Following the thread of a similar name in the Bioware Store forum, I figured I'd start a thread for collectible lithographs that are to be found elsewhere for those compulsive acquirers of games tat amongst us!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks to stardazzled, NamiraWilhelm, DukeOfNukes, AlphaJarmel, crusadeonacid, BeanieBat and Galford24 for additional information and suggestions. If I've missed anyone, please harangue me until I add you!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Important Bits
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please note that not all lithographs are created equal! Since a precise definition has proven hard to pin down (though see below for information that others have kindly provided) I have had to rely on the seller's description; not all of the products are the same as what we have come to expect from the Bioware Store. In such cases I will make a note to that effect when I become aware of it.

In addition, although I have linked to sellers of said lithographs where known, please be aware that this does not constitute any sort of endorsement of the seller, either on my part or Bioware's: although I trust that nobody will experience any difficulties, caveat emptor.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In addition to actual lithographs, a number of other prints such as giclées and so forth are listed that are not lithographs in the true sense but have been included as they may also be of interest. Where known, these are marked in a reddish or an unpleasant green colour (see the key below). Hopefully there are no errors where something has been described as a lithograph, but the exact nature of the print cannot be guaranteed.

Regular size lithograph i.e. approx. 24×18" (60×45cm) and larger
Mini lithograph i.e. approx. 16×12" (40×30cm) and under
Poster or print i.e. probably not a lithograph (may need verifying)
Giclée: not a lithograph but an archival-quality inkjet print. See the Wikipedia entry for more information.

Masquerade Lithograph, 18×24" 'matte lithograph stock', unsigned & unnumbered
Steinman’s Cosmetic Enhancement, 18×24" 'matte lithograph stock', unsigned & unnumbered
Mr Bubbles by Penny Arcade, 11½×15¼" 100lb print, unsigned, 'limited'
The Sisters by Jhonen Vasquez, 14½×12" 100lb print, unsigned, 'limited'

Subject Delta by Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell, 15¼×11½" 100lb print, unsigned, 'limited'

Notes: it is unclear whether some of the Bioshock prints are lithographs or not. I have assumed that those marked "lithograph stock" are lithographs whereas those marked as prints or posters are standard prints regardless of the specified medium.

However, anyone considering buying the prints marked as lithographs should be aware that they are
not like the Bioware Store lithographs and other than being printed on thick paper, they differ in every way: the colours aren't layered, both the inks and paper are matt and there is no indication of a limited run. The resulting matt and desaturated appearance may or may not be for effect, but those interested in buying should be aware of what to expect.

So what exactly is a lithograph, anyway?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good question, and one for which there appears to be no straightforward answer here unfortunately. I've made the decision to use the seller's description (with caveats) as I mentioned, but a couple of forum members have made efforts to find out something more definite which I've repeated here.

From stardazzled, a reply from the Bioware Store in response to her question about the production process:

Thank you for making the purchase at the BioWare store. I'm not sure what you mean by photo-mechanical. I believe the paper is fed through a 6 roll press. As the paper passes through each plate, a new layer of ink is pressed on.

Hope that helps. Please feel free to email me again if other problems arise. Thanks.

From crusadeonacid:

I talked to my friend today and here's what she told me regarding "real" lithographs. Traditional ("real") lithographs are made by drawing the reverse image onto a stone or metal plate, coating said plate with a silicon-chemical mixture, washing the plate to restore the image, and then finally inking and printing the image.

The more popular and common lithographs we see are created digitally. I found the details of this process on wikipedia. This way, no matter how many copies are made, the image will remain unchanged (with the traditional plates, the image fades with use). So it seems that all of these modern lithographs, could be correctly labeled as lithographs. It all depends on how the intial artwork was created.

The article also states that most mass printed media (maps, books, posteers, packaging, ect.) is a form of lithography as well. That strikes me a very weird.

... and in summary:  — Vom

Basically, who the **** knows what is lithographic and not.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original post, for the record
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To get the ball rolling, a few that I've found so far are another facet of the Treehouse Store selling lithographs for Dante's Inferno and Dead Space 2.

And another Bio- that I initially confused with Bioware is Bioshock, which has a number of smaller, unsigned lithographs which are also rather nice. The Yahoo Take-2 Store is currently extremely slow, however, so I'll add a URL once I've had a chance to verify it.

Unsurprisingly, the limited edition lithographs tend to be a fairly scarce commodity, with Valve's Half Life 2 lithos being long-since sold out ("long-since" as in years ago), and the one lithograph I managed to find for New Vegas seems to have been a convention-only special.

I'll soon collate a list of what I know about and whatever anybody else posts here, and will split it into those currently available and previous examples just for the sake of interest. Watch this space, unless you're not into collecting lithographs, in which case, don't. :P

Typically about 24x18" (60x45cm) though they can vary a lot in size, from the huge Kirkwall Gate at 39x22" to much more diminutive sizes such as the unsigned Bioware and Bioshock mini lithos which are typically 16x12" and the new "even more mini" ME2 character lithos which are 9x12".  I guess it would help if I also put the measurements on my list...

