Mass Effect newb here. I'm trying to do the mission on Noveria and am stuck because I have too low an electronic skill level (soldier) to open a door that I need to go through. Needless to say, I'm stuck. Is there any other way to get doors open in this scenario? Maybe with the help of a companion?

You should be able to convert a bunch of crap gear into omnigel, and use that to open the doors.
Edit: or use a companion such as Kaiden, Tali or Garrus to do it.

Thank you.  How exactly do you "use" the companion. I tried accessing their talents but it's just things like shields and the like.

If not, the Omni Gel should work.

As long as the companion has their electronics skill high enough, you will use their skill to do the bypass. You as the player will still do the work, but you will be momentarily in control of your squadmate from a gameplay perspective. You wont see them walk up to it, nor will the interface change.

It just means your companion's electronics score is used to determine if you can hack the console.

Aren't you talking about the part with the Rachni in that decontamination chamber? (I've recently finished Noveria, and I don't recall any other part where I needed to use Electronics on a door.) If so, you just need to tell the VI to open the door, then kill the Rachni and proceed. Electronics is only needed to activate the security system that would kill them for you--makes things easier, but not necessary to continue the mission.
