I wasn't really interested in Anders at all until I saw that clip for DA2. I think I just jumped into Team Fenris x Hawke x Anders...

It looks like Anders' specialization tree is probably called Vengeance. Who didn't see that coming?

Are we forgetting Team Harem? Anders, Fenris, Sebastian. Mage, Warrior, Rogue. Nice and balanced.

And I'm playing a Dual-Wielding Rogue, so all the better.

I would never forget that team! It's gonna be mine most of the game assuming I like the boys as much as I expect to, with Carver supporting me until I get Fenris. Man, I can't wait!

(And to continue the tradition of Anders horrifying Carver...)

Carver: What are you guys talking about?
Anders: Just chatting about how hot your mom is.
Carver: You wouldn't dare.
Anders: Hey, Mrs. Hawke, are you sure you're not a mage?  Because your body is... enchanting.
Carver: I am officially going to kill you.

*lmao* SO GOOD! I am fervently hoping that we get some tense banter between the boys before Hawke actually settles down with somebody, but if we don't, I could go for some good stern Carver comments like those. :D

I never play mages first, either... in the Elder Scrolls games I was always a fighter with destruction and restoration, in the BG games I was a thief, in DAO I was a rogue, and so on. But in this game I'm going as a mage first. I can't go without Carver, and with the whole mages vs. templars bit a mage has a personal stake in the story. Too tasty to pass up, and I loved the gameplay! The archer rogue was really, really fun as well, but this time, it's definitely mage for me. The temptation to be with someone who understands (Anders) and keep him centered vs. the temptation to teach a person naturally a bit hostile to mages that not all are as he assumes (Fenris) plus the fact that there's a Chantry priest around... well, it's just too delicious to pass up, in my book. :)

I had a really odd Dragon Age 2 dream last night.

Hawke was talking to Vengeance through Anders; V was talking about memories of being Justice. And then Varric burst into a swarm of butterflies and rainbows. Sinus medicine can do some weird things.

It's from the strategy guide preview the publisher put out. http://www.piggyback...php?id_guide=48

You can download the full PDF there, but it's got quite a few spoilers for the game. I wonder if it will be like DA:O with the blood mage thing, though, where no one cared if you were one (and you could make Wynne one and she wouldn't say anything, wtf). I hope not, to be honest.

In any case, Anders is still a basically good dude, so I can't see him consorting with demons or getting into the mind control aspects of blood magic; that makes sense. You might be able to convince him that you're not evil, though, if you are one.

Thank Yah!
Im with you on the "not caring if your a blood mage" thing. My dad downloads a whole bunch of mods (one where you can have a romance with several people and they all dont care) but back to the point, I thought it was just a mod when they didnt react when I was a blood mage, but I guess I was wrong....? hopefully they DO react in DA2 :D

Supposedly Wynne only reacts if you tell her during/after the whole Circle Tower business, and then there's a persuade check you do with Irving where if you pass, he's basically like "She's a Grey Warden, deal with it." I can't confirm that though. She certainly doesn't mind being taught the spec.

With Anders you do get that bit of throwaway dialogue in the "shoot lightning at fools conversation", but that's about it. Hopefully there is a bit more reaction in DA2, given how divisive an issue it is even for the mages.

Anyone else planning their character around their romance possibilities with Anders?

To a degree.  Planning out my Hawkes has helped me keep my sanity in the long wait to DA2.  I have 5 imports from Origins, so I've been trying to match them up with Hawkes and then pair up those Hawkes with the right LI.  Of course, it's all speculation at this point.

My first Hawke, though, is basically me trying to create Anders's perfect woman.  She's going to be a rogue version of him in Awakening: corny and snarky, good but with a big selfish streak.  I'm excited about her.

One thing that really impressed me in Origins was the way every other party member acknowledged your romance.  Wynne teasing Alistair was probably the highlight of the game for me, and it was really interesting to hear Leliana and Morrigan snip at each other in jealousy.  I desperately hope they kept that kind of banter in DA2.  If they do, there's no way the sibling won't have some funny dialogue with the LI.  I know Carver is the younger brother, but I REALLY want him to be protective of Hawke.

Fenris is definitely ending up with a mage now.  I like how Bioware confirmed that Fenris hates all mages, so everyone immediately plans to stick him with one.  :D

I personally really like the idea of Anders being with a non-mage.  He's going to be getting one of my mages, too, though.  Heck, who am I kidding?  He's going to get 90% of my Hawkes, I'm sure.

Having watched a video of that scene, the PC has to say their blood magic was really "special Grey Warden magic" or try to convince Wynne that she didn't really see what she thought she did.  If you admit that it was blood magic, it leads to a fight.

I haven't written fic in years and years, but this stupid bloody idea wasn't leaving me alone. I had to get it out and into words before I frigging stabbed myself in the brain.

