at the end:

Hawke: Now, let's get you out of those wet clothes.

You're lucky- I don't have a fic I can flow into the DA2 timeline easily.  Well, maybe Stone and Sky, but it's far too soon for that.
And Apostates of Amaranthine is already past the ending of DA2, since it's like twelve or thirteen years after the blight began.  (plus, it wouldn't fit at all with the post-Awakenings story I wrote for Anders and Maggie.  Like, in the least.)  My Anders/Hawke fic will have to be totally new.  Which can be fun, but... it's nice working in an established framework, too.

As tempting as it may be, I just don't see how to write fic for a game I haven't actually played yet, though.  Even with the sheer volume of Anders fic I've written... I just don't know how he will behave in DA2, or what changes we'll see in his speech patterns, mannerisms, cadence, etc... basically everything that makes him, well, him.  Shoot, we don't even know more than vague hints of the game's plot.

So, yeah... ending my current Anders epic with plans to write a new one.  But I won't be doing that until I've got at least one playthrough completed.  With plenty of saves I can reference for major scenes.

If that scenario were in game, it should feature the morning after, too. One of the other companions (hopefully Carver or Bethany for bonus awkward points) comes to visit Hawke, finds the door slightly ajar, opens it to see puddles of dried blood on the floor leading to Hawke's bedroom, rushes inside in a concerned panic and gets an eyeful of makeup sex.

@Aristorum: Wow, I'm not usually into slash but that is hot. You draw a seriously foxy Anders (and MHawke). And Justice's spirit form is killing me with the lulz. Excellent work. <3

Fenris seems like an arse.
He will not be my Bromance. Anders being straight means the world to me. Even though i plan to eventually kill him with my Radical Anti mage beliefs (he won't like the whole sterilization idea)

You can't have a bro who is bi? Just shut down the romance option as early as possible and he'll stay just friends. :: I did it with Leliana and had no problems.
