Because it's called being politically/socially correct...
By your reckoning we should take all romances out, because if there are no homosexual relationships then it is only pleasing the straight persuasion.
Personally, I have no problem with any form of romance. If it disqusts you that much (<_<) then just don't partake in it, simple. <3

I disagree. I can see Anders very clearly as a Bisexual. In the circle, mages aren't permitted to have relationships with anyone. It is completely discouraged. There are no clear cut models for a healthy heterosexual or homosexual relationship. I imagine romantic friendships are frequent within the circle. Whether or not sex is actually acted upon (I highly doubt it, since the Mages are watched CONSTANTLY, even if Anders did make a joke about wearing robes... I doubt he was being honest), romance and love between two people who are deeply oppressed seems more likely despite Anders giggling and joking about his romantic excursions (which may or may not have actually existed. I always thought he made light of his situation, when it was actually quite dark and sad).
I can see Anders not caring about gender because of what the Circle puts mages through. When you are in love, you are in love. I've had many romantic friendships I was unable to act upon. They were dear.
Actually, you're quite correct, I remember reading a thread while back where one of the writers said that Circle mages felt they needn't be confined by cultural morals since they're raised outside of that society.
So a more pansexual, moment-of-comfort approach is probably the standard for Circle mages.
(Gonna go fish through the forums to find the thread I'm talking about)
Its one of the reasons I'm excited to romance Anders. Because in many ways, romances between mages are discouraged so much in the Circle, that I imagine if a Mage WERE to even form some romantic connection with another, it would have to be a deeply romantic situation considering what is at stake (The possibility of tranquility, separation, etc.)
I always think about the Mage origins story in DA:O. Cullen? No go, deeply frustrated feelings that really can't go ANYWHERE. Jowan? Well, look what happened to Jowan. Granted, he was a blood mage, but even then, it was very much implied that his romance was incredibly Taboo (more so since it was with a Chantry girl).
Its very heartbreaking.

I hope you realize that oppressing others is exactly where your freedom to act on your opinions ends.

Thanks for linking the post Kris. I makes it more probable that Anders would be a bisexual option, considering the magi view and upbringing on cultural limitations.
The whole thread is so full of juicy info on Circle and Chantry rules on romance that I think I'll have to bookmark it

Being open minded and tolerant would make a better world, and i wish people would leave the homophobic BS at the door. I have to see people like that all the time in my everyday like. I don't need it in my RPGs/Forums. :3c

I am going to have a nice, normal, hot, man-on-man errotic love affair with Anders. How does that make you feel?

On a different note, I'm pretty excited about what we've seen so far of Anders. He seems very different than he did in Awakening, but I think that just shows how much he was struggling to hide behind humor.
EDIT: Let's try to stop the bi vs. straight vs. whatever argument out of here; this thread doesn't need to get locked now!
I personally prefer to play straight characters, and I will never romance Anders with a man. That said, I'm fine with other people being able to do so in their games. It won't affect my game, after all.

Actually, it wasn't normal in the old days, sure; it seemed like it, but behind closed doors, that's when the party got started.
But since it's a new generation, it's more.. tolerated, which is better.
The old days suck anyway. ._.
