I've seen some Cousland players who wish they could spare Howe because otherwise it feels hypocritical when they spare Loghain. (Alistair: You got *your* revenge but won't let me have mine?! It is SO OVER between us!)

I like having the decision making power, so would support having an option to spare him.

Actually now that I think about it:

Characters you have to kill include Howe, Jarvia and Uldred.

Characters you are given other options for include Branka, Kolgrim, the slave trader and Marjolaine.

Interesting...

Plot convenience.  Those who you can let go do not interrupt the story in any significant way.

As for arresting Howe and putting him on trial, you are aware medieval courts were a sham?  We celebrate the English system of Common Law because of the Magna Carta and what not, but it is telling England's High Court, the Star Chamber, was such a joke that rigged legal bodies are sometimes called "Star Chambers."  The only way to be sure Howe, as with the other degenerates you can let go like Marjolaine and Caldrius (the slave trader) get justice is to kill them.

The Landsmeet seemed like a trial to me. With the Lords each voting on the decision...plus you can tell Howe to take it to the Landsmeet where they still hang murderers.

This picture is so full of win.  The only redeaming quallity Randon has is that he's voiced by Tim Curry.

You know, as non-HN I could give a **** what Howe did to the Couslands. So yeah an option like the OP mentions would have been nice, perhaps turn him against Loghain?

I can think of a few other instances in the game where you're attacked and have no choice but to kill your attackers though it feels awful (the refuges in Lothering come to mind). There are a few instances where when you've beaten your attackers, they beg for their lives, but Howe attacked and didn't ask, at the end, to be allowed to live.

It would have been interesting if he had, seeing him grovel.

Ha. Howe's betrayal was the first surprise I had in game. It turned me against him so I wouldn't want to spare him ;-)

You were supposed to hate Howe as a Human Noble. I see no point in sparing him, unless you wanted to bring him into the Wardens (which, when bringing in Loghain, why not?) I would never wish to spare him, it's good enough to see Nathaniel in Awakening for me (which was a pleasant and interesting surprise for my Human Noble.) It also adds to Nathaniel's character, and helps to add for the charges against you in the Landsmeet, making it a little more interesting when Loghain asks for justice.

You are suppose to hate Loghain, too. Mary Kirby says that they expect most people to execute Loghain, and that his crimes are meant to be "unforgivable". And you are obviously suppose to hate Vaughan as a city elf, but you don't have to kill him either.

But Loghain doesn't hold the key to release his daughter, and Vaughan votes to let you go if you don't kill him.

Howe won't let Anora go, and he won't let you leave, so the only choice for him is to be killed. Anora's elf servant mentions that Howe is privy to all secrets and not so subtle.  This is one of those moments, where someone found out a secret, and he votes to kill them.  As shown by the HN beginning and with Zevran, Howe's basic instinct for every problem is to erase the problem permanently by killing.
