NP, I always liked Anders, and some of my charactres would have gone much better with him than Alistair.  My first run, I plan to do a Hawk version of my mage that I always wanted to romance him with.  But no one will ever replace my Alibear for me.

Now. Maybe this was discussed earlier on here, but I haven't been around, so I don't know. But, the DAge wiki I consult lists a new voice for Anders. On his Facebook page, Greg Ellis said, more or less, "Yes, I'm back" when a fan asked. So WHAT IS GOING ON!? Who is Anders going to sound like?!?!

@rak72 I still have a massive soft spot for Alistair, I'll admit. It's very VERY hard to do the Zev romance with a girl for me. I always tend to pair him with my m!wardens because Alistair makes those puppy dog eyes at the fem ones and I'm lost...

That said, however, on my first import to Awakenings my Queen Cousland was regretting her marriage vows. QUITE a bit

@Tatooine Yes, sadly, Greg isn't voicing Anders. David Gaider has suggested they may have done some recording with him but abandoned it later, which is why Greg isn't aware that he's not voicing Anders. There's also been suggestions that his VA was changed for plot spoilery reasons, which is another possibility for why Greg hasn't said anything more on his Facebook page regarding the change. So.

OH and if you want to hear what he sounds like: At about 3 minutes he plays Silas in Leliana's Song.

Also, regarding the VA switch, I had it in my head that there's a plot-awesome reason for it. My thought was that this new dude is the Anders/Justice hybrid, but if part of the romance involves freeing him somehow, THEN Anders' proper voice comes back. Just a thought, though likely an inaccurate one.

I'm a sucker for a good voice; what can I say? I mean, I ran aaaaall the way from Denerim to the Circle Tower (post-Broken Circle) and searched all throughout the tower just to find Cullen and hear him say one more line of dialogue. *siiiiiiigh*

Reminds me that I'm ever so pleased with M!Hawke's voice. Rawr.

I don't claim to know anything about Greg Ellis or voice acting, but I honestly suspect that he just didn't know what's going on when he confirmed his return as Anders.  He's indicated that he doesn't play the games, and I think VAs are generally just given their own lines to read, with maybe a lead-in line if needed.  If it's something he was just doing for a paycheck, then it's highly possible he got confused about exactly what lines he was reading and as which character.

There's a possibility he'll make an appearance as Cullen, so he could very well have gotten the 2 mixed up.  They're different characters, but both very connected to the mage/templar plot and possibly easy for a non-fan to mix up.  He very well could have thought "Oh, I read some lines about magic and stuff, I guess I'm that guy again."

There's also the theory that he did record lines for Anders but the devs decided it wasn't right and found someone different.  I personally think that's less likely, just because it'd be expensive to re-record an entire character's dialogue.

He sounded surprised that we liked it that much, asked what platforms it's on, and that was the last I heard. Someone I know personally even said "Pleeeeeease just play Awakening!" in about as many words but with fewer E's.

Oooh, I would forgive the devs immediately if Cullen gets a cameo. I really would. I never used to like him until I saw the most adorbz piece of fem!mage/Cullen art EVER. *squish* He's adorable. Do want.

I'm just thinking the reasons why Anders changed VO. Don't know if it was mentioned by someone else but in Awakening, it is our Warden's story and the Warden met Anders during the story. In DA2's case, Varric is the one relaying the information to Cassandra of his encounter with Anders and of the Champions. And from my impression of the demo, it seemed like Varric/Cassandra story of the Champion is told a few years later minimum (the building up of the legend and people not knowing what Hawke looks like). Although Varric had witnessed most of the events happened from the rise of the Champion there will always be missing information whenever telling recounts of someone's life, especially a few years or even a few months later (coming from a historian perspective).

So I think the Anders changing VO scenario was due to Varric's telling the story from his perspective distorted over time, rather than our Warden's perspective.

I'm interested to see what romancing Anders as a non-mage Hawke is going to be like. From what we see in Awakening Anders isn't really used to non-mages outside of the party treating him like a human being.

Meanwhile we have Hawke, who has been exposed to magic for her entire life and considers it a perfectly normal part of life instead of this dangerous, demonic power that the Chantry considers it to be.

I do hope that would change depending on your Warden's relationship with Anders in Awakening. I think if your non-mage Warden was in a friendship with Anders, I think Anders will loosen up slightly, but not much since he's now has to deal with the Spirit of Vengeance.

Hopefully he'll become a believer/fan!  It wouldn't surprise me if most actors didn't take video game roles very seriously or find them particularly interesting, since critically they aren't considered much of an "art form" (Poop on you, Roger Ebert.).  I don't think the public at large and mass media consider them strong vehicles for characterization and storytelling, so I can easily picture an actor taking on a VA role in a game without giving much thought to the character.

Me too!  I think my "canon" Hawke is going to be a non-mage, because I really like the idea of that relationship dynamic.  (Of course, I'll have a zillion Hawkes, so Anders will get to try every class! )

I hope it's not an excuse for making him sound tortured instead of cheerful.

I know he won't be as cheerful now, but still. Not too heavy on the angst.

Howden can do cheerful and snarky as well. There were a few links to other samples of his voice a while back. Silas was a very dark character, so the bits from Leliana's Song show his sombre voice rather than anything else.