                                                                                                           *****

It rains a lot in Kirkwall.
It's the first thing I noticed. I kept waiting for the weather to break, for the clouds to run dry and the sky to clear, but it never did. The sky hangs lower here, as if it wants to crush the city with the sheer weight of humidity and mildew and rot. On bad days the clouds touch the ground and you can walk through a world muffled and hidden in mist. It's almost pretty until you come home dripping with filthy water and stinking of smoke and hot iron from the foundries. I haven't seen a blue sky since we crossed the Waking Sea ten months ago.

It might sound stupid for a girl from Ferelden to complain about the weather, what with our mud and our marshes and our ever-present stink of wet dog, but at least the sky cleared when it wasn't bucketing down. It might ****** down for hours every day in summer, but the storms would break before the sun set and in the afternoons the world glowed.

And now we're here.
A shanty-town of sticks and cloth and leather, rotting in the mud and the rain, ignored by the city leaders and forgotten by the citizens. No one in there gives a damn about us unless we cause problems for them. Complaining gets you platitudes or a slap around the ear, depending on the guard and their mood. There's been a few riots; over food, mostly. That's when people get killed – trampled, kicked, hit in the face by a flying brick, or run through by a guard in self-defence. That's what they call it. You tell me how it's self-defence when a guard in his shiny bloody uniform with his great big shield puts a sword through the belly of a hot-headed teenager armed with his fists and protected by clothes that are rotting off his back in the humidity. You tell me how that's self defence. And if you can do that, you can talk my brother back from the flaming dead.
Belly wounds are hard to heal. They're messy and they stink and infection sets in right away. They won't always kill you outright. They'll swell and ooze and rot you from the inside out. My brother knew that and knew that, and instead of cutting his bloody throat right there like I should have, I picked him up and carried my stupid, bleeding, crying little brother to the only person in this Maker-blasted city that gives a damn about any of us.

I don't know when he arrived. A month or two after my family, I think. The first time I met him was when one of the women who worked with me in one of the makeshift mess halls went into labour. She was only six months along. I sent a kid running for help and I carried her into the back room, where I stayed with her and held her hands as she bled and cried, whispering empty assurances and wishing I were somewhere else.
I didn't notice that he'd knelt beside me until he spoke, asking for her name and what had happened. I told him and he nodded and spoke gently to her.
His hands were so clean. I remember that. She was in rags and her skirts were soaked in blood, but when he laid his hands on her belly they were so clean.

Later, when she was sleeping and the pathetic little bundle had been stowed out of sight, I asked him why the Circle had come to the refugee camp. They'd never cared before.
He paused and looked me with tired brown eyes. "I'm not part of the Circle."
There's a bounty on the head of apostates found in Kirkwall. Ten sovereigns. Enough to fulfil your wildest fantasies in a dump like the refugee camp. And he was alone and tired. And he'd just healed a woman who had nothing to offer him in return, a woman that would be able to go home when she awoke and hold the children she still had.
I said that I wouldn't tell, and he smiled wearily in return.

It was three weeks before I spoke to him again. I'd ask if anyone knew a healer, and I'd be directed to an alchemist or a midwife scratching out a living selling love charms and placebos. People didn't want to talk about the mage, even those who had been healed by him. Somebody was actually helping them, and they weren't going to betray him to a stranger that could call the templars down on their heads. I didn't blame them, for all my frustration.
It took a child being knocked down by a merchant's cart for me to find him. It was only by chance that I was passing by the small crowd as he made his apologies for arriving too late and left as the little body was carried away.
I followed him. He's tall and lanky, thinner than he ought to be, and he's easy to keep track of, even in a crowd. I don't know why I didn't speak to him there in the road, but I followed his brown coat through the camp to a ragged tent on the outskirts. Four people sat outside on a rough plank bench. I watched from a distance as he spoke to them, inviting one inside.

I came back the next day. It was early, but three people already lined the bench, heads bowed as a light rain began to soak through their clothes. Low voices came from inside – it was two hours past dawn and he was already at work. I spoke to those waiting, quietly asking why they were there. The first clutched a wrist she feared was broken, while the other two - an elderly couple - had horrible racking coughs and spat out black phlegm. The girl had been there before and, even as she bit back her pain, she reassured us that he could help us, no matter our problems. When she learned why I had come, she invited me with her when she went inside so that he could talk and work, and others wouldn't be left waiting longer than needed.

The tent was warmly lit by a couple of oil lanterns, and the small space was divided in two by a half-drawn curtain. On one side was a small cot, and a table with a washbasin and bandages. On the other side was the evidence that he'd given up what he had of a home to heal people. Much-mended clothes hung inside to dry, a well-thumbed book lay by a couple of folded blankets, and half a loaf of bread and a candle stub rested on a crate.