Great, first I have to start avoiding the Bioware online store forum so that I'm not reminded all the time of all the nice lithos out there that I cannot afford due to my current financial situation, and now I'm being haunted here as well. :(
Spleens will be stabbed for this!

At least the Bioshock ones are too small for me anyway. Anything less than 24x18 is no good!

More devs/publishers should get into the litho market though, as there definitely seems to be a decent enough market for it.

I can confirm at least that BioShock's 1959 print is on thick paper and has a very glossy touch. It's smaller than TH's lithos but was definitely worth it. - As a Civ 4 fan I still debating whether I should get that 100 USD litho or not - but probably yes since it's signed by Sid the God himself. (also on Take2's store)

DS2's Medical Deck and Titan Mines both are by Jens Holdener (has a few more DS2 images on his Blogspot, too).

edit: Unitologist Church is by Derek L. Brand (signature: D L Brand - Derek Brand in DS2's credits)

There also is a rather new 2-pack of large DS lithos up for pre-order (many thx to Beocat for pointing this out).

In addition: Valve had a gorgeous Team Fortress 2 litho. Unfortunately, I'm not into TF2 and some big gun something on my wall is a no-go.

Thanks for the information!  I'll update the OP when I feel my fingers aren't likely to add too many errors. :)

This might be a good place to ask what exactly is a Lithograph? I always thought it was some kind of hologram thing that moved when you changed angle. But it just looks like pictures to me. What am I missing?

Good question.  Technically, my understanding is that the printing material needs to be embedded into the substrate, be it paper, wood or metal, rather than simply printed on its surface; though I'm unsure if that's the case with the things we tend to actually see as lithographs here.

In practice, however they're made, they tend to be very high quality prints on very heavy paper: it's more like a sheet of card in terms of what it's like to handle.  They frame very nicely since it has almost no tendency to sag and wrinkle like posters.

I'm a big fan of them personally: they're not just a gimmick in terms of how they look, the details and colours really seem to stand out.

Since they're a premium quality print, they also tend to be released as signed limited editions, too, which is nice if you can grab one for a not ridiculous price.

Apologies if that sounds like a sales spiel, I'm very tired and my sense of sarcasm and general disrespect has deserted me.

Concerning the new DS2 litho 2-pack: does anyone know how many were up for sale? All 500, 400 or 250?

Thanks.

Yeah, I freely admit that I didn't know what they were either. I knew the term in the classical sense but I'm used to things like "prints," "scrolls," etc.

Been looking to find things to decorate my walls. These might just be the droids I'm looking for. Now I just need to find some I like...

Yeah, I've got all four of the smaller pictures and they certainly seem very much like lithographs.  I guess
at some point I'll have to ask Jedi or someone what actually
constitutes a lithograph since my answer to Druss99 about the same subject was a complete
guess...  In lieu of further information they certainly look like lithographs, though!

I've added the other odds & ends too, and hopefully haven't missed anything out.  Thanks for that! :)

A Lithograph has to do with the manner in which it's printed. Most of those shown in this thread are not lithographs...merely prints. A lithograph is made in a manner similar to Wood blocks...being that one colour is "painted" on before another begins. It creates a layered look, and results in each colour looking much more vibrant than simply mixing inks.

Again, most of these aren't Lithos, they're just prints.

Could you provide more information?  It'd be useful for me to know one way or the other since I'm trying to make a differentiation; if this is correct, it sounds like a lithograph is drifting towards a marketing term rather than a useful description.

It's similar to wood blocks. Basically, you have a series of plates, each with a different part of the image etched on to them. Each of these is then painted in a single colour and then pressed onto the page. When they are all done, you have a complete image. I'm over simplifying, but that's the basic process.

Modern days, the process is done digitally rather than actually etching out the seperate plates, but it's still done one layer of ink at a time. As I said, most of the images listed here are just posters printed on heavy paper.

Wouldn't it be false advertising to describe something as a lithograph when it's not, though? Unless that perhaps explains the apparently inconsistent descriptions of "lithograph" and "print" for very similar-looking things and is why I added a note about some of the Bioshock prints from the outset. I suppose I should get round to asking Jedi to get a definitive answer, at least for those sold by the Treehouse store.

Edit: unmangled sentence.

I am addicted to lithographs! I have never seen a thread so wonderful!

My collection is mostly band related, but I do have the Dr. Steinman litho and a Kirkwall one on the way. I don't think Steinman is signed, but I'll check on it later and let you know.

AngryGamer's Bioware lithograph thread is pretty wonderful, except when I read about the stuff I've missed.

If you could indeed confirm whether or not the Dr Steinman lithograph is signed that would be most appreciated. :)

Hey Dukes you seem to know a fair bit about lithos, how about you write a brief paragraph summing up what exactly one is, then we can pop it in the OP?? Could be useful Posted Image
