When you first meet him if you choose the dialogue "That's inhuman!" regarding the dead Templars and his flippant attitude towards them he gives quite a bitter reply. I can definitely believe that he's using humour to cover how much he hates them. It may just be how he is. Some people use humour as a way of dealing with negative events or emotions, as opposed to brooding or acting depressed. It's not a 'need' as such, just one way of coping.

The original lore had tranquils being branded on the forehead with lyrium. Makes me think the man standing behind him in the screenshot where his eyes are glowing is the friend.

@Moilami Not out of need. He doesn't exactly hide it. But he certainly doesn't want to go into details about it either. He says on several occasions "Never mind me, I'm just glad to be out" - especially if you press him "You really don't like the Chantry do you?" "Not too fond of them?" and all you get are vague answers, never specifics.
He does tell you he was in solitary for a year, but he doesn't tell you much else. His dialogues with Nate are COMPLETE shutdowns - Nate asks him how did the Templars find him and he deflects all the questions with humour.

I suspect this is the truth of it, and it makes me facepalm a bit. Because you know that if he's getting roughed up by a Templar after being caught that he couldn't help but be a bit mouthy, and would just get himself into worse trouble.

IMO it's more like they're the two friends who think they get along well and make the move to become roommates and then realize they hate each other, but they both signed a lease. Anders is a slob and Justice is the one leaving passive-aggressive notes on the fridge and being all OCD about how the dishes are supposed to be put up.

LOL, this is exactly what popped into my head as soon as I heard about the whole Justice-possessing-Anders thing. I know this is SERIOUS BUSINESS, but I have a complete inability to take anything seriously. Unfortunately this means that while everyone else is having deep conversations about the nature of this possession, I have the theme song from "The Odd Couple" playing in my head.

Soooo I noticed there are some dishes in the sink and I remember we had a discussion recently about trying to put them in the dishwasher from now on instead of leaving them there for weeks and weeks. I'm not trying to be rude or anything, just thought maybe you forgot.
So maybe you could put the dishes in the dishwasher next time. Just sayin'

Greeeeeeat, she wrote for most no-win area of the game (you either pick the murdering, disloyal dictator or the nice guy who does a terrible job), and the couple that ended in betrayal, despair and evil. I don't know a lot about the writers behind the games, please tell me Ms. Hepler has done something other than a downer ending.Batteries wrote...
And if my knowledge is correct, she also wrote Orzammar, Branka and Hespith, which in my opinion was definitely the most gritty/darker part of the game for me.
She also wrote Sebastian Vael, and her bio states, "I wrote 90% of the dwarves in Dragon Age.