He greeted the injured woman by name, his voice warm. He frowned when he recognised me, but simply asked my name. I gave it to him as he examined her arm, and then I asked if he needed help.
He gave a dry laugh. "As much as anyone else here does," he replied, and asked how the woman from the mess hall was recovering.
I told him that she and her husband were grieving, but that she was healthy and sent her thanks to him. He looked pleased, and asked what kind of help I was offering.
An assistant, if he needed one. I told him that anyone could splint a broken arm, but he could be doing so much more.
"You want to come here and splint arms, wipe runny noses and clean up afterbirth? So I can, what, go out and perform miracles?" His tone was disbelieving.
I shrugged. If not miracles, I told him, at least it would mean that twice as many arms might be set so they didn't heal wrong. And he might have time to shave in the mornings.
He looked at me then, long and hard.
"I am an apostate. I'm sure you've realised that by now."
Yes, I had.
"I could be arrested if the Templars find out. I could be executed on the spot."
I knew that.
"And if you came here to work, you'd be in just as much trouble for harbouring and aiding an illegal mage."
I knew that, too.
"So why, for the love of little green apples, would you risk that? Serving soup to toothless grannies not exciting enough for you?"
Because you're an apostate, I said. Because you could have kept it to yourself. Because you could have stayed out here, safe and hidden, and you didn't. Because you saved a woman from bleeding to death even when the people in the room could have brought the Templars down on you afterwards. Because you give a damn, and there aren't enough people in this blighted world who do.
I handed him a clean bandage. Because, I said, you need the help as much as anyone else here does.
He was silent for a long moment, and then took the bandage out of my hand and gestured towards the basin. "Then wash your hands. Use the soap."
He reassured the girl that it was only a sprained wrist, and then watched as I bandaged it. With a nod of approval, he smiled. "All right. You can stay."

That was months ago, and I've worked for him every day since.
I show up at first light, and I don't leave until we're finished. I make sure he eats and gets enough sleep, I laugh at his terrible jokes, and sometimes I can buy him enough time in the mornings so that he can shave. He teaches me ways to heal that don't need magic, he makes fun of my taste in lovers, and he held me as I cried after my stupid little brother died on the cot in his tent.
He still doesn't talk much about where he came from, but I get the feeling that he's running from more than just Darkspawn raids. He's not fond of the Circles, and even less so of the Chantry, and I try not to mention them any more. A man came in a month or two back that had been badly beaten. The templars had been asking questions, and he'd refused to say anything, and had paid for that with a good amount of blood and a few teeth. I've never seen my friend so angry, and I've never seen anyone struggle so hard not to show it.

People in the camp are glad to have him near. He turns down money when it's offered, but people bring us parcels of food or old clothing, or herbs for ointments and elixirs. We use what we need, but most of it is passed to others that come through our doors who need it far worse than us. Maker, we even have doors now. After two years in the mud and the rain the tents and lean-tos are slowly turning into huts and shacks, and one of the first was offered to our little clinic, in thanks for healing the builder's daughter.

He doesn't tell people he's an apostate, and most wouldn't dream of asking. It's easier to be ignorant than to worry what the knowledge will cost. Rumours have reached the ears of the Templars twice already, and they've searched the camp and handed out warnings about the dangers of apostates and maleficarum.

We lie. We hide him. We try to keep him safe.
We know it won't last.

He never turns anyone away. And one day someone will be tempted by that reward. One day someone will be too frightened to lie. One day he'll be followed by someone worse than a refugee girl that just wants to help.

When they hang him, I know I'll be up there on the scaffold too, and I'll be holding my head high when they slip the noose around my neck. He's the only one that gives a damn about us, the people the rest of the world wants to forget, and he's the bravest man I've ever known.
Our hands are clean.

I can only imagine the conversation after that first "flirt" line.

Carver: Did you just say what I think you said?
Hawke: What?
Carver: Oh, you know. When you hit on the demon-possessed man who just had his friend made Tranquil. THAT.
Hawke: You make it sound so dirty. I was just trying to cheer him up...and he does have that sexy, tortured look, no?
Carver: Andraste give me strength...you can't think that actually worked?
(from behind)
Anders: So, you think she likes me?
Varric: ...How long has it been since you've had a woman, boy?
Anders: I hardly see how that's relevant. (pause) A while.
Varric: (claps Anders on back) Let me put it this way: it won't be long now.
Anders: Oh. (smiles) Huh.
Carver: Bloody mages. That's it. I'm joining the templars.

Oh that is gorgeous! Truly beautiful. It really expands on the attitude of the refugees when Hawke looks for our beloved apostate.

Makes me want to write something myself. Your talent is inspiring honey!

And after that little conversation snippet I... I really want to see some Varric and Anders bonding. Because he's so good with Dwarves.Posted Image

But Varric is definitely one of the most easygoing companions. I can see him watching the infighting and shaking his head, and teasing Hawke about his/her demon-y boyfriend
