Possibly because we have an excellent reason to use this character? Something you may not even know about, yet? That and it's possible for a character to have changed while still being recognizeable as the person you knew? He's not there simply for fan service, after all.

It's not even about fan service. It's about continuity. I don't know about anyone else, but for me, a character's voice (especially in a video game where facial models and expressions tend to be limited) is a huge part of him or her. To rip that away and replace it with some random other guy might as well be changing the character altogether.

Normally I'm one of the people who advocates waiting and seeing, but in this case I think I'm just going to pretend this guy is Anders' long lost evil twin and that the real Anders is off doing his own thing. My brain will break less that way.

To me, it seems a pretty far cry to suggest that Anders is so different when you haven't seen him... or because his character progressed in a way that wasn't what you wanted. Or based on the assumption that a change in VA completely destroys that character, even though the writers felt the new VA retained the essence of the character we felt was necessary.

But knock yourself out, if that's what you prefer. Long lost evil twin it is.

See, it's not even as if we should be assuming that he was going to be the same character in the first place.  A new setting and new protagonist... I will look forward to getting to know this new Anders (especially since there seems to be a lot for us to find out about him now), and will enjoy the retained parts of his personality that much more when they do appear.  Ellis will be missed, but I want to give the new guy a chance.

At any rate -- now I'm conflicted because I am pondering the possibility of THREE mages in my party... so I might keep Merrill and hear her talk forever.

You're a writer. You of all people should realize that real characters remain unchanging throughout their tenure. Characters don't "progress." That's called jumping the shark. Yo.

Haha, I am not gonna lie, I am pretty diappointed that Ellis isn't reprising his role as Anders! However I have complete faith that Anders' new voice will be fantastic. I've always been super happy with the quality of voice acting in just about everything I've heard from Bioware, so I have no reason to doubt your judgement until I hear everything for myself. c:

While there are some points in her acting in Torchwood that I do not like, I ADORE her accent! Especially when she gets excited!

There's a difference between natural progression and a rewrite. Just sayin'.

Nobody ever said it should be all about fan service. But is any of it? If fans of a character don't see any part of him in the new version, who does that benefit? You only alienate the fans you had. I understand we haven't seen a lot about him yet, but what we have seen hasn't invited anything but doubt.

Yeah it definitely had it's problems. Wasn't all bad though, and Eve Myles performance was always one of the better parts of the show I thought.

This. Plus her voice is just, perfect. I can already see what David means when he says that he takes her in his party just for her dialogue sometimes - I'm thinking along the same lines myself! Although from initially refusing to believe Bioware would bring her back for DA2 I am slowly becoming a big fan of Merrill without even playing the game. Everything revealed about her so far (VA and short story in particular) have just really captured my attention.

Spoilt for choice with female characters in DA2 it looks like. Aveline, Merrill, Isabela, Cassandra, even Lady Hawke herself all look and sound great.

Augh, Raphael Sbarge. As much as I liked Carth, Sbarge's voice was just grating. It was even worse on Kaidan. Besides, I doubt he could do a convincing accent, so unless he's playing a dwarf he wouldn't really fit in DA.
